1 Application compatibility------------------------------------

See the Troubleshooting Font Works Express section of the online
Help file for more information on application compatibility.

WordPerfect 5.x
To update your font list in WordPerfect 5.x after making changes
to the Fonts page in Font Works Express, go to the File menu and
choose Select Printer.... In the Select Printer dialog click on
the Update button. This will cause WordPerfect to update its font
list. Click on the Close button to close the dialog.

AmiPro and WordPerfect 6.0 macros
Font Works Express includes macros that will automatically update
the font menus in these these word processing applications after
you add fonts to or remove fonts from the menu in Font Works Express.

Aldus PageMaker 5.0
When you install Font Works Express, the MAI.DLL file included
with PageMaker is automatically replaced with an updated version.
If you reinstall PageMaker, you may also need to reinstall
Font Works Express to restore this updated file.

When you open a document that contains a hidden font, PageMaker
will report the hidden font as missing and show it replaced with
itself. You can ignore this message; Font Works Express will
supply the hidden font and your document will display and print
using the correct fonts.

2 Tips & known problem areas-----------------------------------

a) ATM FONTS

If you have Adobe Type Manager (ATM) installed and the Show
printer fonts button is checked on the System section of
Font Works Express' Settings page, PostScript printer fonts
may not appear in Font Works Express. When a PostScript
printer is the current default printer, fonts installed in ATM
which are also available on the printer--e.g. Times and
Helvetica--will not appear as printer fonts in Font Works
Express. The fonts will appear and behave as usual on
application font menus.

When a PostScript printer is your default printer, PostScript
fonts in the ATM default directory (as shown in the ATM
Control Panel) may appear as printer fonts in Font Works
Express and on application menus. This will happen if you
chose the Autodownload for PostScript driver option when
you added the fonts with ATM. These fonts can be used the
same as printer fonts and will be automatically downloaded
to your printer.

b) PRINTING

TIP: improving PostScript printing speed
You can improve print speed on PostScript printers by not
downloading EC fonts when there is an equivalent printer
font. Eight EC font familes have close equivalents on PostScript
printers. To use these PostScript printer fonts when printing,
modify your WIN.INI file as follows:

1. Run the System Editor application by choosing File/Run...
in Program Manager, typing SYSEDIT and pressing ENTER.
2. From the Window menu of SysEdit, choose the WIN.INI entry
to bring the window with WIN.INI to the front.
3. Find the [PSCRIPT] section of WIN.INI by choosing
Search/Find..., typing [PSCRIPT] and pressing ENTER. If
there is no [PSCRIPT] section, scroll to the end of the
file, press ENTER to add a blank line, then type in [PSCRIPT]
    and press ENTER.
4. Add the following lines to the [PSCRIPT] section of
WIN.INI. You can either type them in (being very careful to
type them exactly as written) or choose Edit/Copy while
reading this file in Write, then switch back to SysEdit,
position the text cursor at the beginning of the line just
    below [PSCRIPT], and choose Edit/Paste.

	Mentor EC=Palatino
	Stylus EC=AvantGarde
	New Tribute EC=Times
	Schoolbook EC=NewCenturySchlbk
	Bookman EC=Bookman
	Informa EC=Helvetica
	Informa Narrow EC=Helvetica-Narrow
	Courier EC=Courier

5. Restart Windows. Any document created with these EC fonts
will now print on PostScript printers with the faster
    printer fonts.

PROBLEM: awkward character spacing with LaserJet 4/4M Plus
PostScript printer
When using the PostScript printer driver to print to a LaserJet
4MP, ElseWare fonts may exhibit unexpected character spacing.
This occurs only if you are sending the fonts to the PostScript
printer as Type 42 (PostScript encapsulated TrueType outline).
The problem does not occur with standard LaserJet 4 printers
or when using the LaserJet 4/4M Plus printer in PCL mode.

To correct the problem, send the fonts to the printer in either
Type 1 or Type 3 format. Click the Printers Icon in the Windows
Control Panel, choose Setup, and choose TrueType Fonts. Next,
choose Type 1 or Type 3 from the Send TrueType Fonts to
This Printer As box.

PROBLEM: white space in characters when printing to PostScript
printers
When sending ElseWare fonts to some PostScript printers as
Type1 outlines, white space will appear in characters (such
as the $ and #) with overlapping shapes. To correct the
problem, send the fonts to the printer in Type 3 format.
Click the Printers Icon in the Windows Control Panel, choose
Setup, and choose TrueType Fonts. Next, choose Bitmap (Type 3)
from the Send TrueType Fonts to This Printer As box.

c) WINDOWS

TIP: do not remove Windows core fonts
Many applications expect certain Windows fonts to be installed.
We recommend that you do not remove the TrueType fonts that are
installed with Windows 3.1--Arial, Courier New, Symbol and Times
New Roman--nor the bitmap screen fonts MS Sans Serif and MS Serif.
These fonts do not have to be kept on the menu to be used.

TIP: do not remove all fonts from the menu
Although Font Works Express allows you to hide all fonts from
application font menus, many applications will refuse to run or,
worse, crash in this state. We recommend that you do not exit
Font Works Express or switch to another application while there
are no fonts on the menu.

PROBLEM: cannot remove Fixedsys, System and Terminal
Although the Windows Fonts Control Panel seems to let you
remove these three system fonts, in fact they cannot be removed
from your system and will continue to be available to Font Works
Express and other applications.

d) MISCELLANEOUS

PROBLEM: invalid TrueType errors or other crashes
If you experience frequent Windows error messages saying
"Invalid TrueType font detected," or if applications or Font Works
Express crash, you may need to update your display driver.
Contact the manufacturer of your video display adapter to make sure
you are using the latest driver.

TIP: don't use different fonts with the same name
If you have two different fonts installed with the same
name--such as "Symbol," which is available both as a TrueType font
and an ATM font--you may not get the font you expect when you
choose one of them from the menu. We recommend you de-install extra
fonts with the same name.

PROBLEM: Intellifont for Windows fonts appear as printer fonts
If you have Intellifont installed, you must check the Show printer
fonts box on Font Works Express' Settings/System page to see these
fonts in Font Works Express and other applications. These fonts will
then appear as printer fonts in Font Works; as a result, you cannot
remove them from the menu.

PROBLEM: EC font files written to disk are empty
If you use the Create font files... button on the ElseWare fonts
section of the Settings page to create disk versions of your EC
fonts, be sure the destination disk has enough space to hold all the
files. Each EC font file takes about 60K of space on your disk. If
you do not have enough disk space to accommodate all the files,
some of the created files will be empty. In the File Manager, if
you have the All File Details option checked in the View menu, these
font files will appear with a size of 0.

3 Uninstalling Font Works Express------------------------------------

Should you need to remove Font Works Express from your hard
disk, you can do so with the Font Works Express Setup program.

1. Insert Disk1 from the Font Works Express disk set in drive A:.
2. Choose File/Run... in Program Manager, type a:\setup and
    press ENTER.
3. Setup will present you with the option to remove or
reinstall Font Works Express. Click the Remove button to
remove Font Works Express from your hard disk. The install
program will then need to restart Windows.
4. If you have a Font Works Express group in the Program
Manager, select it and choose Delete from the File menu
    to remove it.
