When You Feel More Anxious in the Morning

QUESTION:  I know I have a chronic anxiety problem, but I feel more anxious in
the morning than I do the rest of the day.  Can this really be?

ANSWER:  Yes, there appears to be a cyclic variation in how some people with
anxiety or depression feel during the day.  People with anxiety disorders
alone are more likely to have more symptoms of their problem during the
afternoon or evening than in the morning.  The same pattern holds true for
people with anxiety mixed with depression.  On the other hand, people
suffering from melancholia (depression marked by physical and mental apathy,
brooding, lack of activity, and sad thoughts) usually have their most severe
symptoms in the morning.
     There appears to be a cyclic nature to other mental illnesses, also, with
the cycles ranging from daily to monthly or longer.  Many people who suffer
panic attacks say they are more likely to have them in the middle of the
night.  Women who have panic attacks are more likely to experience them just
before their monthly period.
