      BACKGROUND

OS/2 uses a technique known as virtual memory to supplement the
amount of Random Access Memory (RAM) on a computer. When all the
physical RAM is filled up, OS/2 uses disk space to simulate RAM.
The file that is used as RAM on the hard drive is called
SWAPPER.DAT. SWAPPER.DAT dynamically grows and shrinks based on
      memory demands of the system.

When Setup creates a Stacker drive, it looks for SWAPPER.DAT and
keeps the file on the uncompressed drive. The Setup process also
adjusts the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file and changes the SWAPPATH entry
to tell OS/2 where it can find SWAPPER.DAT. By default, the
      SWAPPATH entry is:
              SWAPPATH=d:\OS2\SYSTEM
where d: is the drive letter of the OS/2 startup drive. The
Stacker synchronizer changes the drive letter to be that of the
uncompressed drive that corresponds with the compressed OS/2 startup
      drive.

If OS/2 can't accept the path specified for SWAPPATH during
startup, it displays an error message and puts SWAPPER.DAT on the
compressed C drive. The Stacker synchronizer, SYNC2.EXE,
moves the file and corrects your CONFIG.SYS file so OS/2 knows
where to find SWAPPER.DAT. Restart if asked.

      SOLUTION

If you receive a message from Stacker that there is not enough
uncompressed space for the SWAPPER.DAT file, notice the amount of
space it tells you should be made uncompressed. Then do the
      following:

       1. Restart your system and when in the Boot Manager menu choose
           to start DOS.
       2. When a DOS prompt appears, you are ready to make the
required amount of uncompressed space. Change to your
           STACKER directory and type:
           RESIZE d: <Enter>
where d: is the OS/2 boot drive.
       3. You will then be given the choice to "Increase Stacker drive
size" or "Make more uncompressed space." Choose to "Make
           more uncompressed space" available.
       4. RESIZE will ask you to enter an amount to make uncompressed.
It will also show a default amount to leave uncompressed.
Add the default amount shown to the amount Stacker told you
to make uncompressed when you started the system under OS/2.
Enter the result in the field provided.
       5. Tell RESIZE to perform the changes. When it has modified the
Stacker drive, press ENTER to restart the computer.
       6. When you return to a DOS prompt, start the system and at the
Boot Manager menu choose to start OS/2. You will then start
under OS/2 without any error messages.
