      BACKGROUND

If you are experiencing lost extended attributes on a Stacker
drive, you can try to recover them using the OS/2 CHKDSK utility.
OS/2 does not allow you to run CHKDSK /F on the current startup
drive. OS/2 documentation recommends that you start the system
from the OS/2 Installation Disk/Disk 1 and then run CHKDSK /F on
the drive with problems. When Stacker is installed, you need to
start the system with your Stacker-aware boot disks, then run
CHKDSK on the compressed boot drive.

      SOLUTION

To run CHKDSK /F on the compressed boot drive, you need:

         - Stacker-aware boot disks.
         - A copy of the OS/2 file CHKDSK.COM. With OS/2 2.1, CHKDSK is
on OS/2 distribution Disk 2 (the third disk in the package).
If you installed OS/2 Warp from Compact Disc, CHKDSK is on
the CD in the \OS2IMAGE\DISK_2 directory. It may be in
different locations depending on the version of OS/2 you are
           using.
If you do not have a set of Stacker-aware boot disks, you can
      create them. You will need:

         - The first two disks of the OS/2 distribution set
           (Installation Disk and Disk 1)
         - The Stacker for OS/2 and DOS Disk 1
         - A blank reusable floppy disk of the same type as the OS/2
           distribution disks.

      To create Stacker-aware boot disks:

       1. Perform a Diskcopy of the OS/2 distribution disk that
contains the CONFIG.SYS file. That is usually the floppy
disk labeled "Disk 1". Then mark the copied disk "Stacker-
           aware Disk 1".
       2. Start your system under DOS.
       3. Insert the Stacker for OS/2 and DOS Disk 1 in drive A or B
           and switch to that drive.
       4. Type:
           STACBOOT <Enter>
       5. STACBOOT will prompt you to enter the names of the drives
that are compressed. For example, if you compressed C and D,
           you would type:
           C D <Enter>
       6. When you are prompted to insert the OS/2 Disk containing
CONFIG.SYS into drive A, insert the disk you marked "Stacker-
aware Disk 1" and press ENTER. STACBOOT will then advise you
to remove the disk from drive A. You now have a set of
           Stacker-aware boot disks.

To run CHKDSK on your OS/2 boot drive:

       1. Restart your system using the Stacker-aware boot disks (the
Installation Disk. and Stacker-aware Disk 1.)
       2. When the A prompt appears, insert the OS/2 disk labeled
"Disk 2" into drive A (or disk appropriate to your version
           of OS/2.)
       3. Type:
           CHKDSK d: /F <Enter>
where d is the drive you want to check.
       4. It's usually a good idea to run CHKDSK on all drives,
compressed and uncompressed. There may be errors on more
than one drive, so correct them all in one session.
