I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW: Diabetic Retinopathy

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When diabetes continues for years without adequate control, it can cause
serious complications and changes in the blood vessels of the body, and in
particular the vessels that run across the back of the eye. When the retina
is touched by these changes, serious problems with vision can occur, which
require special treatment to reduce the progress of the disease. The
condition is called "Diabetic Retinopathy" and that is the title of a fine
brochure available from the kind people at the American Academy of
Ophthalmology. I know from the frequent questions I receive, that this is a
subject that interests many of you, and advise you to obtain a copy of this
booklet for yourself. Send your request to The American Academy of
Ophthalmology, Attention Order Clerk -DR, P.O. Box 7424, San Francisco, CA
94120-7424. Be sure to include a stamped, self addressed long envelope with
your request. Your booklet will contain the answers that explain just what
diabetic retinopathy is, it's cause and symptoms, explanations about detection
and treatment and just who can treat diabetic retinopathy. Successful
treatment will depend upon early detection and treatment, proper monitoring,
and also your own attitude and self care. If you suspect you may have this
problem, or know someone that does do not delay sending for this free,
interesting and informative booklet.
