Professional Version
--------------------

You have purchased the Professional Version of PartitionMagic which
comes with a non-machine-specific license. This license may be used on
an unlimited number of PCs, one at a time.

Since it is typical to run PartitionMagic direct from diskette, please
be sure to make backup copies of the original diskettes, run
PartitionMagic from the backup diskettes, and keep the originals in a
safe location.

Disk sets: OS/2 and Windows 95
------------------------------

The Professional Version of PartitionMagic comes with two sets of
diskettes and manuals: one set for OS/2 and DOS and one set for
Windows 95 and DOS. Use the OS/2 set on any machine with OS/2
installed.

While no changes are allowed to the partition PartitionMagic is
installed to, it is sometimes desirable to install PartitionMagic to a
hard disk. Installation instructions for each set of diskettes are
given in the respective manual. (Basically, run SETUP from the first
diskette of the set.) Do not install both sets to the same directory;
some files are named the same.

The functionallity of the two sets is nearly identical. The OS/2 set
is better suited for machines containing OS/2. For the OS/2 and DOS
set:

  1. OS/2's extended attributes are checked when a file system is
      checked.
  2. Conversion from FAT to HPFS is allowed.
  3. The command name "PQMAGIC" is an OS/2 executable.
  4. The DOS executable, "PQMAGICD," uses an OS/2-like user interface.
  5. "PQMAGICT" is used when booting OS/2 from floppy.
  6. "IOTEST" is used to test the integrity of disk I/O under OS/2.

For the Windows 95 and DOS set:

  1. PartitionMagic ignores errors in extended attributes (EAs). If a
computer once had OS/2, but does not currently have it, it is
common for FAT paritions to contain EA errors. These errors are
ignored by the versions of PartitionMagic on the DOS set of
      diskettes.
  2. The command name "PQMAGIC" is a 32-bit DOS executable and uses a
      Windows 95-like user interface.
  3. The command name "PQMAGICT" starts a text-only, DOS executable
suitable for use with software to enable computer use by the
      disabled.

The remainder of this file contains information specific to either the
OS/2 or Windows 95 version, depending on which diskette set you are
viewing:

1. License Types
----------------

The Personal Version of PartitionMagic features a machine-specific license.
The Personal License allows installation or configuration on two and only two
particular machines. See the *User Guide* for the license.

The Professional Version of PartitionMagic comes with a non-machine-specific
license. This license may be used on an unlimited number of PCs, one at a
time. The Professional License includes technical support and maintenance
updates for one year.

The Enterprise Version is for organizations requiring remote configuration
capabilities at multiple sites. This license provides for remote execution
which runs unattended through use of a script file. The Enterprise License
allows simultaneous use and can upgrade hundreds of users quickly and saves
time and travel expense. For information on the Enterprise Version of
PartitionMagic, contact PowerQuest Corporate Sales at (801) 226-8977.

2. Warnings
-----------

- Don't forget to backup your hard drive before using PartitionMagic. While
PartitionMagic has been thoroughly tested and is quite safe, power failure,
operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your data at risk. No
software program, including PartitionMagic, is perfect. Before using any
utility that makes such extensive changes to your hard drive, you should
backup your data.

- If you run PartitionMagic from DOS: Turn off 3rd party disk caches.
Deactivate or unload any TSR programs that access or modify the partitions
being changed. Exit multitasking software such as Windows 3.1 before starting
PartitionMagic. Do not run PartitionMagic from a compressed drive.

- With Windows 95, run PartitionMagic using MS-DOS Mode.

- Sometimes using PartitionMagic confuses Windows NT in that Windows NT
changes drive letter assignments. Use Disk Administrator to change the drive
letters back to the values you prefer.

3. Notes
--------

- When starting Windows 3.1, it is normal to get an error message stating that
the swap file is corrupt. Windows 3.1 is designed knowing that disk utilities
may move the clusters of the swap file. When a move is detected, the error
message is given. To fix the swap file, delete the swap file and create it
again. Click on the 386 Enhanced icon in Control Panel, then on the Virtual
Memory button.

- PartitionMagic uses the same DOS extender as DOOM. If DOOM will not run on
your computer, chances are that PartitionMagic will not run either.

- Under DOS, PartitionMagic can not read cylinders that DOS can not see. If
you have cylinders beyond 1023 that the DOS version of FDISK can't see,
PartitionMagic won't see them either. If some solution is in place on your
computer allowing the entire drive to be accessible, PartitionMagic will have
no problems accessing the entire drive.

If part of the drive is unaccessible to DOS and contains partitions or parts
of partitions, only the partitions totally accessible to PartitionMagic are
enabled for modifying, even though they may be displayed. If part of the
extended partition is inaccessible, no operations are permitted anywhere
within it. OS/2 users may use the OS/2 Version of PartitionMagic to access
the entire drive.

4. Use Windows 95's MS-DOS Mode
-------------------------------

PowerQuest has found that FDISK-like programs, including PartitionMagic and
Microsoft's own FDISK, are unsafe when run from Windows 95's windowed mode.
This is because Windows 95 does not have a way for FDISK to gracefully reboot
Windows while maintaining locks on drives that have changed.

The following scenario illustrates the data-loss that can result because of
this limitation in Windows 95.

1. Assume a drive containing an extended partition containing more than one
logical drive. The first logical, D:, contains 2 megabytes. The second
logical, E:, contains any number of megabytes.

2. Run FDISK in an MS-DOS Prompt Window. Delete D: and in its place create a
new D: of 1 megabyte, and a another partition with the remaining space
(1 megabyte).

3. Quit FDISK. Unlike the DOS version of FDISK, the Windows 95 version of
FDISK is unable to reboot the drive and gives a message that does nothing to
alert you to the current danger.

4. Copy a large file that will fill the D: partition. It may seem strange
that 2 MB can fit on a 1 MB partition, unless you're aware that the FDISK
changes will not take effect until rebooting. However, new partition tables
are not always protected from accidental corruption and copying the 2 MB file
into 1 MB of space has just overwritten the logical drive chain. All data on
all logical partitions has now been lost.

5. Reboot the computer. While partitions D: and E: should be new, not-yet-
formatted partitions, D: is corrupt and E: and F: are gone.

If there had been additional logical partitions, EVERY ONE would now be lost.
Furthermore, the partition tables are also corrupt, since the logical chain
points to a sector that does not contain a valid partition table. This could
possibly cause some operating systems to fail to boot.

To prevent this kind of data destruction, we have decided to require that you
run PartitionMagic in MS-DOS Mode in order to make changes to the drive. In
this mode, PartitionMagic can safely reboot the computer when exiting
PartitionMagic if that is necessary to protect your data.

5. Updates
----------

Minor updates to PartitionMagic are provided periodically. They are available
from our BBS (801-226-5608), via anonymous ftp (ftp.powerquest.com),
our web site (www.powerquest.com), and CompuServe (OS2AVENDOR). Check
regularly to assure you have the latest bug fixes and minor improvements.
