DISK CACHING:
If you are using disk caching software, it is necessary to
disable the write behind caching option. Some disk caching
software also calls this option background writing. Please
    consult your documentation for details.

*****************************************************************************
*****************************************************************************

Scenario Disk Installation Note:
When you install the Scenario Disks you should see a message
saying that "files already exist, do you want to delete them
and install anyway?" This is OK, you may continue with the
    install.

If you have problems installing the game you may want to try
running the install program with the "-s" option on (install -s).
There have been occasional problems with the sound auto detect
and certain SCSI drive setups. The -s option turns off sound
    auto detection.

*****************************************************************************
*****************************************************************************

Scenario Disk Notes:

1. If you have to re-install the scenario disk make sure that you
are currently flying with an East Coast squadron.

2. When making a mission do not use a random plane as a waypoint
for an object since this object may not show up in the mission.

3. Be sure to read your mission briefings carefully. Rules of
Engagement and other important information will be found there.

4. For missions where you are to persuade planes to leave an area,
fly up next to the leader of the group and see if he will follow
you. You will get a message when he does.

5. The "Refueler" and "Go Refuel" actions were left in the Mission
Builder in the event that they can be implemented in the future.

6. In some missions you will experience Comm Jamming. This is to
help represent the fog of war. The effect of Comm Jamming will
change depending on your distance from the Hawkeye.

7. When making a mission keep in mind that the more planes you use,
especially planes from different countries (ie have different
texture maps), the more EMS memory will be used. If you don't
have a lot of extra memory you may lose some features (See
    memory limitations below).

8. The ranges on the missiles given in the mission builder are the
ranges that the other planes like to use. Your wingman can fire
out to the full range of his missiles like you.

Changes & Fixes as of 9/12/94

1. While looking at Briefing Map, you may click on planes to see
what they are. If you click on the name of the plane you will
see the waypoints for those planes. CAPs will only have one
    waypoint.

2. Game will now run fine with faster machines. Planes will now
takeoff from the carrier correctly. Your plane will not start
jumping after flying for a long time.

3. Shift F-10 will view planes in opposite order of F-10.

4. You should not have problems locking bogeys up with TWSM,
and missiles fired while in TWSM will always track like they
should (under certain conditions in previous versions,
AIM-54s would sometimes not go after the plane it was fired
    at).

5. AAA light in cockpit will now shut off after leaving area
    with AAA.

If you were not running version 1.2 of the game (ie you have not
installed a patch) then further fixes and changes will be listed
further below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memory Limitations
-------------------
If your system does not have enough EMS to fully run Fleet Defender,
some features will not be loaded. The following items could be
excluded depending on your memory situation.

1. No Digital Speech
2. No Textures on Ground Objects
3. RIO heads will not move
4. Some ships/aircraft may not have textures

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following keyboard controls were not documented in the FD
manual.

Shift F - (F-14 Formation Lights) - Toggles illumination of F-14
           formation lights.

U key - (Uncage SideWinder) - "Uncage Sidewinder" will "uncage"
the Sidewinder seeker head from the radar lock. The U
key can be used to cycle thru any available heat
sources. The seeker head indicator that is displayed on
the HUD will stop nutating about the radar lock diamond
and will nutate around the center of the HUD.

Shift U - (Cage SideWinder) - "Cages Sidewinder" will "cage" the
Sidewinder seeker head to the radar. You will observe
the seeker head nutating about the radar lock diamond.

Shift B - (Toggles Message Alert) Turns ON/OFF audible alert (BEEP)
when a new message is displayed to the bottom of the
           screen.

Shift W - (Toggles Water Texture) Turns ON/OFF texture mapped
           water.

Keypad 8 - Not Available.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Controller Information
-----------------------
The ThrustMaster download files (.ADV) have been included in the
THRUSTMS sub-directory.

Notice to ThrustMaster users using the MARK II WCS in analog mode:
When you use the landing cheat key (E KEY), you must regulate the
throttle setting manually. FLEET DEFENDER will normally adjust
your speed automatically for your position in the landing pattern
when using the E key.

When you download the ThrustMaster files into the Mark II WCS,
press button #1 to "wake up" the processor before proceeding
into the flight portion of the game.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Misc. Information
------------------
1. When selecting a new squadron, the default campaign is Oceana.
Make sure you select the desired campaign after selecting a
    new squadron.

2. When changing from Oceana to a regular campaign, make sure that
you turn training mode off in the difficulty screen.

3. Click the OTHER button in the Rio map or briefing map to see
the flight path of escorted planes.

4. To add a Fleet Defender icon to the windows desktop, you must:
        (a) be running in Windows,
        (b) run the f14-2win.exe, either by double-clicking on the
file from File Manager; or explicitly from the Run
selection of the main Windows menu.
This will add a Microprose program group with the Fleet
Defender icon to the main desktop.

To then launch Fleet Defender from Windows, double click on
        the Fleet Defender icon.

Fleet Defender runs as a full screen DOS .pif under windows,
        not as a windows application.

5. If you are launching from Catapult 4 (the leftmost waist
catapult), applying full back stick before takeoff will cause
you to crash into the deck. Do not apply back stick until well
    clear of the deck.

6. By position, the medals on the Medal Screen are:
                       Navy Cross

            Silver Star Distinguished Flying Cross

Air Medal MOH Navy Commendation Medal

Purple Heart National Defense Service Medal

Manual Mistakes
---------------
1. Some degree symbols may appear as an extra zero.

2. Roll Rate is not available on the Difficulty Screen.

Boot Disk
---------

1. DoubleSpace - If you are using DoubleSpace, you must put the
    following
command lines in the Config.Sys file:

        DeviceHigh = C:\Dos\Dblspace.sys /Move

2. Packard Bell - In the past, some Packard Bell and PSI users have
reported lockups when using the bootdisk. If this occurs, go
into the config.sys and remove all characters after the word
RAM on the EMM386 line and put the number 3096 between exe
    and RAM.
