FILE ALLOCATION TABLE PROBLEM (CREATE ERROR 35)
(Applies to Stacker for OS/2 & DOS ver 4)

      BACKGROUND

When you receive a "Create Error 35," Stacker is letting you know
there is a problem with the file allocation table (FAT) of the
drive it is attempting to compress. Stacker will not compress
the drive until all FAT problems have been corrected.

      SOLUTION

First, run CHKDSK to diagnose the problem. To correct the
problem, use the /F parameter with CHKDSK.

If the drive is one that is accessed by OS/2, you will need to
run the OS/2 version of CHKDSK. To do that, start your computer
under OS/2 and then run CHKDSK on the problem drive. CHKDSK
will not let you use the F parameter to correct problems if the
drive is locked by the system. An OS/2 boot drive will always
be locked. If that is the case, you will have to start your
computer from floppy disks and then run CHKDSK /F.

For example, if drive D is your OS/2 boot drive and that is the
one where Stacker is reporting a "Create Error 35," then you will
      need to do the following:

       1. Start your system with the OS/2 Installation Diskette in
drive A. When prompted, insert the OS/2 Diskette 1 into
           drive A.
       2. When you get to the Welcome screen, press ESCAPE (or F3 if
you are running Warp) to get to an A prompt.
       3. Change to the drive and directory where CHKDSK is located.
With OS/2 2.1, CHKDSK is on OS/2 distribution Disk 2 (the
third disk in the package). If you installed OS/2 Warp from
Compact Disc, CHKDSK is on the CD in the \OS2IMAGE\DISK_2
directory. It may be in different locations depending on the
version of OS/2 you are using. Type:
           CHKDSK d: /F <Enter>
where d: is the drive on which Stacker reported the Error
           35.

If CHKDSK reports allocation errors, lost allocation units, or
extended attribute errors, it will be able to correct the problem
that prompted the Error 35 from Stacker. However, if CHKDSK
reports cross-linked files, it will not repair them. You will
have to manually correct the cross-linked files.

NOTE: At least one of the cross-linked files is probably invalid.

      To correct the cross-linked files:

       1. Copy those files listed by CHKDSK to a floppy disk or
           another hard disk.
       2. Delete the original files.
       3. Then run CHKDSK /F again as outlined above.

When CHKDSK is finished repairing the drive you can then
      successfully run Stacker's setup.
