Sandstone started as a practice desert course using what I think is an
excellent background and object file created by Brian Silvernail for his
Saguaro Canyon C.C. I have modified the background substantially to get an
appearance that I hope compliments the playing of the individual holes. The
objects are mostly modified versions of Brian's and a few taken from Alan
Pajari's Yuma G.C. and a few I made just to retain some sense of creativity.
I hadn't intended to finish this until a friend said that it was becoming a
lot of fun to play in various weather conditions. That gave me the idea to
create as many variations of elevation, hazard and object placement per hole
as seemed possible and yet retain some sense of realism. My overall goal
was to create as much clarity in the shot perspectives as possible. Unlike
some other courses I've done, this has a minimum of blind shots and the
view of each green should allow for some thoughtful choices.
The mowing strips are an experiment in the perspective. Some greens have
severe breaks and will be unfair in the "dry" condition. I have extensively
mounded a number of the greens to increase difficulty in what may be a large
number of sand shots. I left out water as I was intent on using only the sand
and rock to create problems. I kept in heavy rough to lend a little random
chance to shots played from unfortunate locations. I have added real "Champ-
ion" tees somewhat further back on most holes and you can move yourself back
if you think you need more challenge. As on all my fictional courses so far,
I have tried to balance the doglegs both right and left and keep a large
number of straight holes as well. The unusual number of par 3's and 5's was
only a matter of chance. I realize that since I don't have to pay for con-
struction or maintenance, the course can exist in this environment, but then
you aren't paying for green fees or carts either.
