WELCOME TO THE COMPAQ PRESARIO LEARNING ADVENTURE! To advance through the pages of this overview, click on the right arrow in the lower right corner of your screen. Click on the left arrow to back up. Clicking the Exit Overview button will exit the Overview and return you to the bookshelf.
Before you run the Adventure, you should be able to use a mouse. If you need help with this, or just some practice before you begin, go back to the Learning Center and select the Windows Tutorial. This will give you some practice with clicking, moving, and dragging skills.
The Compaq Presario Learning Adventure provides an easy and fun way to learn about your new Compaq computer. The Adventure is divided into four Guidebooks that teach procedures and principles and a Game book that tests what you have learned. Let's look at these components in more detail...
THE GUIDEBOOKS. The PC Basics Guidebook provides an overview of PC hardware, software, and basic problem solving techniques. The MS Windows Guidebook defines basic terms and teaches file management skills. The MS-DOS Guidebook is an introduction to MS-DOS terms and structure and common DOS commands. The Compaq Presario Guidebook is a guide to your new Compaq Presario system.
USING THE GUIDEBOOKS. Each Guidebook starts with a Table of Contents where you click on a topic to run. Within each guidebook the pages are numbered as in Page 4 of 20. This tells you the page you are on (4) and the total number of pages in the book (20). Read along in the book and follow the instructions written in the text box on the bottom of the screen. Later in this overview we will define the buttons used to move around in the Guidebooks.
THE GAME BOOK completes your learning experience with an Adventure that tests your knowledge of your new system. You search for clues to the secret hideaway of a band of pirates. Along the way you answer questions and perform tasks. Correct answers give you clues and score points. In the first level you work your way through the jungle and explore the island beaches. In the second level you continue your quest below the island surface in a series of caves and tunnels. You complete your adventure by locating the Pirate hideaway and learning your final score.
HOW SHOULD I BEGIN? If you are new to personal computers, you should start by working through the Guidebooks in this order; (1) PC Basics Guidebook , (2) Compaq Presario Guidebook, (3) MS-DOS Guidebook, and (4) MS Windows Guidebook. When you feel comfortable with the information, return to the bookshelf and click on the Game book to test your knowledge. If you are an experienced PC user, you may want to begin with the Game book, using the Guidebooks to look up answers as you need them.
HOW DO I RUN THE ADVENTURE? - To make running the books and the game easy and fun, there are buttons and icons to help you navigate and give you help. Most are located in the panel area highlighted on the right side of your screen. If a button is active, it is displayed in color. If a button is inactive, it is displayed in grey. Let's take a look at each of these controls...
MAP GRID BUTTON - While you are in the game, a map, such as the one below, is displayed in the lower right above the arrows to help visually track your progress around the island (level 1) or in the caves (level 2).
GAME BUTTON - While you are in a Guidebook, a button like the one below appears in the lower right, above the arrows. Clicking on this button takes you back to current game if one is in progress. If you have not already started a game, clicking on it starts a new game.
BOOKSHELF BUTTON - Pressing this button takes you to the Bookshelf where you can select one of the Guidebooks or start a new Compaq Adventure Game. If there is already a game in progress, it will be lost if you begin a new one. You will receive a warning of this when you press this button.
EXIT BUTTON - Pressing this button exits the Adventure and takes you back to the Learning Center. Your current status in the Adventure is saved. As long as you log on with the same initials, you will have the option of resuming your session. The exit selection also offers you an option to delete the Adventure files. Keep in mind that, once deleted, you cannot run the Adventure again.
HELP BUTTON - Pressing this button puts you into a special mode that provides help information for all the interface features. The help is an abbreviated version of this overview and "pops up" when your mouse pointer passes over an item. To turn it on you click on the help button, then click on it again to turn it off.
PRINT BUTTON - Pressing this button prints out a copy of the current Guidebook screen on your printer. If you do not have a printer attached and ready, you will receive an error message.
GUIDEBOOK BUTTONS - Pressing one of these buttons opens a guidebook and takes you to the table of contents for the guidebook. If you do this while in a game session, pressing the Game Button will bring you right back to where you left.
NAVIGATION ARROWS - In the game, these arrows allow you to move North, South, East or West on the island. Your movement also is reflected on the map located in the lower right above the arrows. In a guidebook, the arrows only point forward and backward for movement in the book.
TEXT AREA - This area contains text explanations and/or instructions. There is a scroll bar to the right of the text.
SCROLL BAR AND ARROWS - When the bar is white, as shown in the example on the left, it means that there is no additional text to scroll and see. When the scroll bar is grey, as shown in the example on the right, click on the down arrow to see text below the visible window. Click the up arrow to see text above the scroll area. You also can click on the scroll bar itself to move up or down in the text.
GRAPHIC AND INTERACTION AREA - This area of the screen is used to display graphics and also acts as an area for interacting with the game and the guidebooks. This is where you will key in responses to questions.
SCORE BAR - This area accumulates your score as you proceed through the game. You add to your score with correct answers and by picking up gold coins. Your score goes down if you answer questions incorrectly.
This completes the overview. To return to the bookshelf, click on the Exit Overview button. Once at the bookshelf you can select one of the five books to use by clicking on it with your mouse. Don't forget that you have access to the Help information. Have fun!
