SAIL95 README.TXT FILE

This file contains information on the following:

(1) Last minute changes to the information contained within the manual.

(2) Information on how to obtain technical support for Sail 95.

(3) Information on how to obtain a 32 bit version for Windows NT or Windows
    95.

(4) Information about the compression/decompression program QUANTUM.

CHANGES TO THE MANUAL:

Copy Protection:
There is one copy protection question during the installation referencing
the manual. There is no copy protection thereafter. Please do not let
anyone who has not bought the full program install it using the manual.
I have put over 6,000 hours into creating this product and am also putting
everything I own into its manufacture and promotion.

Large Fonts:
If you do not have LARGE FONTS selected for your 1024 x 768 x 256 color
video driver, you will NOT BE ABLE TO READ THE COPY PROTECTION QUESTIONS.
Make sure you have large fonts selected for your video driver.

Frame Rate:
Remember that Sail 95 is a 1024 x 768 Windows application. It is not a
flight simulator: a frame rate above 4 fps is good and one above 8 is
excellent. The simulator is not really designed to run at a frame rate
greater than 12 fps and will actually try to slow itself down if the frame
rate goes over 10 fps. (If you get a frame rate greater than 12, the only
deleterious effect is aesthetic: the water will seem to go by too quickly.
I'd be interested in knowing what your hardware is.) See the manual for a
  discussion of performance considerations.

If you are experiencing a slow frame rate, it is possible to freeze either
the tactical view window or the cockpit view window from within the
simulation. This will significantly improve the frame rate within the other
windows. Game play will not be affected except that if the cockpit view is
frozen, you cannot use the steering wheel or cockpit winches. Right click
your mouse and use the rudder and sheeting bars to control your yacht.

To freeze the tactical view press the tab key on your keyboard. This key
will act as a toggle: pressing it again will unfreeze the view. To freeze
and unfreeze the cockpit view, press the spacebar.

Note that a frozen view will remain disabled even if you exit to the main
menu and start a new race. (It will be blank.) Hitting the appropriate key
  will restore the view.

Telltale Yarns:
Telltale yarns have been added to the jib of your ship in the cockpit view.
These provide an additional method of refining your sail trim. There are
two yarns: a red yarn on the right hand side of the jib and a green one on
the left. If one of the yarns is flapping, you need to adjust your sail
  trim as follows:
If the red yarn is flapping head up if on a port tack.
If the red yarn is flapping fall off if on a starboard tack.
If the green yarn is flapping fall off if on a port tack.
If the green yarn is flapping head up if on a starboard tack.

Reloading Images:
If you need to recreate the sailboat images for whatever reason, you can do
this by running LOAD16.EXE. This is shown in the Program Manager group as
an anchor icon labeled "Reload Images." ONLY RUN THIS PROGRAM IF YOU HAVE
LEFT THE "SHIP" SUBDIRECTORY INTACT. If you have deleted the "SHIP"
subdirectory as suggested on page 7 of the manual you will need to reinstall
from the diskettes by running SETUP.EXE again.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT:

Our technical support number is (203) 664-1634. Our hours are 10 AM till 7 PM
eastern time (7 AM till 4 PM pacific time) Monday through Friday.

We are also able to offer support through Compuserve, the Internet, and the US
  mail.

We can be reached via Compuserve mail at: 70413,2745

We can be reached via E-mail at: 70413.2745@compuserve.com

If you do not have access to a modem, our snail mail address is:

          Technical Support
          Vivid Simulations
          90 High Street
          Clinton, CT 06413

If you are having problems installing the software, ensure you've read the
installation section of the manual thoroughly. Making sure Windows isn't
running anything at startup and then rebooting your computer will often cure
  a problem.

It is possible to do a manual installation as follows:

    (1) run QWIN.EXE from Diskette One. Decompress "ARCHIVE.Q" to a path on
your hard drive (i.e. "C:\SAIL95"). When Quantum says "file not found
...ARCHIVE.002" insert the second diskette, and press enter.
"ARCHIVE.003" is on the third diskette.
    (2) Switch to the drive and directory you decompressed the files to and
        run "LOAD16.EXE."
    (3) Manually set up Program Manger Icons for "SAIL95.EXE" and, if you
wish, "LOAD16.EXE." (You can use an icon from SAIL16.EXE for this --
        there are three choices.)

32 BIT VERSION OF SAIL 95:

The 16 bit version of this program will run under Windows NT. A 32 Bit
version is, however, also available. It is somewhat faster under NT than
the 16 bit version. If you would like the 32-Bit version of this program
for use with Windows NT or Windows 95 (when it becomes available),
  send $7 + $3 S&H ($10 total, CT residents $10.35 total) to us at:

          32 Bit Upgrade
          Vivid Simulations
          90 High Street
          Clinton, CT 06413

Please enclose your registration card if you have not already mailed it in.
We will only offer this upgrade to registered users.

QUANTUM COMPRESSION/DECOMPRESSION PROGRAM

The subdirectory entitled QUANTUM contains the full beta version of this
very efficient compression/decompression utility. This program is
Copyright (c) 1993,1994 Cinematronics. See the files READ.ME and QUANTUM.DOC
within the QUANTUM subdirectory for more information about this program.

This is the end of the README.TXT file.
