             * Complete Docs For World Cup Challenge *
               -------------------------------------

OK how do I start?
------------------
Let's start by getting World Cup Challenge installed on your PC.It is
installed in the same way as most other Windows products.

a) Inset Disk 1 into drive A:
b) From the Windows Program Manager menu bar, select [File],followed by
      [Run]
c) Type in A:\SETUP.EXE
d) Follow the instructions on screen.
e) If you are using Super VGA,for example 1024*768,ensure that you are
using the Small Fonts option - not Large Fonts.Large fonts can cause
the text to display in the wrong place - particularly noticeable on
      the "Watch Match screen.
f) If you do not have a SoundBlaster or similar sound system, you can
still take advantage of the sounds on this game by installing the
supplied Windows sound driver. There is a directory on your install
drive called C:\SOUNDRV.Read the three TXT files in this directory
that concern installation and usage of the driver.Once the driver is
installed, the directory SOUNDRV may be deleted.
g) Ensure that you have a SWAP-FILE of at least 4Mb before you run the
      game.Refer to the Windows manual on setting-up a SWAP-FILE.

If you are an experienced Windows user (or even a casual one) you will be
quite familiar with this.If not - learn fast!!

How do I play World Cup Challenge?
----------------------------------
You start, like most things in Windows,by "double-clicking" on the World Cup
Challenge icon. After a few seconds (if you are playing the game for the
first time) a screen will appear asking for your name.

This name is used throughout the game.Once you've done this you will be
offered the manager's job at a team that is going to USA'94 for the
duration of the tournament.

What Players have I inherited?
------------------------------
Simple.Select SQUAD from the main menu.

This screen allows you to view your team in a number of different
ways.Using the radio buttons your team can be ordered by age, stamina
etc.your job is to judge the best players for the next game(s).The training
option allows you to have a training session with your team.Training makes
a BIG difference to your team. You'll have to find out the details for
yourself, but here is a clue : if you are unable to score goals try having a
shooting session.

When you close the squad screen you will be asked if you want to hold the
training session. You can have as many training sessions as you want, but
take care - players can be trained too much. They can get injured,or maybe
just fed up of training!

How do I play a match?
----------------------
From the FIXTURES menu select either Friendly or First Round. The friendly
option is only there to enable you to play a team to get to know your
squad. We know that in USA'94 you won't be able to do this, but we figured we
would let you use this option if you felt you needed it.

If you are one of the teams due to play on the day in question you will see
a match highlighted. In this case you MUST watch the whole game.To do so
click the WATCH GAME button.

As you can see the screen has 3 areas:

1.On Pitch - the players that will start the match
2.On Bench - your substitutes
3.Squad - the rest of your players

To select a player simply click on their name in the "squad" section of the
screen. They will automatically be moved from the squad area into either the
"On Pitch" or "On Bench" area. They will be moved into the next available
"slot".To insert a new player in the middle of the list, select the existing
player one-after where you want the new player to be inserted, then select
the new player.

To drop a player click on them whilst they are in either the "On Pitch" or
"On Bench" area of the screen, and then click the "Drop" button.Presto! they
are moved into the squad area.

Confused? Probably. This action (like so many in Windows) is harder to
explain than it is to do.Try it and you'll see what we mean.

When you have chosen your starting team and your substitutes you can change
their formation by clicking the "Formation" button.

World Cup Challenge has NO Limitations on the numbers and types of
formation you create. To create a new formation click on a player number, and
whilst holding the mouse button down, move the player to their new
position. This is what Windows call "drag and drop",and you may already be
familiar with this.Note that as soon as you click on a player number, his
name appears at the top of the pitch to allow you to identify him. After you
have dragged and dropped the player the [Add] and [Update] buttons become
enabled. If you click on [Update] the CURRENT formation is updated t reflect
the new positions,if you click [Add] then you are prompted for a name for
the formation you have just created.

What Difference does the Formation make?
----------------------------------------
In most games none! In World Cup Challenge, however, every
pass, tackle, cross, save and shot (in fact every player movement at all)is
ACTUALLY PLAYED by the computer. The commentary that you see running is
real-in the background are 22 players whose every action is being
calculated by the computer. In fact if the screen could be refreshed fast
enough under Windows we would show all 22 players, and we will be doing this
with our League soccer game in the near future. If you choose a crazy
formation then the chances are you won't win many games.BUT don't forget
that the computer players are not stupid - if you tell them to play in a
really crazy manner they may just ignore you and switch to a more orthodox
way of playing.

OK What next?
-------------
Well,we've chosen our team,selected out formation,so let's PLAY FOOTBALL!

At this point you could just click [Continue] and play the match, but it is
much wiser to pay a visit to the [Tactics] area first.

Here you have 5 areas to set tactics in,with an unlimited number of ways to
affect the outcome of the match.

The options are:

1. Attack Direction - You can choose to attack straight down the middle of
the pitch, down either wing,or down both wings.

2.Passing Style - You can vary your passing style between a ground passing
  style or aerial style.

3.Defend / Attack - Tell your team to push forward, defend in depth or
  somewhere in between.

4.Aggression - How hard do you want your players to tackle? Be warned that
if you tackle hard you will win the ball more often but will also suffer
  more red/yellow cards and injuries.

5.Commitment - The more commitment you show, the more of the ball you will
win.Again there is a down-side to this. The more commitment you show the
faster your players will get tired, and they may lose stamina that they
  could use in later matches.

By now you can probably see that there are Literally thousands of ways that
the above can affect the outcome of a match. You can change tactics at any
point in the game,so watch the game and THINK FOOTBALL.Think what you would
do if you were 4-0 in the lead.Would you insist on 100% commitment,or maybe
slow down for a bit and take it easy for the rest of the match?

The Match
-----------
To start playing the match click the [Continue] button..The time elapsed
will display in the right hand side of the pitch. At half-time the game will
pause and you will be able to look at some match statistics. You can make a
substitution at any time in the game by clicking the [Subs] button.

Substitutions
-------------
After the [Subs] button has been pressed the substitution screen will be
shown:

To make a substitution click on the player you want to take off, then the
player want to bring on.Finally click the "Substitute" button, and the
switch is made.Notice that you can also tell your players to switch
Formation at this time as well.

If a player is injured or had a red/yellow card,it is shown on this
screen.

Match Statistics
----------------
At the end of the match two statistics screens are shown. The first screen
contains team information such as shots etc.:

The second screen tells you how well individual players played during the
match:

Finally after this you are shown a summary screen at which the man of the
match is shown:

The two other areas on this last screen are:

1.Pie chart - percentage of match possession

2.Lie charts - percentage of possession by team area

By looking at all of the statistics screens you should start to draw
conclusions about how well your selection did.Make notes (mental or on
paper)and use these notes to plan your next team, tactics etc.

What about matches my team is not involved in?
----------------------------------------------
You can either watch these matches,or simply have the computer generate the
result for you.In both cases the matches are played in exactly the same
way,but if you choose to [Generate] the matches the operation is faster
because no graphics are involved.

To watch a match you are not involved in,click on the match. The [Watch
Game] button becomes enabled.Click on [Watch Game] and then the match will
be played out on screen.

If you choose to generate the matches you are not involved in,click
[Generate].

How do I know how I'm doing?
----------------------------
Probably the best way is to select the [Tables] option from the menu. The
Group Tables will be displayed:

Your teams position will be highlighted.Obviously if you are bottom of your
group you are not doing too well!!!!!

What else can I do?
-------------------
This is interesting. What we'll do is list some of the major things that you
do.As the game goes along you will notice that there are some things that
are not in the manual. This is due to the time difference between writing
the manual and getting it printed. The following items are 100% IN the game:

                   a.Switch Languages ([File][Language])

World Cup Challenge is multi=lingual. If you are italian and want to play
the game in English (maybe to help your studies?),then simply switch
languages. It's surprising how much you can learn from this, and how much fun
it can be.

                   b.Change Player Details ([Options][Player Admin])

Use this to amend any players details. If you would like to put yourself in
a World Cup team, simply choose someone you do not want to play, and replace
them with yourself!!.You can live out your dreams with this
option.Alternatively you can use it to make sure the squads in the game are
as they really are at the tournament.

                   c.Change Jobs ([Options][Cheat][Change Job])

Er,self explanatory really. If you don't like the team you are managing, then
swap the job for one that you do fancy.

d.Play with a Historical or Fantasy Team ([Options]
                     [Fantasy])

Let's you replace a real team that is going to USA'94 with a team from the
past,or a fantasy team.For example,how well would the italian team of 1982
perform in USA'94? or the German team from 1990? or play with a team that
didn't make it to USA'94 (such as England). The choice is yours.

                   e.Magic Sponge ([Options][Cheat][Magic Sponge])

Use this if you have a lot of injuries or suspensions and you can't bear to
play with a weakened side. This is not really cheating - so don't feel too
bad about it!

                   f.Change Difficulty ([Options][Cheat][Difficulty])

Increase or decrease the difficulty of the game.Try increasing the
difficulty 3 or 4 times, and then taking a team like South Korea to the
final. You may find this quite a challenge!

In Case of Emergency
--------------------
If you find yourself unsuccessful, then do the following:

            a. Blame the players
            b. Blame the way the tournament is organised
            c. Blame defeats on injuries

Under NO circumstances admit that you are in any way responsible.

What next?
----------
    Play the game -
win the World Cup,bring home the trophy!.
    Go to it
 GOOD LUCK

NOT BAD TYPING FOR SOMEONE WITH NO FINGERS HEY? (ANY WAY HAVE YA SEEN MY
FINGERS ANYWHERE).
