Guidelines for Handy scanners with Interpreter
--------------------------------------------

Preliminaries :

a) It is assumed that Interpreter and your handy scanner interface
   card are correctly installed, according to the manufacturer's
   instructions.

b) In many cases, OCR made with an handy scanner requires
   delicate manipulation. For occasional encoding of well printed
   text, which does not contain too many typographic difficulties
   (i.e. very small or too many touching characters, ...), you
   can easily obtain excellent results.

0. Before starting Interpreter, please check the following points:

   - your handy scanner is connected to its interface card;
   - the brightness button is set in the middle of the two limit
     positions;
   - the resolution selector is on 300 dpi (you may try 400 dpi
     if the image quality is poor);
   - the page on which you'll perform the scanning is on a flat
     surface.

1. In Interpreter, click on the "Scan" command in the "Process"
   menu. You will need to select a scanning direction with the
   new menu displayed on the screen : when the direction has been
   selected, the cursor changes into a small handy scanner.

2. Place your scanner on the part of the document you want to
   deal with. Press the start button of your scanner and hold,
   whilst you move it in the selected direction. The movement has
   to be slow, and as regular as possible. The scanner LED must
   remain alight during the scanning, otherwise the scanned image
   will be useless for the OCR. The image is displayed
   simultaneously with the scanner move.

3. When your image is scanned, press the space bar to pass
   control to Interpreter.
   If the scanning was performed from left to right (or right to
   left), pressing the space bar will rotate the image directly.

4. Check the image quality on the screen. The OCR performance is
   proportional to this quality. If necessary, adjust the
   brightness to darken or lighten the scanned image, so as to
   obtain characters which are neither cut or too dark.

   If you detect variation in the character shape or size,
   variable and irregular inclination of the text lines or too
   many touching characters, difficulties will be encountered by
   the system to perform good recognition.

5. Eventually repeat the above steps with different values of
   brightness and resolution.
