		       Manual and Reference Guide Addenda

This file contains information about the Air Combat Classics games which
was not printed in the manual or reference guide.

INSTALLATION

The INSTALL.EXE program allows you to install all three games at once, or
each game individually. By default, the games will be installed in three
sub-directories, BH1942, BOB1940, and SWOTL, all contained in one top
level directory named CLASSICS. Thus, the three default installation
directories are \CLASSICS\BH1942, \CLASSICS\BOB1940, and \CLASSICS\SWOTL.
You may change these directory names if you like.

LOADING SWOTL

To play Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, switch to the SWOTL directory
using the DOS CD command. If you have installed SWOTL in the default
directory, you would enter the following command at the DOS prompt:

 CD \CLASSICS\SWOTL

Now simply type SW and hit return to start the game.

LOADING THEIR FINEST HOUR

To play Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain, switch to the BOB1940
directory using the DOS CD command. If you have installed BOB in the
default directory, you would enter the following command at the DOS prompt:

 CD \CLASSICS\BOB1940

Now type BOB and hit return to start the game. You can specify options
when you start BOB that tell the game what graphics mode to use, what
level of ground detail to display and what type of sound to make. You can
specify the graphics mode to use by entering a space and one of the
following letters after BOB:

V : Specifies VGA or MCGA graphics.
 E : Specifies EGA graphics.
 C : Specifies CGA graphics.
 T : Specifies Tandy 16-color graphics.

The level of ground detail can be specified by entering a space and a
number from 0-2 after the letter specifying the graphics mode:

 0 : Minimum ground detail.
 1 : Medium ground detail.
 2 : Maximum ground detail.

The type of sound can be specified by entering a space and either an A or
an I after the number specifying the level of ground detail:

 I : Internal Speaker.
A : AdLib Board (or compatibles).

LOADING BATTLEHAWKS

To play BattleHawks 1942, switch to the BH1942 directory using the DOS CD
command. If you have installed BattleHawks in the default directory, you
would enter the following command at the DOS prompt:

 CD \CLASSICS\BH1942

Now type BH and hit return to start the game. You can specify an option
when you start BattleHawks that tells the game what graphics mode to use.
You can specify the graphics mode to use by typing a space and one of the
following letters after BH:

V : Specifies VGA or MCGA graphics.
 E : Specifies EGA graphics.
 C : Specifies CGA graphics.
 T : Specifies Tandy 16-color graphics.

EXISTING VERSIONS OF THE GAMES

The versions of the games included in Air Combat Classics are the most
up-to-date versions available. Therefore, we recommend that you use the
Air Combat Classics versions of the games. If you have existing pilots,
film clips, etc., you may copy them from the existing game's directory to
the appropriate directory for the Air Combat Classics version. For example,
you could copy your old SWOTL pilots with the following commands:
 COPY \SWOTL\*.GER \CLASSICS\SWOTL
 COPY \SWOTL\*.USA \CLASSICS\SWOTL

EXISTING READ.ME FILES

For your convenience the read.me files for SWOTL and BOB have been
included here:

(SWOTL) which was not printed in the manual or reference guide.

MEMORY REQUIREMENTS

To run SWOTL on your IBM, Tandy, or compatible computer, you must have at
least 581,000 bytes of RAM available. If your computer is equipped with
expanded memory, you can run SWOTL with as little as 543,000 bytes of RAM
available. If you experience memory related difficulties in running SWOTL,
use the DOS program "CHKDSK" to see how much free RAM your computer has
available. You may need to disable one or more TSR programs (if you're
running any) to provide more available RAM for SWOTL to use.

HOT KEYS

Each menu choice in SWOTL has a letter (usually the first) highlighted in
red. These "hot keys" allow you to move rapidly through several menu
choices in succession. For example, if you were at the German main menu,
and you wanted to fly the first Flight School mission for the Focke-Wulf
190, you could simply type "F 2 1 S". This would access the Flight School
menu, choose the FW 190, choose the "Gunnery Practice" mission, and Start
the mission.

CAMPAIGN BATTLES

WINNING/LOSING CONDITIONS: There are 8 factors which make up the German
war economy in SWOTL:

	1. GERMAN FIGHTER PILOTS
	2. DEPLOYED GERMAN GRUPPEN
	3. AVIAT. FUEL
	4. JET FUEL
	5. GASOLINE IN STOCK
	6. MUNITIONS IN STOCK
	7. BALL BEARINGS IN STOCK
	8. TRANSPORTATION CONDITION

Of these 8 factors, only the first 4 have direct impact on the Luftwaffe.
The last 4 factors are general war industries, and so they affect only the
German ground forces. American Campaign Battles will have as a goal the
destruction of the war industries (Strategic Bombing), the Luftwaffe
(D-Day Air Superiority), or both (Final Victory). German Campaign Battles
will concern the defense of the same elements.

THE FRONT: The position of the Western Front will be indicated by the
location of captured installations. As the Allies push eastward across
Europe, German industrial and research sites, as well as Luftwaffe
airfields, will be captured by the Allies. Captured airfields may be
used by the Allies to launch attacks against German targets.

CUSTOM MISSION BRIEFINGS

There are various ways to create SWOTL Custom Mission briefings. When
creating your own mission briefing, you must save the file with a .TXT
extension with the file name identical to that of your mission. For
example: If you have created a custom mission called ATTACK.MIS, you
must name the mission briefing ATTACK.TXT. Also, the file must be
saved to the MIS directory.

One method is to use a word-processing program and save the file as .TXT
file in ASCII format to be easily accessed by the game. We'll use the
Microsoft Write program that comes with Windows as an example. From
Windows Program Manager open the Accessories group. Open the Write
program. Enter the text for your mission briefing. Keep the number of
characters to no more than 19 across so that they will fit in the
mission briefing screen. When you are finished select FILE, then SAVE AS.
In the lower left corner of the dialog is a list box that allows you
to select the format of the file. Select the .TXT text file format.
Once the file has been saved, exit Windows. From the DOS prompt, use the
COPY command to copy the briefing file into the SWOTL directory. For
example:
  COPY \WINDOWS\ATTACK.TXT \CLASSICS\SWOTL
Now start up SWOTL and enter into Custom Missions to view your briefing.

Another method of creating text is to use the DOS EDIT command (NOTE: early
versions of DOS do not have this command). First change to the SWOTL
directory using a CD command like the following:
  CD \CLASSICS\SWOTL
Now enter EDIT followed by the name of the briefing file you would like to
create. Following our example, the command to enter would be:
  EDIT ATTACK.TXT
Now enter the text for the briefing. When you have finished, select File,
then Exit. When you are asked if you would like to save the changes,
answer yes. Now start up SWOTL and enter into Custom Missions to view your
briefing.

A final method, for users who have earlier versions of DOS, is to use the
DOS COPY CON command. First change to the SWOTL directory using a CD
command like the following:
  CD \CLASSICS\SWOTL
Now type COPY CON followed by the name of the briefing file you would like
to create. Following our example, the command to enter would be:
  COPY CON ATTACK.TXT
Now enter the text for the briefing. You cannot change anything above the
current line you are working on, so be careful. When you have finished,
press the return key, then press F6, then press the return key. Now start
up SWOTL and enter into Custom Missions to view your briefing.

                          "READ.ME" File Information
                            Version 1.1 - 08/26/93

Thank you for purchasing Their Finest Hour. There are a few last minute
updates that are not documented in the Manual or the Reference Card. This
information along with corrections to the Manual are listed below. Please
read this information before playing Their Finest Hour.

AVAILABLE MEMORY

Their Finest Hour's performance and graphic detail are directly related
to the amount of free memory in your computer. It is highly recommended
that you boot your machine with a clean version of DOS that contains no
devices in your "config.sys" file and no "autoexec.bat" file. With the
exception of a mouse driver (if you are using a mouse), nothing should
be loaded into memory. The optimum amount of free memory for Their
    Finest Hour is 590K.

If you are using a hard disk, one way to tell if Their Finest Hour is
fully optimized is to check the gunner position screens on your German
Medium Bombers. If they match the screen shots on pages 143 and 147 of
your manual, Their Finest Hour will be fully optimized.

CHANGES TO THE MANUAL

Altimeter Description - (page 42, 46) The Manual inaccurately
describes the big hand of the dial as indicating hundreds of feet and
the little hand as indicating tens of feet. The big hand indicates
tens of feet and the little hand indicates hundreds of feet. For
example, if the digital display reads "21", the big hand is on the "4",
and the little hand is on the "8", your altitude is 21,840 feet, not
    21,480 feet.

Gun Indicator Lights - (page 43) The Double-Seat Fighter and Dive
Bomber each have a Gun Indicator Light located near the top of the
screen showing the status of the tail-gunner. See the color chart on
page 46 for a description of the color codes.

USING AN ADLIB CARD OR THE INTERNAL SPEAKER

If you have an AdLib music card installed in your computer, Their
Finest Hour will try to send all of your sound output to that card.
You may force the game to ignore your AdLib card by loading "bob.exe"
with an "I" extension. You may also force the game to use the AdLib
by loading it with an "A" extension. These extensions must follow the
graphic display option and the ground detail option.

          For example type;

                  BOB E 2 A

to load Their Finest Hour in EGA mode with maximum ground detail
	  and AdLib sounds.

                  A - AdLib sounds

                  I - Internal speaker

DELETING RECORDS

Their Finest Hour does not have an option to allow you to delete
existing records, i.e. pilots, top ten lists, saved replays, custom
missions, and campaigns. In order to delete these records, you will
have to use the DOS delete command. Each type of record is stored in
the BOB1940 directory on your hard disk or the root directory of your
floppy pilot data disk. Each type of data file is stored with the
    following DOS extensions.

	RAF Pilots............... *.RAF
	Bf 109 Pilots............ *.109
	Bf 110 Pilots............ *.110
	Ju 87 Stuka Pilots....... *.J87
	Bomber Crews............. *.BMB
	Top Ten Pilots........... *.TOP
	Custom Missions.......... *.FLT
	Saved Replays............ *.RPY
	Saved Campaign........... *.BOB

    For example;

If you have an RAF pilot named "Joe", the DOS file that contains
        his information is called;

                              JOE.RAF

        If you have a 109 pilot named "Hans", his DOS file will be called;

                              HANS.109
