OXYMETHOLONE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BRAND NAME (Manufacturer):
     Anadrol-50 (Syntex)
TYPE OF DRUG:
     Anabolic hormone
INGREDIENT:
     oxymetholone
DOSAGE FORM:
     Tablets (50 mg)
STORAGE:
Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

USES

This medication is used to treat anemia and osteoporosis (bone loss).
Oxymetholone belongs to a group of drugs known as anabolic hormones
(steroids). It works by promoting the buildup of body tissues, including red
blood cells and bone.

TREATMENT

You can take oxymetholone either on an empty stomach or, to reduce
stomach irritation, with food or milk (as directed by your doctor).
If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, do not
take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule. Do
not double the next dose.

SIDE EFFECTS

     Minor.

Chills, decreased sexual ability, diarrhea, increased or decreased sexual
desire, stomach upset, or trouble sleeping. These side effects should
disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.

     Major.

Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
particularly bothersome. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
acne or oily skin; bloody or black, tarry stools; breath odor; deepening of
the voice (in women); depression; enlarged or painful breasts (in both sexes);
increased or decreased hair growth; headaches; loss of appetite; menstrual
irregularities; muscle cramps; sore throat or fever; swelling of the feet or
legs; unusual bleeding or bruising; weakness; weight gain or loss; or
yellowing of the eyes or skin.

INTERACTIONS

Oxymetholone interacts with several other types of drugs:
     1. It can increase the effects of oral anticoagulants (blood thinners,
such as warfarin), which can lead to bleeding complications.
     2. Diabetic patients should know that oxymetholone can decrease blood
glucose levels. The dosage of oral antidiabetic medications or insulin may,
therefore, need to be adjusted when this medication is being taken.
BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
taking, especially any of those listed above.

WARNINGS

     * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
any medications, especially to oxymetholone or to other anabolic hormones
(such as dromostanolone, nandrolone, oxandrolone, or stanozolol).
     * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
you now have or if you have ever had breast cancer, heart disease,
hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels), kidney disease, liver disease,
prostate cancer, or an enlarged prostate gland.
     * To obtain maximum benefit from this medication, eat a well-balanced
diet that provides adequate protein and calories. Athletes sometimes use
anabolic steroids to increase performance. However, there is conflicting and
inconclusive evidence as to whether these drugs increase muscle strength.
There is also some question as to their safety.
     * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Oxymetholone crosses
the placenta and can cause masculine characteristics, such as increased body
hair, in the developing fetus. (Note: This drug does NOT affect the sex of
the fetus, which is determined at conception.) Also, tell your doctor if you
are breast-feeding an infant. It is not known whether oxymetholone passes
into breast milk.
