Page Magic 2 for Windows README - June 1995
===============================================

To install and run Page Magic 2 your computer setup must meet
certain requirements. Refer to Page 2 of the Page Magic 2 Quick
Start Guide for further details. When you are sure that your
computer setup meets these requirements, you can install
Page Magic by following the steps below:

1. Run Windows and maximize the Program Manager.

2. Insert the Page Magic Program Disk 1 into your floppy disk
	drive.

3. Select Run from the File menu of Program Manager. The Run
	dialog is displayed.

4. Enter A:\INSTALL in the Command Line box and click on OK.

	If your floppy disk drive is represented by a letter other
	than A:, substitute it accordingly in the command above.

5. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the
	installation. A dialog will be displayed for you to
	choose the options that you want to install. An option
	is selected when the adjacent box is checked.

Periodically during the installation, you will be prompted to
change the program disk in the floppy disk drive. If you have not
chosen to install all the options, you may not need each disk.

At the end of the installation, you are asked to select or create
a program group where you would like to place the Page Magic
program icons.

Are you upgrading?
==================

Read this section if you are upgrading from an earlier version of
Page Magic.

When you install Page Magic 2 it will not overwrite your existing
copy of Page Magic. If you decide to delete your old copy of
Page Magic, make sure that you don't delete any documents and
templates that you want to keep. (These files may be located in
your old Page Magic directory. If you delete this directory
without first moving your files to another location, you will
lose your files.)

We suggest that you move these files from your old \PGMAGIC
directory to the \NEBS\PGMAGIC directory that is created when you
install Page Magic 2. To move the files, follow the steps below:

1. Start the Windows File Manager by double-clicking the File
	Manager program icon in the Windows Main program group.

2. Open your old \PGMAGIC directory and select the files you
	want to move.

3. Drag the files to your new \NEBS\PGMAGIC directory and drop
	them over the subdirectory into which you want to store
	them.

You can then go ahead and delete your old \PGMAGIC directory;
your documents and templates are safely stored for future use
with your new version of Page Magic.

NOTE: For full details of moving files using the Windows File
Manager, refer to your Microsoft Windows User's guide.

Where to begin
==============

For an introduction to Page Magic we suggest that you work
through the tutorials provided in the Page Magic 2 Guide. The
online Help provides detailed information on every feature in
Page Magic - it is there to help you get the most out of
Page Magic - simply press F1.

Using Page Magic templates
==========================

The Page Magic templates have been designed with default
paragraph styles that work well with the frame size. However,
occasionally you may try to add more text than was intended
for the default frame and it may not fit. If you do not want
to autoflow the text into additional pages (for a tag template,
for example), try the following:

- Change the paragraph style; a heading style may be defaulting
  for each line in the frame and body text may be more appropriate.

- Reduce the font size to accommodate your text.

- Enlarge the frame.

Using the Brochure PagePilot
============================

When creating a brochure from a PagePilot, if you try to add more
text than is intended for the frame, or if you have selected too
large a font size, your text may not fit. If when you view the
document created from the PagePilot, you do not see all of your
text, try the following:

- Enlarge the frame, or

- Reduce the font size of your text.

Changing fonts
==============

If you change fonts within a paragraph (for example, if you insert
special characters like symbols) through KeyPad or the font drop-down
list, the new font remains in effect until you change back to the
paragraph style's default font. To change back to the original font,
simply choose the paragraph style's default font from the font drop-down
list and finish typing the paragraph. Do NOT click; Page Magic remembers
where your pointer is and clicking will revert the font back to the prior
font change.

Printing problems
=================

If you attempt to print a Page Magic document and get the message
"You do not have a default printer selected; use Windows Control Panel
to select one," perform the following procedure:

1. Switch to your Program Manager

2. Select Control Panel in your Main program group

3. Select Printers, and reset your default printer

4. Switch back to Page Magic and print your document.

UMC video drivers
=================

Read this section if you are using a UMC video driver.

Page Magic 2 may encounter problems when being used with
a UMC video driver. In particular, some UMC video drivers cause
PowerTable to GPF (General Protection Fault) when executed.

If you encounter any problems, try the following workarounds:

- Set your Windows setup to use the standard Windows VGA display.

- Set your Windows setup to use UMC display at a different
  resolution.

- Purchase the latest UMC driver.

- Purchase a different video driver.

Page Magic 2 and Design Magic
=============================

Read this section if you use both Page Magic 2 and
Design Magic 2.02.

(Design Magic is a separate drawing and illustration application
for Windows developed for NEBS by GST Technology Ltd.
For further information, contact NEBS
in the USA at: (from 8 AM to 8 PM)
	Telephone: (800) 882-5254
	Fax: (800) 234-4324
in Canada at: (from 8 AM to 7 PM EST)
	Telephone: (800) 461-7572
	Fax: (800) 461-3325

When you install Page Magic 2, the version of PANTONE that is
installed is more recent than that supplied with Design Magic.
If you run Page Magic and Design Magic together the different
PANTONE versions may conflict.

If you install Page Magic 2 after you install Design Magic you
will not have a problem. However, if you install Design Magic
after you install Page Magic 2 you must run the Page Magic 2
installation again.

NOTE: This is only applicable to Design Magic 2.02; later versions
of Design Magic will use the new version of PANTONE.

Page Magic 2 and Design Magic OLE2 handler
=========================================

If you have Design Magic 2 or later installed, when you install
Page Magic 2 an OLE2 handler will be installed into your
Design Magic directory. This OLE2 handler will speed up the
display of Design Magic objects that you link or embed into other
OLE applications.

If you install Design Magic after you install Page Magic 2 you
must run the Page Magic 2 installation again to install the OLE2
handler.

NOTE: This is only applicable to Design Magic 2.02; later
versions of Design Magic will install their own OLE2 handler.

Photo CD Browser and SMARTDRV 5.0
=================================

Read this section if you use the Photo CD Browser with
SMARTDRV 5.0.

If you have SMARTDRV 5.0 installed on your PC, you may receive
"Not Ready" errors when you use the Photo CD Browser. (SMARTDRV
5.0 is supplied with MS-DOS 6.2 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11;
the Photo CD Browser is a utility supplied with Page Magic and
Design Magic.)

You can overcome this problem by editing the SMARTDRV command
line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file; simply follow the steps below:

1. Start the Windows File Manager by double-clicking the File
	Manager program icon in the Windows Main program group.

2. Select Run from the File menu. The Run dialog is displayed.

3. Enter SYSEDIT in the Command Line box, then click on OK to
	start the System Configuration Editor.

4. Click in the AUTOEXEC.BAT window to make it the active
	window, then look for the command line containing SMARTDRV.

5. Edit this command line to read: C:\DOS\SMARTDRV /X /E:2048

6. Select Save from the File menu to save your changes to the
	AUTOEXEC.BAT.

7. Select Exit from the File menu to close the System
	Configuration Editor, then exit Windows and restart your
	computer.

When you restart your computer and reload the Photo CD Browser,
you will no longer receive the "Not Ready" error message.
