Before installing this release of Publisher, UNINSTALL any previous beta
release of Publisher on your machine. If you do not uninstall the previous
Publisher beta, you may not be able to use Microsoft shared components
(listed in section below) in Publisher or in other applications.

To run uninstall on Windows 95:
   1. Click the Start menu (usually on the bottom left of the screen)
   2.  Click Settings
   3.  Click Control Panel
   4.  Click Add\Remove Programs
   5.  Double-click on "Microsoft Publisher"
   6. Choose "Remove All" in any dialogs that appear
   7. Reboot the machine after completing uninstall.

To run uninstall on WindowsNT 3.51:
   1.  Launch the File Manager
   2. Switch to the Publisher directory (\mspub or \Microsoft Publisher)
   3. Switch to the setup directory
   4.  Double-click on setup.exe
   5. Choose "Remove All" in any dialogs that appear

If you install this new release of Publisher on top of an older beta release,
and you find that shared components no longer work, do the following:
   1. Launch the Explorer or File Manager
   2. If a directory called "Program Files" exists, open it
   3. If a directory called "Microsoft Shared" exists, delete it
   4.  Reboot the machine
   5.  Rerun Publisher setup

Microsoft shared components should be located in subdirectories of
\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared on Windows 95, and in
subdirectories of \<Windows>\MSAPPS on Windows NT. Note that if you are a
participant in beta programs for other Microsoft products, you may find that
Microsoft shared components are no longer available after installing this
release of Publisher.

SECTION 1: Brief Questions & Answers
=====================================

HOW DO I REPORT BUGS?
=====================
Please see the Publisher Beta Handbook for instructions on reporting bugs to
Microsoft. This handbook details what you should do to report bugs to the
Publisher Beta Team and will tell you which tools to use for reporting bugs.

CAN I TEST ON WINDOWS NT?
=========================
This release of Publisher runs only on Windows95 (build 480 or higher) and
on NT 3.51 (build 1057 or higher). Publisher does not run on Win32s.

If the operating system is incompatible with this release of Publisher, you
will see the following error message when you launch Publisher:

"Microsoft Publisher can only run on Windows NT 3.51 or higher, or Windows 95
or higher. Publisher cannot run on Win32s."

SHARED COMPONENTS USED BY OTHER MICROSOFT PRODUCTS
==================================================
Publisher installs the following components which are shared with other
Microsoft applications:
- ClipArt Gallery
- WordArt
- Text Converters
- Spell Checker
- Graphics Filters
- MSInfo
- MediaView
- MSVC runtimes (MSVCRT20.DLL, MFCANS32.DLL, CTL3D32.DLL)
- PicStore (PICSTORE.DLL)
- Microsoft Draw
- Visual Basic 3.0 runtime (VBRUN300.DLL)
- Visual Basic Custom Controls (THREED.VBX, SPIN.VBX)

If you are participating in a preview program for another Microsoft
application, installing Publisher may update these components and possibly
change the way these other applications operate. Publisher's setup program
updates the files and registry for these components.

HOW DO I REMOVE PUBLISHER FROM MY MACHINE?
==========================================
See the section above called "Run Uninstall First" for instructions.

See Section 2, "SETUP: Known Issues," for a list of discrepancies with
Publisher's uninstall program.

===============================
SECTION 2 : SETUP: Known Issues
===============================

ITEM 1-A directory called ~MSSETUP.T will remain under your root directory
after running setup.

ITEM 2-Network, admin, workstation and CD installs are not yet supported.

ITEM 3-If there is no available disk space on your machine, Setup typically
fails.

ITEM 4-During uninstall, you will be offered a choice whether to keep or
remove shared components. Regardless of your choice, if Publisher is
the only application using the shared component, the component will be
removed.

ITEM 5-After uninstall, system files installed by Publisher are not removed.
These include files such as MSVCRT20.DLL, MVUT14N.DLL, PICSTORE.DLL, and
PUB3BRSH.ANI.

ITEM 6-After uninstall, some registry keys are left behind. These include
user preferences written by Publisher during operation, and will not affect
the operation of other applications.

ITEM 7-After uninstall, some Publisher directories and files are left behind.
These include the Publisher main directory (typically \mspub), and the Setup
directory.

ITEM 8-If you are a participant in the Office 95 Preview Program, and you
have difficulties importing Windows Metafiles, do the following:
   1. Open the Explorer or File Manager
   2. On Windows 95, switch to:
          \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry
       On WindowsNT, switch to:
          \<Windows directory>\MSAPPS\Artgalry
   3.  On Windows95, drag WMFIMP32.FLT to:
          \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt
       On WindowsNT, drag WMFIMP32.FLT to:
          \<Windows directory>\MSAPPS\Grphflt
If this does not solve the problem, please file a bug report.

SECTION 3: PRINTING: Known Issues
====================================

ITEM 1-Printing of some object fill patterns to PostScript printers can take
a long time.

ITEM 2-Publisher's PostScript Drivers are not installed on WindowsNT by
Publisher Setup. To install these printers, you may need your WindowsNT
program disks. Follow these steps to install the printer drivers on NT:
   1. You must have a printer already installed on your system. If you have
       no printers installed, install a printer of your choice.
   2. After you have installed a printer, run the Print Manager.
   3.  Choose Printer, Create Printer
   4. Click the down-arrow on the "Driver" box
   5. Scroll to the bottom of the list, and choose "Other..."
   6. In the Install Driver dialog box, enter the Short Filename path
       to Publisher. This is probably c:\Micros~1 or c:\mspub.
   7. In the Select Driver dialog box, select the driver you want to
       install. (You can install both by repeating these instructions.)
   8. Enter the path to your WindowsNT disks or to your network install
       location, if prompted.
   9. After system files are copied, "MS Publisher...Printer" should be
       shown in the "Driver" box. Scroll and select "MS Publisher...Printer"
       if it is not already selected.
   10. Choose a name for the printer, and click OK for the dialogs that
       follow.

ITEM 3-On NT, objects with gradient fills will not print correctly on
PostScript printers when the object is only partially on the page.

ITEM 4-Publications with very fine hairline details may not print correctly
on high resolution (such as 1200 dpi) printers. Some BorderArts have
hairlines that exhibit this problem.

ITEM 5-If you choose Outside Print Setup, and run through the steps, you will
not be warned if Publisher's PostScript drivers are not available.

================================================
SECTION 4: TEXT IMPORT & INTEROP: Known Issues
================================================

ITEM 1-If you create a Publisher file with bullets in it, save it as RTF and
then open it in WordPerfect, WP immediately shuts down.

ITEM 2-Format painting from one table to another, when the source table has
complicated patterns or formatting, can cause a GPF.

ITEM 3-When importing a file from another application, multiple tables may
end up on new, separate Publisher pages.

ITEM 4-Pasting objects from Excel into Publisher may result in shifting of
text in the object, or may result in problems with font display.

=============================
SECTION 5: HELP: Known Issues
=============================

ITEM 1-This release of Publisher does not launch an Introduction on first
launch of the product.

ITEM 2-The Technical Support Help Topic, "Getting information about technical
support" has incorrect steps for accessing this information. The Technical
Support Help information is not available in this release of Publisher.

ITEM 3-Please report bugs when on-screen Help gives incorrect instructions.

ITEM 4-The About dialog box does not show user information.

ITEM 5-On Windows 95, Publisher's release notes are not available from the
Start menu, as per the Companion book. On WindowsNT, the Program Group icon
for Publisher Release Information does not point to the correct file (this
file). The release notes can be found in the Setup subdirectory of the
Publisher directory.

ITEM 6-The Quick Demo for the Design Gallery cannot be cancelled, or it will
GPF.

ITEM 7-Collapsing and expanding items in the Help Index may cause screen
redraw problems.

ITEM 8-When running the Newsletter wizard, Jazzy style, some vertical
titles (mastheads) are not created.

ITEM 9-If you choose Special Paper Card in the Card and Invitation wizard, an
error message will appear which says that files can not be displayed.

==============================
SECTION 6: OTHER: Known Issues
==============================

ITEM 1-Fancy First Letters in the Publisher Companion are not available as
clipart in this release.

ITEM 2-Descriptions for Design Gallery categories are not final in this
release.

ITEM 3-The ClipArt Gallery window may be left visible after inserting
ClipArt into your publication.

ITEM 4-Working with the Design Gallery and the Help Index may produce screen
redraw problems.

ITEM 5-After working with the Design Gallery, if you click the colors button
on the toolbar, the colors may be displayed incorrectly on ATI or S3-based
video cards.

ITEM 6-The Fill Colors dialog may flash during selection of items in the
dialog.

ITEM 7-Some BorderArt files display on screen with undesirable white lines
in the background. These lines typically do not show up when printing.

ITEM 8-Tooltips on colors in the colors dialogs may display incorrectly.
