Features Overview
The Compaq Presario 500 Series of computers are All-in-One computers designed with an eye to the future, with enhanced multimedia support, ease-of-use interfaces, and expandability.  You can be productive immediately because your computer is preloaded with the latest MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, Compaq Utilities, and application software. Built-in, 14-inch High-Resolution, Color Monitor
There are three manual adjustments, located on the side of the monitor.  These adjustments control (1) contrast, (2) brightness, and (3) horizontal hold.  Locate these adjustment knobs and adjust them to see what effects they have on the monitor.  Your built-in monitor has Local Bus Video which speeds up the graphics three to five times faster than standard video boards. Microprocessor
The brain of any computer is its microprocessor.  Your computer comes standard with a 486 microprocessor to run all of today's most popular software programs, including programs written for Microsoft Windows.  Your processor is also upgradeable to even further increase your computing speed.  The printed Hardware Reference guide has more information on the processor and upgrade options. Multimedia System
Your computer has an internal dual-speed CD-ROM drive, two stereo speakers, microphone, and pre-installed software.  With this multimedia system, your computer becomes a motivating teacher with sound and animation, an entertainment center playing favorite CDs, and a realistic, action-packed game player. Sound System
There are buttons that let you adjust your sound system.  To hear sound, click on the speakers in this picture.  To adjust the sound volume, press on the volume buttons: (1) volume up, (2) volume down.  The mute button (3) turns off the speakers. CD-ROM Drive
Your computer came with a CD software collection.  The collection was automatically configured for you when you turned on your computer.  Your CD-ROM drive will also play an audio CD or Compact Disc.  To learn how to play your favorite CDs, refer to the Compaq Multimedia section of this tutorial. FAX/Modem
Some Compaq Presario 500 Series models have a data/fax modem installed.  Software comes preinstalled allowing you to immediately use these features with a single telephone line.  You can transfer a file across town, send/receive a fax, or have the computer answer the telephone and take messages.

Telephone Answering Machine
Some models have a complete telephone answering machine with multiple voice mailboxes and a hands-free speakerphone.  If you did not receive a modem with your computer, you can install an optional modem. Memory
Your computer comes standard with 4 megabytes of memory.  The system can support up to 64 megabytes of memory for future expansion.  Expansion capability allows you to keep pace with the growing sophistication of software.  The addition of memory allows you to run multiple programs under Microsoft Windows without compromising performance.  The picture above illustrates this performance/memory relationship. Storage Drives
Your computer comes with three storage drives: (1) 3.5-inch diskette drive, (this drive can read and write either 720-KB or 1.44-MB diskettes); (2) dual speed CD-ROM drive; and (3) 270 MB or 420 MB hard disk drive, depending on which model you purchased. ISA Expansion Slots
Your computer has two slots for installing Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) expansion boards.  Types of boards that you might want to add to these slots include: tape drive controller boards, video digitzer/scanner boards, or network interface boards. Interfaces
On the back of your computer there are interfaces to connect devices a like printer or joystick.  IMPORTANT NOTE: To be safe, always remember to exit Windows, then turn off your computer before connecting any external device, such as a printer, mouse, or joystick. Compaq Multimedia (MediaPilot)
Compaq has made it easy for you to use the multimedia and fax/modem/answering machine capabilities of your new computer. The MediaPilot is a set of software applications that allow you to easily control your CD Sound System and other multimedia devices.  Many of the applications look like the actual machines you may have seen.

CD Sound System
The CD Sound system looks like a typical music stereo system for home entertainment.  The CD Player (Top) can be used to play audio CDs, Photo CDs, and Information CDs (Programs).  The Mixer (Center) is used to adjust the volume.  The Control Panel (Bottom) turns components on and off.

Other Components
Other components that may be displayed are the WAV File Player and the MIDI Player.  Click on the "WAV" button on the Control Panel to bring up this component.  The WAV File player plays standard windows wave files on your hard drive or diskettes

Compaq Control Center
From the Compaq Control Center, you can perform a Checkup of the computer, check the computer Setup, and perform Security Management and Power Management functions.  Click on the button of the utility you would like to learn about.  You can return to this menu screen by clicking on the Control Center button that will be displayed. Computer Checkup
Computer Checkup is a software utility that permits you to run a series of diagnostics tests on your computer.  These tests determine if the computer options are recognized by the computer and are functioning properly.  Click on the Computer Checkup button above to see the screen that is displayed when you access Checkup.  This screen indicates the computer is rebooted and Checkup is accessed by pressing the F10 key.  Click on Cancel to return to the Compaq Control Center.  Click on the right arrow to continue.

Compaq Setup
Computer Setup displays a summary of the current computer configuration and allows you to modify the configuration.  To see these, click on the Computer Setup button above. Security Management
The Security Management utility allows you to set passwords and disable devices.  The password features are covered in the security section of the Hardware Reference guide.  To give you an idea of how they work, we will simulate setting the Power-On Password.  Click on the Security Management button to continue.

Setting Power-on Password 
Click on "Set" and type in the desired password (for this simulation use "Compaq"), then press Enter.  (Limit your password to seven characters-any word in excess of seven characters will be cut-off and the extra characters not recognized).

Re-type the same word "Compaq" to verify your new password, and press the Enter.
The screen above indicates that the new password was successfully set.  Remember, this was only an example.  You can use this example to set your own password later.

Using the Power-on Password
After the computer re-boots, the key symbol on screen will appear.  You must type in your Power-on Password to access the computer.  When you type the password, you will not see the letters or numbers of the keystrokes.  If the key symbol appears with a "X" on it, this means you need to carefully retype your password and press return.  Click on the right arrow to continue.

Changing/Deleting your Password
Change the password by entering a new password when you sign-on.  Shown above are combinations that can be used to change your password to "COMPUTER".  Notice that the current password is typed in and then the new password.  The new password must be separated by any one of the symbols (/, =, -, ) shown above. Symbol availability is determined by the keyboard you are using.  Delete is the same with no new password.  After entering a new password, it becomes effective during the next boot-up. Power Management
Energy Saver is a Windows application that allows you to enable and set Energy Saver Timeouts for the monitor and hard drive.  When Energy Saver is set, your computer uses less energy.  Access to the Energy Saving Feature is through the Compaq Control Center's Power Management button.  Click on the Power Management button to see this screen.

Setting Power Management
On this screen, you can set the timeout for the hard drive and monitor.  The Blink LED makes the hard drive light blink when Energy Saver is working.  Once these are set, you will receive a message stating you must restart your computer before these are active.
