I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW: Hearing Impairment

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hearing Impairment" the latest in Metropolitan Life Insurance Company's
"Stay Well" series of brochures on health topics, is available from the
company's Health and Safety Division. The most common questions about
hearing loss are answered in the brochure, which discusses the nation's
number 1 physical impairment, affecting more than 16 million persons.
Three out of 10 Americans age 65 or over suffer from some form of hearing
impairment. This great little booklet describes some of the most common
conditions, their causes, treatment and symptoms to look for in
identifying them. If you have trouble figuring out just what each of the
many medical specialties concerned with hearing care can do, such as
otologist, audiologist, or otolaryngologist, the booklet will help you
sort them out, as it provides clear descriptions of each specialty and it
area of expertise. Particular attention is paid to identifying a hearing
problem in a child, and details the normal reactions of babies to a loud
clap, produced at a distance of from three to six feet from the child. It
is an easy and important test you can perform in your own home. When a
hearing loss is suspected, the proper steps towards a complete diagnosis
and evaluation are also outlined. At any age, anyone who shows signs of
hearing loss should seek professional advice, says this brochure, because
today many solutions are available in addition to well designed hearing
aids. How to go about getting proper aid is also outlined. Single copies
of "Hearing Impairments" are available free to you. To get your copy send
a stamped self-addressed long business envelope to "Hearing Impairments",
Health and Safety Education, Area 16-UV, Metropolitan Life Insurance
Company, One Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10010. It is clear to me that
every family can profit from the valuable information contained in this
most informative booklet.
