STACKER AND OS/2 WARP'S ARCHIVE FUNCTION
(Applies to Stacker for OS/2 & DOS ver 4)
      STAC FAX 64209 (01-24-1995)

      BACKGROUND

Each time you make a change to the boot files such as CONFIG.SYS,
Stackers SYNC2 must synchronize the changes between the
compressed and the uncompressed drives. You will see a message on
screen such as "Stacker has detected changes in the following
file(s):...". After the bootup files have been updated, you must
restart your system for the changes to take effect.

If you are running OS/2 Warp, you may activate a feature that
saves copies of the bootup files. This archive function is
discussed in detail in Chapter 15 of the OS/2 Warp User's Guide.
Note that this feature is different from the multiple
      configuration feature in Warp.

When the system is shutdown, bootup files are saved by the
archive function. If you have compressed your boot drive, OS/2
updates only the files on the compressed Stacker drive. SYNC2
must update the file(s) at the next system restart, so the
restart is usually interrupted by the SYNC2 process. Also, SYNC2
does not synchronize some of the files that OS/2 archives.

      SOLUTION

Because Stacker cannot keep the most recent version of the
archive files on the uncompressed drive, we recommend that you do
not archive your compressed OS/2 boot drive. If your OS/2 boot
drive is not compressed, you may use the archive feature, but do
not place the archive file on a Stacker drive.

If you decide to activate the archive function, and use it to
rebuild a damaged desktop, use the procedures in the OS/2 Warp
Users Guide or in StacFax 64011. However, we cannot predict the
results of using the Recovery Choices. At a minimum, the latest
changes to the desktop will probably not be reflected in the
      recovered version of the desktop.

To turn off the archive function
       1. Turn off the archive function in accordance with
instructions in the OS/2 Warp User's Guide.
       2. Open a DOS session. Change to the STACKER directory and type
           SWAPMAP <enter>.
       3. Locate the line that reports the OS/2 boot drive. It will
           look something like this:
           Drive C was drive D at boot time [ D:\STACVOL.DSK = 123.4MB
           (physical) ]
Note the drive letter in brackets, in this case drive D.
This is the uncompressed boot drive.
       4. Type:
           ATTRIB -R bdrive\OS2\BOOT\ARCHBASE.$$$
where bdrive: is the drive letter of the OS/2 boot drive.
           ATTRIB -R drive:\OS2\BOOT\ARCHBASE.$$$
where drive: is the drive letter of the uncompressed drive
           you noted above.
       5. Type:
           copy bdrv:\os2\boot\archbase.$$$ drv:\os2\boot\archbase.$$$
where bdrv: is the drive letter of the OS/2 boot drive, and
drv: is the drive letter of the uncompressed drive you noted
           above. Exit the DOS session.
