HANDLING PROBLEMS

As you work through the exercises in Inside AutoCAD Release 13
for Windows, you may experience some problems. These problems
can occur for any number of reasons, from input errors to
hardware failures. If you have trouble performing any step
described in this book, take the following actions:

 * Try again. Double-check the steps you performed in the
previous exercise(s), as well as earlier steps in the
     current exercise.

 * Check the settings of any AutoCAD system variables
that were modified in any previous exercise sequences.
(See the system variables table in Appendix F for a
     listing of all system variables.)

 * Check the AutoCAD Release 13 printed or on-line
     documentation or on-line help system.

If none of the previous suggestions help, contact New Riders
Publishing only if the problem relates to a specific exercise,
instruction, or error in the book. If you need help with general
questions on AutoCAD Release 13, contact Autodesk or your
AutoCAD dealer.

UPDATES AND CORRECTIONS

As of this printing, Autodesk has released the c1 Maintenance
Patch for Release 13. Contact your dealer for information.

If you are installing the IAW Disk for the first time, most of
the following may mean little to you at this time. We suggest
you note the headings of the following items (you could print
them, or write them inside the book's cover) to remind yourself
of them. Then, when you encounter these topics in the book, use
the Book Updates icon in the Inside AutoCAD R13 for Windows
program group to reread this file.

Chapter 1 & 5 - Default Prototype Drawing:

The standard default ACAD.DWG prototype drawing in your
\ACADR13\COMMOM\SUPPORT directory may be modified. To ensure a
standardized prototype drawing for the book, a copy of ACAD.DWG
is installed in the IAW\DWGS directory. As long as you make sure
that the ACAD.DWG prototype is specified (without a path) in the
Create New Drawing dialog box (the NEW command), you can be sure
your prototype is correct for the book.

Chapters 13 & 19 - Text and Support Path Warning:

AutoCAD stores references to other files, such as xref and text
font files, in the drawing file. When you use a file dialog box
to specify a file, the full path is stored in the file name. If
the drawing is later loaded on a system with a different drive
letter or directory structure, this can cause problems. In some
cases, AutoCAD then cannot find the referenced file, even if it
is on the default support file search path. If AutoCAD can't
find a text font file, and an alternate font substitution is
set, the alternate font file will be substituted for display and
plotting without warning. (The text style will still reference
the original font file, even if it can't be found). This can
cause strange text appearance and alignment in the drawing. The
font substitution is specified by the FONTALT system variable,
which is set to the TXT font by default. We highly recommend
that you set it to no substitution. That will cause AutoCAD to
prompt you when it can't find a font file. To set FONTALT to no
substitution, enter FONTALT at the AutoCAD Command: prompt, then
enter a period at the New value for FONTALT, or . for none
<"txt">: prompt. To prevent path problems, do NOT use file
dialog boxes to specify xref or font files which are on the
search path. Instead, choose the Type It button in the dialog
box, then enter the file name without path at the prompt that
appears, and AutoCAD will find the file and store its name
without the path.

Chapter 24 - Datum Identifying Symbol:

The c1 Maintenance causes an extra box to be added above a
datum identifying symbol, such as [-A-], created by the
TOLERANCE command. As a work-around, you can enter the
datum identifier, such as -A-, in the Tolerance 1 Value
edit box of the Geometric Tolerance dialog box, leaving all
other values and symbols blank.

Chapters 22, 23 - Stacked Fraction Height:

The c1 Maintenance Patch adds control of the height of stacked
fractions in dimensions. This applies to Architectural or
Fractional dimension units. The height is controlled by the
DIMTFAC dimension variable. To set this in the Dimension Styles
dialog box, choose Annotation, to open the Annotation dialog
box. In the Tolerance section of the Annotation dialog box,
select any Method (to make the Height edit box active), then
enter the height in the Height edit box, then set the Method
back to None, and choose OK.

Appendix A - AutoCAD Environment Settings:

AutoCAD environment settings, such as default paths, are stored
in the ACAD.INI file. They can also be set by creating an
optional ACADENV.INI file in the configuration directory.
Settings in the ACADENV.INI file override values specified by
the ACAD.INI file or by DOS environment variables. The
ACADENV.INI format is the same as the ACAD.INI format.

Appendix B - GDI Resources and Lockups:

One cause of Release 13 "locking up" or "crashing" is lack of
GDI Resources in Windows. This can be due to running too many
other programs along with AutoCAD. More memory will not help.
Warning symptoms are any weird interface behavior, such as odd
colored icons or failure of Windows to repaint portions of the
screen. If these symptoms occur, immediately close AutoCAD, then
Windows, to avoid potential damage to open files or the AutoCAD
directories. Then restart Windows and try to use fewer
simultaneous applications. GDI resources are one part of
Windows system resources. You can check Windows system resources
by choosing Help, then About Program Manager in the Windows
Program Manager. If the System Resources percentage shown is
less than 10-13%, you are in the danger zone.

        --------------------------------------------

There are no other updates or known corrections to the book
Inside AutoCAD Release 13 at this time. If you find any errors
in the book, please let us know what they are so we can fix them
in the future.
