Network Copy Detection (NCD)
============================

About network copy detection
----------------------------
Network copy detection (NCD) is included in this release of Aldus
Persuasion for Windows. Network administrators benefit from this
feature, which helps them ensure that users on the network are operating
Aldus Persuasion 3.0 within the legal rights granted by the Aldus
Licensing Agreement.

Working with network copy detection
-----------------------------------
The Aldus Persuasion 3.0 license agreement permits one person to use
a purchased copy of Aldus Persuasion at one time. Refer to the license
agreement card in the Aldus Persuasion 3.0 box for details.

For additional licenses, contact:
Aldus Customer Service
800-628-2320 (U.S. and Canadian customers)
or contact an Aldus distributor or dealer in your country.

You are responsible for ensuring that Aldus Persuasion 3.0 is used in
accordance with the software license agreement. If you have a Novell
Netware network (version 2.15 or later), Aldus Persuasion's built-in
network copy detection helps you ensure legal usage at your site.

Each copy of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 has a unique identification number
that identifies it on a Novell network. (Copies of Aldus Persuasion 3.0
installed from the same disk set have the same network identification
number.) When a copy of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 licensed for a single-
user is started, its network identification number is broadcast over the
network in a semaphore. Users starting an additional copy of Aldus
Persuasion 3.0 with the same network identification number will be
required to exit Aldus Persuasion 3.0 immediately.

If your copy of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 is licensed for multiple users,
the network identification number is logged in the server bindery
along with the number of legal users allowed for that copy. Each time
a copy with the same network identification number is started, the
number of legal users is decreased by one. If a user starts a copy of
Aldus Persuasion 3.0 when the number of legal users has been
decreased to zero, that user will be required to exit Aldus Persuasion
3.0 immediately. (If they have been working in Aldus Persuasion 3.0
before they logged on to the network, they are allowed to save their work.)

As soon as a user exits Aldus Persuasion 3.0, the number of legal users
for that copy increases by one. If there is a system crash or a power
failure, the user's session is not cleared from the server bindery until
that user starts Aldus Persuasion 3.0 again from the same machine
and then exits.

Enabling network copy detection (Novell users only)
---------------------------------------------------
WINBUMPS allows you to enable the network server to track multiple
copies of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 using NCD. WINBUMPS is installed in
the ALDUS directory when you install Aldus Persuasion 3.0.

Note: You do not need to enable the network server for NCD if you
purchased a copy of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 licensed for a single-user.

WINBUMPS uses Novell-supplied application calls (APIs) to add an
object (ALDUSNCD) to your server's bindery. These application calls
are the same calls the supervisor's software uses to add new users and
information to the bindery. (If you want, you can back up the server
bindery before you begin.)

The ALDUSNCD object tracks information about users: their network
card identification number, their Aldus Persuasion 3.0 network
identification number, and the maximum number of users permitted to
run the same copy of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 at once. You can retrieve
this information from the server bindery with the WINBUMPS
program. See "Monitoring network copy detection" below for details.

To enable the network server:
1. Restart your computer and log on to the network.
2. Start Windows (3.1 or later).
3. Double-click WINBUMPS.EXE in the ALDUS directory on your hard disk.
4. Choose "Show Preferred" from the Server menu to confirm the name of
the network server. If the network server shown is not correct, run the
Windows File Manager and detach all network servers except the one you
want to enable. The network server you enable for NCD is the same server
on which network users log in.
5. Choose "Enable Preferred" from the Server menu to enable the network
server for NCD.
6.  Exit WINBUMPS.

Monitoring network copy detection (Novell users only)
-----------------------------------------------------
If your copy of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 is licensed for multiple users, you
can use the WINBUMPS program to get a list of current Aldus
Persuasion users from the server bindery. If you haven't done so
already, you'll need to enable the network server for NCD following the
instructions listed in "Enabling network copy detection" earlier in this file.

To generate a report of current users:
1.  Restart your computer.
2. Start Windows (3.1 or later).
3. Double-click WINBUMPS.EXE in the ALDUS directory on your hard disk.
4. Choose "Show Preferred" from the Server menu to confirm the name of
the network server. If the network server shown is not correct, run the
Windows File Manager and detach all network servers except the one you
want to check.
5. Choose "Log Info to File" from the File menu.
6. Specify a name and directory location where you want the log file to be
saved, and then click "OK."
7.  Exit WINBUMPS.

A list of the users of all Aldus products that use NCD, the network
identification number associated with each open copy of an Aldus product,
and the identification number of the network card in each workstation is
saved to the log file. To view the results, open the log file in a text-editing
program such as Windows Notepad.

What to do if you get an alert message
--------------------------------------
Immediately save your presentation, and then exit Aldus Persuasion 3.0.
If you do not save and exit, you may lose unsaved changes to your
presentation. You can restart Aldus Persuasion 3.0 as soon as the other
users exit the identical copies.

Installing individual copies on workstations on a network
---------------------------------------------------------
Installation of Aldus Persuasion 3.0 on a networked workstation is
identical to installation on a non-networked workstation.

Do not install the same disk set on multiple workstations; this will trigger
the NCD alert. To avoid this, add concurrent users of Aldus Persuasion
3.0 as described in the "Working with network copy detection" section.

If you are setting up a license pack or additionally purchased copies of the
program on a network, note which disk sets are used to install Aldus
Persuasion 3.0 on which workstations. If you need to reinstall the program
later, you must use the same disk set used for the original installation.

====================
Viewing the Tutorial
====================

When you view the Tutorial, if "Show annotations" is checked on the
Annotations menu, the information you see will be incomplete. Press
Ctrl + m to display the menu bar, and then uncheck "Show annotations"
on the Annotations menu.

===========================
Using the Persuasion Player
===========================

Autojumps
When you want to run a Player file that includes jumps to Player files
on a network, move the Player files into the same folder or directory as
the Windows (or Macintosh) Player. That way, the Player won't have
difficulty locating the files it needs to jump to.

Annotations
In the Windows Player, Player file annotations appear in Arial font. If
TrueType fonts are disabled, annotations will appear in the
MS Sans Serif screen font. If the MS San Serif screen font is not
available, annotations will appear in the Symbol screen font.

Starting the Player
To avoid problems starting the Player from a network server, copy
the Player to the hard disk of your local computer before you start.

Show-list files
You cannot transfer Windows-generated show-list files to the
Macintosh. You must create show-list files on the platform you
are running player from.

============================================
Transferring presentations between platforms
============================================

Charts and tables
If a Persuasion 3.0 presentation containing charts or tables is
transferred from Windows to the Macintosh, the charts or tables are
displayed as Aldus Chart or Aldus Table application icons with
badges. To display the charts or tables themselves, choose "Redraw"
from the badge menu. Also, when Persuasion 2.1 presentations with
charts in them are opened in Persuasion 3.0, you must double-click
the chart to open it before it can be used as a chart.

Object placement on slides
When you transfer a presentation from the Macintosh to Windows,
objects on your slides may appear to have shifted. This apparent shift
occurs because the Macintosh screen displays only the printable area
of a slide, whereas Windows displays the entire page. The objects are
actually in the same position with respect to the center of the slide.

PICT and WMF graphics
Any PICT or WMF graphic, such as clip art, can be transferred
between Windows and the Macintosh if you first ungroup it. Once
the graphic is ungrouped, saved, and opened in interchange format,
you can group it and use it as if you had transferred the original
imported/grouped graphic.

===================================
Persuasion's font translation table
===================================

Persuasion for Windows provides built-in font substitutions for
transferring files between Windows and the Macintosh. Even if you
have the same font (with the same spelling) on both the Macintosh
and Windows, Persuasion's font substitutions are used unless you
override the substitutions. You can override Persuasion's
substitutions by defining a [FontTranslation] section in your PR3.INI file.

Using a word processor, create a [FontTranslation] section, and
enter one line for each substitution. For example, the following
entry would cause all references to Times on the Macintosh to be
replaced with TimesNewRomanPS in Windows:

[FontTranslation]
Times=TimesNewRomanPS

You can add optional keywords at the end of an entry, using
commas for separations. These options specify emphasis alterations,
font family overrides, and character selection.

Emphasis
	bold
	italic
Font Family
	roman
	swiss
	modern
	script
	decorative
Character set
	ansi
	symbol
	oem

For example, if an italicized Macintosh font closely resembles a
Windows font, an italic version of the Windows font can be
requested within a substitution as follows:

I New Century Schlbk Italic=NewCenturySchlbk,italic

If your Macintosh and Windows both supply a font under identical
names, font substitution is undesirable. A built-in substitution may
be removed by specifying the original and replacement names as
being the same. For example:

GillSans=GillSans

The default Persuasion font substitution list is as follows (to
override these settings, create a font translation section in
PR3.INI as described above):

Geneva=Arial
Avant Garde=AvantGarde
P Bodoni Poster=BodoniPoster
Cooper Black=CooperBlack
Franklin Gothic No.2=Frank Goth
Freestyle Script=FreestyleScript
Gill Sans=GilSans
HelveCompressed=HelvCompressed
95 Helvetica Black=Helvetica-Black
45 Helvetica Light=Helvetica-Light
N Helvetica Narrow=Helvetica-Narrow
New Century Schlbk=NewCenturySchlbk
B New Century Schlbk Bold=NewCenturySchlbk,bold
I New Century Schlbk Italic=NewCenturySchlbk,italic
Bl New Century Schlbk BoldIt=NewCenturySchlbk,bold,italic
D Peignot Demi=Peignot Demi
Symbol=Symbol,symbol,decorative
University Roman=UniversityRoman
T VAG Rounded Thin=VAG Rounded Th
Zapf Chancery=ZapfChancery
Zapf Dingbats=ZapfDingbats

=============================================
Using PageMaker 4.0 files with Persuasion 3.0
=============================================

When you install PageMaker 5.0, you get a filter called PMIMP.P5F.
If you want to import PageMaker 4.0 stories into Persuasion 3.0, you
need to rename this filter to PMIMP.FLT and make sure it is in the
ALDUS\USENGLSH\FILTER directory. Note that this is only for
PageMaker 4.0 files. You can import PageMaker 5.0 stories
without doing this.

===============================================
Using QuickTime for Windows with CorelDraw! 4.0
===============================================

If you have CorelDraw! 4.0, and you plan to install Quick Time for
Windows 1.1.1, you must first remove the following files from your
Windows\System directory:

QTIM.DLL
QTIMCMGR.DLL
QTNOTIFY.EXE

==================================
Word 6.0 filter for Persuasion 3.0
==================================

To import Word 6.0 files into Persuasion 3.0, you must have the Word 6
filter, which is available from the Aldus BBS or through Aldus Customer
Services (800-628-2320) for a nominal fee. The Aldus BBS is available
to anyone who has a modem.

To receive the filter via the Aldus BBS, follow these steps:

1. Dial (206) 623-6984.

2. Follow the prompts for your name and number, choose the
"Software Library," and then choose "Windows Software Library."

3. Download the file called WD60LE.ZIP.

==============================
Using larger bullets on slides
==============================

In Persuasion, you can use the ASCII character for bullets (Alt+0149)
to print a large bullet in a body text placeholder.

1. Display the text slide master, and then click in the
body text placeholder.

2. Choose "Define bullets..." from the Master menu.

3. In the "Define bullets" dialog box, click inside a level box,
and then press Alt + 0149 using the numeric keypad.

4. Click "OK" to exit the dialog box.

===================================================================
Using Persuasion 3.0 with Windows for Workgroups on a Novell server
===================================================================

Read this section only if you have a Novell network installed and you
want to use UNC (Universal Naming Convention) with the
Novell servers.

UNC provides the ability to access a file on another computer without
having a drive mapped to it. If you move your presentation to another
computer on the same network, you don't need to remap the drives to
match your original computer. To make UNCs work with Novell
servers using Windows for Workgroups, you need to use VLMs
instead of IPXODI/NETX. Consult your network administrator on
how to do this. Use the following steps as a guide (your setup may
require some modifications).

1. Get WINUP9 and DOSUP9 (or later) upgrade files from Novell or
from Novell's CompuServe forum. These files are self-extracting and
instructions are included in the TXT files: WINUP9.TXT,
DOSUP9.TXT, and READVLM.TXT.

2. Follow the instructions in the WINUP9.TXT file to update your
Windows network-related files. For example, a minimum installation
might need only the following files in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

VIPX.386, VNETWARE.386, NETWARE.DRV, NETWARE.HLP, NWGDI.DLL, NWUSER.EXE

3. Follow the instructions in the DOSUP9.TXT and READVLM.TXT
files to install or upgrade VLMs. For example, you need to add a line
reading "lastdrive=z" in your CONFIG.SYS file, copy *.VLM files to
your C:\NWCLIENT directory, and so on.

4. Modify the STARTNET.BAT file, typically located in the
C:\NWCLIENT directory. A portion of the file is shown below. Note
that 3C503 is the network interface card installed on the PC. The
3C503.COM driver probably came with your network interface card.

	C:\NWCLIENT\LSL
	C:\NWCLIENT\3C503
	C:\NWCLIENT\IPXODI
	C:\NWCLIENT\VLM
	C:\WINDOWS\ODIHLP.EXE

5. If you were not using VLMs already, you might need to create a
NET.CFG file in you C:\NWCLIENT directory. A sample of this file
for the above PC follows. Consult your network administrator or your
Novell documentation for further parameters.

	FILE HANDLES = 60
	SHOW DOTS = ON
	PB BUFFERS 7

	Protocol ODINUP
		BIND 3C503
		BUFFERED

	Link Driver 3C503
		Frame Ethernet_II
		Frame Ethernet_802.3
		Frame Ethernet_802.2
		Frame Ethernet_SNAP
		INT  5
		PORT 350
		MEM  CC00

	NetWare DOS Requester
	SET DEFAULTS=ON
	FIRST NETWORK DRIVE=P

6. Test your Novell setup.

7. Re-run Windows setup to make it recognize your new configuration.

8. Re-edit CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT, as necessary.
You still need the line "lastdrive=z." and ODIHLP.EXE needs to be
in the correct sequence (see step 4).

=============================
Persuasion 3.0 and Windows NT
=============================

Persuasion for Windows 3.0 does not support either
Windows NT or Microsoft's Windows95 (Chicago) operating
system.

=================================
Deleting unused transition sounds
=================================

If you attempt to delete unused sounds, and the sound you want to delete
doesn't appear in the "Delete unused sounds" dialog box, it is possible
that the sound is assigned to a layer that no longer exists. To remove the
sound permanently from the presentation, you must recreate the missing
layer, then choose "Transitions," from the View menu to assign "None"
as the sound for the layer. You can then delete the unused sound from
the presentation.

==================================
Additional information on printing
==================================

Printing the outline in grayscale mode
--------------------------------------
Check that your presentation is not in grayscale mode before you print
your outline. If you print the outline in grayscale mode, the text is
white and does not appear on the page.

Printing with the Microsoft PostScript driver
---------------------------------------------
Persuasion can make the best use of the printable area of your printer
if you use the default margins instead of no margins. (Choose "Slide
setup..." from the File menu and click "Setup..." in the dialog box. In
the setup dialog box, click "Options...." Set the margins to "Default.")
To avoid problems with imaging bitmap graphics, do not choose the
Adobe Document Structuring Conventions in the Options dialog box.

To avoid problems using the Genigraphics driver, you can send
PostScript files to your Genigraphics device. Use the Microsoft
PostScript driver to generate a PostScript file and then send that
file to Genigraphics. Note: Set the margins to "None" instead of
"Default" before you send the file.

Printing with a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4 printer
--------------------------------------------------
Some LaserJet 4 printers are shipped with version 3.53 of the
Microsoft PostScript driver. That version of the driver is not
compatible with Persuasion and should be replaced with a
later version. The current version is 3.58.

Adobe PostScript driver version 2.1.1
---------------------------------------------
Persuasion 3.0 does not support the Adobe PostScript driver
version 2.1.1. If you have problems printing with this driver,
use a different PostScript driver.

Imaging to a film recorder using a printer driver
-------------------------------------------------
Two problems that are likely to occur when you image to a film
recorder using a printer driver:
--Pattern fills will have lines or bands in them.
--A white band will appear on one or more sides of the image on the slide.

To fix the first problem, add a section to the PR3.INI for this printer.
The section title is the printer name, such as [QMS Colorscript 100].
Under this heading add this line: DeviceIsScaling=1.This tells
Persuasion that the driver does not know the ultimate device
resolution. For the second problem, Persuasion initializes the
printable area of film recorders to black (but not printers). When
you use a printer driver for a film recorder, Persuasion omits the
black initialization, since it would look bad on the printed page.
The following entry in the PR3.INI section described above can
correct this:
BkgFillRGB=0 0 0

=============================
Black-and-white AutoTemplates
=============================

Several black-and-white AutoTemplates you can use to make overheads
have been included with Persuasion 3.0. You can find them in a
directory labelled "B&W" inside the "Overhead" directory inside the
"AutoTemplates" directory.
