      BACKGROUND

Sometimes you have to run CHKDSK to correct problems on an OS/2
boot disk. OS/2 does not let you run CHKDSK /F on the current
startup drive. OS/2 documentation recommends that you start the
system from the OS/2 Installation Disk/Disk 1 and then run CHKDSK
/F on the drive with problems. When Stacker is installed, you
have to start the system with your Stacker-aware boot disks, then
run CHKDSK on the compressed boot drive.

      SOLUTION

To run CHKDSK /F on the compressed boot drive, you need:

         - Stacker-aware boot disks.
         - A copy of the OS/2 file CHKDSK.COM. That file is on OS/2
distribution Disk 2 (the third disk in the package) if you
           have OS/2 2.1. If you installed OS/2 2.1 from a CD-ROM, then
CHKDSK is on the CD in directory \OS2SE\DISK_2. If you
installed OS/2 Warp from a CD-ROM, then CHKDSK is on the CD
in directory \OS2IMAGE\DISK_2. Other OS/2 versions or
configurations may have CHKDSK in other locations.

If you do not have a set of Stacker-aware boot disks, you can
      create them. You will need:

         - The first two disks of the OS/2 distribution set
           (Installation Disk and Disk 1)
         - The Stacker for OS/2 and DOS Disk 2
         - A blank reusable floppy disk of the same type as the OS/2
           distribution disks.

      To create Stacker-aware boot disks:

       1. Perform a Diskcopy of the OS/2 distribution disk that
contains the CONFIG.SYS file. That is usually the floppy
disk labeled "Disk 1". Then mark the copied disk "Stacker-
           aware Disk 1".
       2. Start your system under DOS. Use Stacker disk 1 to start if
you have no other way of booting to DOS.
       3. Insert the Stacker for OS/2 and DOS Disk 2 in drive A or B
           and switch to that drive.
       4. Type:
           STACBOOT <Enter>
       5. STACBOOT will prompt you to enter the names of the drives
that are compressed. For example, if you compressed C and D,
           you would type:
           C D <Enter>
       6. You will then be prompted to insert the OS/2 disk containing
CONFIG.SYS into drive A. Insert the disk you marked "Stacker-
aware Disk 1" into drive A and press ENTER. STACBOOT will
then advise you to remove the disk from drive A. You now
have a set of Stacker-aware boot disks.

To run CHKDSK on your OS/2 boot drive:

If you installed OS/2 from disks:

       1. Restart your system with the OS/2 Installation disk in drive
           A. When prompted for disk number 1 insert the disk you
           labeled "Stacker-aware Disk 1".
       2. When prompted to continue with the OS/2 installation press
ESCAPE to get to an A prompt.
       3. When you get to an A prompt, insert the OS/2 disk labeled
"Disk 2" into drive A and type:
           CHKDSK d: /F <Enter>
where d is the compressed drive you want to check.

If you installed OS/2 from CD-ROM:

       1. Restart your system with the OS/2 installation disk in drive
           A. When prompted for disk number 1 insert the disk you
           labeled "Stacker-aware Disk 1".
       2. When prompted, place the OS/2 CD-ROM in its drive.
       3. At the welcome screen press ESCAPE to exit to an OS/2
           command prompt.
       4. Change to the CD-ROM drive.
       5. If you have OS/2 Warp, change to the \OS2IMAGE\DISK_2
directory. If you have OS/2 2.1, change to the \OS2SE\DISK_2
           directory. Type:
           CHKDSK d: /F <Enter>
where d is the compressed drive you want to check.
