Brumus Bear's Review of Upcoming Games

Once upon a time, in a mystical country of pirates and lamers long ago in a high speed, high tech land of megabytes and bauds, there lived a wonderful fellow named Claude Rains. He did a great job of providing a list of upcoming warez. What became of him we do not know, but he was last heard of in September of last year. Brumus Bear, who loved his lists and used them religiously, finally started his own list just to keep track since Claude's list apparently was no more. Since others seemed to miss it too, he has cleaned up his scribbles and put it out for users in this mystical never-never land. So ends this fable for now. Will Claude return? Will everyone say Brumus missed these dates by weeks when the distributors themselves have no idea when half the stuff is coming out? Will Strike Commander II come out before your grandchildren are born? Will Brumus quit this trivia stuff and get on with a list?

Meanwhile congrats are in order to UNT who seem to be the group of the month. On top of every release. Maybe I'll put this up on one of their boards and see if they will distribute it for me. In return for unlimited leech access of course. Well I put this up on a UNT board and didn't hear a peep. So I'll ul it locally for the other locals who have been squealing like me for such a list.

					Released in May

	TITLE DESCRIPTION RATING RELEASE DATE
Ambush at Sorinor In Seige we attacked castles 6/10 Rel.
here we attack them as they traipse through
		the woods. Strategy from Mindcraft

Legacy. I give up. Is this from Microprose too? 8/10 Rel
And it isn't Return of the Phantom or the Haunting? These guys must be out to take over the horror genre.
		Adventure from Microprose.

Coming to an outlet near you

Antimations Classic Package. Look out for this dog 0/10 Any day
Bunch of old games thrown together. Some lame
group with an ego problem will release it.
		Recycled from Readysoft.

Betrayal at Krondor	I dunno, looks like Darklands 6-/10 Any day
to me, which was a big dissapointment, and yet
Dynamix rarely disappoints. Maybe it will be
what Darklands was supposed to be. RPG from Dynamix.

Conquer for Windows. Yech. Dreary board game, 3/10 Any day
that does have nice Windows graphics, using the 1024 by 768 mode with 256 color resolution. Now if it just had a hint of decent gameplay.
		Strategy from Elpin Systems.

Darksun	SSI milked their old RPG engine for far 7/10 Any day
too long. This is the first with their new engine.
Graphics are finally vastly improved but unlikely to
be a cutting edge product. RPG from SSI.

Duke Nukem II. Is this out yet? Do I really care? 4/10 Any day
If you go for Apogee's typical low res graphic run
jump and shoot, here is one more of MANY for you.
		Arcade from Apogee.

Eagle Eye Mysteries. This really looks good for 9/10 Any day
the younger crowd. Educational but wrapped in
a fun package like Spellbound and that series.
		Educational 8-14 from Electronic Arts.

Flicks! Film Review Library. Siskel and Ebert 3/10 Any day
would probably give it two thumbs up. I give it
the middle finger up. Who needs a compendium of
movies and a trivia game with it.
		Database from Villa Crespo.

Innisbrook. The latest course for Links 386 Pro. 8/10 Any day
Unlike the last so-so course, this should be a terrific version of the nice Florida course.
Sports Sim Add on from Access

Lands of Lore. Oh boy oh boy. From the EOB 1 and 10/10 Any day
2 makers now at Virgin/Westwood. These guys also
did Kyrandia so I want it, I want it. Make that
		11/10.
		RPG from Virgin/Westwood

Might and Magic Darkside of Xeen. The tie in with 10/10 Any day
Clouds of Xeen. A great series that is staying up
		to date.
		RPG/New World Computing

Quarterpole. Who is in charge of marketing here? 3/10 Any day
A horse racing simulation? Who knows, has nice
graphics and may actually be a dark horse, so
to speak, but don't bet on it.
		Racing Sim from Electronic Arts.

Rags to Riches. A supposedly humorous succeed in 5/10 Any day
business simulation. Usually this type of thing
does not come off to well.
		Strategy from Interplay.

Red Sky at Morning. Oh boy oh boy a military sim 1/10 Any day
from a bunch of Canadians who just discovered graphics. Military Strategy from Simulations Canada.

Return of the Phantom. Now this looks good. They 9/10 Any day
took the Rex Nebular engine and wrapped a
phantom of the opera story on it. Should be
like an improved Veil of Darkness. Love most any Microprose game, so could be fabulous.
		Horror Adventure from Microprose.

Rules of Engagement 2. Another complex space 6/10 Any day
strategy game. If it is more complex than
Star Control II, forget it for me and it looks
		that way. Next.
		Space Strategy from Impressions/Omnitrend

Space Hulk. Never heard of it but CGR went nuts 9/10 Any day
over it. However, could be rules of engagement
1.75, ie, too complex for me. Average CGR's
10 with my 8 for a nine average.
		Space Strategy.

War in the Gulf. I don't follow this military 4/10 Who cares?
strategy stuff. I just put it in here to
		fill extra space.
		Military Strategy from Readysoft.

When Two Worlds War. A space strategy simulation 7/10 Any day
where you set up your ships to conquer randomly generated planets. Designed as a two player game supposedly, which would be a neat change.
		Space Strategy Sim from Impulse/Impressions.

A320 Airbus. Should be an off the wall flight 7/10 June
simulation of the Airbus, developed in conjunction with Lufthansa and Airbus.

Aces over Europe. Dynamix does for Europe what 8/10 June
what they did for the Pacific in Aces of the Pacific.
		Flight sim from Dynamix.

Adi Junior An educational game for the young 5/10 May
kiddies. I see nothing to distinguish from many
		of the same type.

Blue Force. Jim Walls of PQuest fame left Sierra 9/10 Summer
and is now doing his thing with a new company. You play cop Ryan, finding clues to your old man's murder of ten years ago.
		Adventure from Tsunami.

Daemonsgate: Dorovan's Key. A very good looking RPG 8/10 May
that has been overdue for a while.
		RPG from Gametek.

Haunting. A horror adventure from Microprose. They 9/10 May
advertised this, then stopped and now advertise
Return of the Phantom. Has this been reworked and
retitled or could we actually be getting two horror
sims. I vote for the two.
		Horror adventure from Microprose.

Hero by Night. A nice looking comic book 7/10 2Q93
adventure that has been in development
		but has disappeared.
		Adventure by MECC.

Take a Break Pinball. Heavily pushed by Dynamix 8/10 2Q93
until Trisan pinball came out and unheard of
since. I assume they are improving it and will
		still issue it.
		Pinball sim from Dynamix.

Archon Ultra. An update of the classic Archon. 6/10 July
		Strategy from SSI.

Belfrey. Another Links 386 Pro course, not as good as 7/10 Summer
as Innisbrook but better than Branff.
Sports Sim Add on from Access

Carriers at War - Japan Sweeps South. Who buys all 4/10 July
this stuff? Add on of 6 scenarios, Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, etc.
		Military Sim add on disk.

Champions. Due out for a while, this had nice mag 7/10 June
reviews but apparently needed some more work. Sort
of XMen arcade comes to your PC.
		Arcade from Konami.

Coaster. After Stunt Island, this sounds less exciting 6/10 Summer
A simulation of building and riding roller coasters,
this is the kind of great concept that often sounds
		better than it turns out.
		Simulation from Disney.

Clash of Steel. WWII military sim in Europe. Hate em 3/10 June
		Military simulation from SSI.

Dog Eat Dog. A business simulation from Disney, 4/10 June
that is long over due. Like someone cares.
		Business sim from Disney.

DOOM. The makers of Wolfenstein 3-D and Spear of 8/10 Summer
Destiny take their engine to science fiction.
Outside of better graphics, should be more
shoot-em up and find the treasures, no great
		mind puzzler.
		Arcade from Id Software.

Front Page Sports: Baseball. Yep the baseball version 5/10 Summer
		of FPS:Football. I don't think so.
		Sports Sim from Dynamix.

Further Adventures of Willie Beamish. Previously due 9/10 Summer
out in January, little has been heard of this
follow up to the smash hit Willie Beamish.
		Adventure from Dynamix.

Gary Rigsby's War in Russia. Military WWII sim in 3/10 August
		Russia. Hate em.

		all based on Pohl's novels.
		Strategy Adventure from Legend Entertainment.

High Command. A military sim of the period from 3/10 June
1939 to 1945, where you are in charge of all military, economic and political resources. Hilary Clinton's dream come true.
		Military Sim from Three- Sixty.

Man of War. Another Military Sim. Do these things 2/10 Summer
like breed or something? Anyways, this is like old time ships, frigates and the like.
		Military Strategy from Simulations Canada.

Microleague Boxing. Oh I am so excited. Another 2/10 Summer
boxing simulation. Who needs a Super NES when you
can get the same crap on your pc?
		Sports Sim by Microleague Sports.

NCAA Bassketball II. Boy have these all sucked. 2/10 Summer
With Jordan In Flight out now, I don't know if
they will have the guts to release this dog. On
second thought, of course they will.
		Sports Sim from Bethesda Softworks.

Phantom This firm puts out good games, but their 8/10 Summer
productts for the PC tend to be pretty few and far
between. Probably arcade like, but little word on this one.
		Arcade by Psygnosis

Police Quest 4. Daryl Gates does Sierra. Walls is 9/10 Summer
gone, but Sierra will still get it done right.
Should me more of the same good police adventure.
		Adventure from Sierra.

Privateer. I used to think this was Wing Commander III 6/10 Summer
With X Wing, Strike Commander and tthe like out I dunno
if I care what it is. Just release it.
Flight Sim/Strategy from Origin (now EA)

Railroad Tycoon. Not a type or a time warp. Microprose 9/10 Summer
is gonna update the old classic, and I do mean classic, only Sim City tops this baby. Now with hig res 16 colr VGA graphics and three new maps.
		Strategy Simulation from Microprose.

Seal Team. Vietnam military sim. At least this one 5/10 Summer
has a point of view from the squad, has seven different missions and arcade like action combat. But still just another military sim.
		Military sim from Electronic Arts.

Seven Cities of Gold. Maybe it is a time warp. 7/10 Summer
Another lesser classic is updated to 256 color graphicss. You sail around as Columbus, explore, settle, etc.
		Strategy Simulation from Electronic Arts.

Sim Farm. Yep the people at Maxis are simulating 5/10 Summer
everything except sex. Topics are really
		slipping though.
		Simulation from Maxis.

Star Trek: The Next Generation. If they just manage 10/10 July
what they did with the last Star Trek game, I
and Boba Fet will be in heaven.
		Adventure from Spectrum Holobyte.

Syndicate. In this you attempt world domination by 9/10 June
sending agents into various cities to create havoc, liberate the citizens and the like. From Bullfrog, the same people who did Populous and Powermonger.
		Strategy Simulation from Electronic Arts.

Warlords II. Update of the game Warlords. 6/10 Summer
		Military sim by SSG.

Amazon Trail. Amazon jungle adventure with photos 8/10 Late Summer
and sound tracks from the jungle in it.

		RPG from SSI.

Its Green and its Pissed. More Apogee run jump and 6/10 Late Summer
shoot stuff, but with a more interesting title.
		Arcade from Apogee.

Links Course Designer I wouldn't hold my breath on 10/10 Fall
on this one. One course is showing every two months and selling well. Why let everyone make for free what you are selling? Schedule on this should slip and slip.
		Sports Sim from Access.

Space Inc. A military sim in space. hate em. 1/10 Fall
		Military Sim from R.A.W.

Operation Daybreak. Is this a joke. Or is it the 3/10 October
		Deadlock Conspiracy repackaged? Previously
titled Breakfast of Champions and Ambush, I call
it hogwash till I get more info.
		Wishful thinking from Sir-Tech.

Dune III. Yep, they are gonna do it. Why not when 10/10 1Q94
		the previous two were fantastic.
		Unknown type from Virgin.

Scary Tales. This was supposedly the biggie from 10/10 1Q94
Sierra, with Robin making this the next super smash.
Latest Interaction doesn't even mention it in passing.
		Horror Adventure from Sierra.

Jack Nicklaus Power Challenge Golf. Right. It had 3/10 Unknown
better be awesome to unseat Links 386 Pro. I
doubt it. A series of sports stuff.
		Sports Sim from Accolade.

Bret Hull Hockey. Well it shouldn't be hard to make 5/10 Unknown
		the best hockey sim.
		Sports Sim from Accolade.

Mike Ditka Football. personally, I give up on 3/10 Unknown
football simulations, maybe on CD Rom one
		might actually be playable.
		Sports Sim from Accolade.

Pele Soccer. Undoubtably the biggest dog of this 2/10 Unknown
group, soccer sims have been a bad joke to date.

Well this is the first update......and since the first one didn't get shipped around, it will be the first to most everyone. If Claude returns the job is still his. I'll try to put this out every third week or so. If you have any complaints, post them to Lance Romance on the nets. If you really like the list, send me lots of money. If you think I may have missed a release date by a few days, you have a potential future as an idiot weather forecaster. Just keep shampooing and setting your hair twice a day.

I type this up in WP5.1. I also produce a file in generic form for the neaderthals out there. Till about three weeks from today this is Brumus Bear saying "Be warez wise".
