What is the Best Way to Manage Heat Rash?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION: My problem is a rash that develops whenever I am overheated, or am
out in hot sunlight. Not only is this embarrassing but very uncomfortable as
well. What is the best way to manage this problem?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANSWER: The tiny red bumps that develop in a case of heat rash (also known as
"prickly heat", an obvious name to anyone who has suffered with this problem)
result when the bright sunlight or heat inflames the sweat ducts and close
them off. This occurs most frequently under the arms, to the chest and skin
under the breasts, the inner elbows and the groin. To resolve the problem,
you have to get out of the heat, so that your body can cool down. An air
conditioned room is best, and drinking a full glass of ice water will help as
well. Then try a cool bath, or apply cool compresses to the skin that is
affected. A change of clothing to something very light and loose will allow
the cooling off process to continue. Although the itchy sensation may tempt
you to use a soothing cream or ointment, that is a no-no, as the cream will
keep the keep sweat glands sealed and just make the condition worse.
