		     Smart LAN Support Software

			    Release 4.3

		  Madge Networks March 1995

		------------------------------------

This file describes release 4.3 of the Smart LAN Support Software for
the following Ringnodes:

Smart 16/4 EISA Ringnode Smart 16/4 ISA Client Ringnode
Smart 16/4 MC32 Ringnode Smart 16/4 AT Ringnode
Smart 16/4 MC Ringnode Smart 16/4 AT Plus Ringnode
Smart 16 Ringnode Smart 16/4 PCI Ringnode
      Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode
Smart 16/4 ISA Client Plus Ringnode
Smart 16/4 ISA Client PnP Ringnode

Release 4.3 contains the following improvements and new features:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Release 4.3 includes enhancements to the Smart II Software which
give it even better handling of multiple protocols. This means that
it is now possible to load more interface and protocol modules onto
   your Ringnodes. For Ringnodes with:

   * 512k of RAM you can load all of the modules.
   * 256k of RAM you can load 4 or 5 modules in some combinations.
   * 128k of RAM you can load 2 or 3 modules in some combinations.

In some combinations the Smart II Software can deliver more than
twice the performance of equivalent, host-based, protocol stacks.
Combinations of ODI and NDIS, or combinations that include the
Smart LLC interface, give particularly good performance in
comparison with host-based protocol stacks. For best performance,
load only the interface and protocol modules that you need.

2) Release 4.3 includes a multiple ROM image for the AT Plus and ISA
Client Plus Ringnodes (ATPLUS.ROM). This image includes a
configuration utility, a Remote Reset boot image, and an RPL boot
image. In addition, the MadgeBoot utility on disk 1 now enables
you to perform Remote Booting on Ringnodes that do not have
Smartroms. This is particularly useful for the Smart 16/4 PCMCIA
   Ringnode.

3) Release 4.3 includes a facility for providing your Ringnode and
Smartrom with a password. This ensures that it cannot be
reconfigured by unauthorized users. For example, you can disable
Promiscuous Receive Mode on the Ringnode and then password protect
the configuration to ensure that nobody re-enables it unless they
know the password. For more information, refer to Chapters 3 and 4
of the "Smartrom version 2.x User Guide".

4) Release 4.3 includes support for Novell's BOOTP.NLM module, so that
workstations using the UDP module of the Smart TCP/IP software can
receive their IP addresses and other information from a BOOTP
server. For more information, refer to the TCPIP.INF file.

5) Release 4.3 includes the new Smart NDIS interface.

6) Release 4.3 continues the process of upgrading the Madge Fastmac
drivers to Fastmac Plus. This gives them even faster performance.

7) Release 4.3 includes a new driver for Windows NT. This is a
Miniport NDIS3 driver for versions 3.5 and 3.51 of Windows NT, and
for Windows '95. For more information, see the WINNT.INF file.

8) Release 4.3 implements the Madge concept of Ringnode Mirroring by
means of a new NetWare Loadable Module called MMIRROR.NLM. This was
previously implemented by means of command-line options for the
   NetWare server drivers.

Ringnode Mirroring allows two Smart 16/4 Ringnodes in a server to
be connected to the same ring. One of the Ringnodes is designated
as the Primary Ringnode, the other is a back-up or Hot-Standby.
The Primary Ringnode is monitored by the server. If the Primary
Ringnode fails due to a cable fault or an adapter check, the server
shuts it down safely and maintains full service to network users by
   automatically initializing the Hot Standby.

For more information about MMIRROR.NLM, see the MMIRROR.INF file.

Release 4.3 contains the following improvements and new features for
ISA Client Plug 'n' Play Ringnode users:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Release 4.3 is the first release of the Smart LAN Support Software
that supports the Smart 16/4 ISA Client PnP Ringnode.

2 For important information about using this Ringnode, please refer
   to the ISAPNP.INF file.

3) For important information about using the PnP Ringnode with Windows
'95, please refer to the WIN95.INF file.

Release 4.3 contains the following improvements and new features for
PCMCIA Ringnode users:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Release 4.3 includes a Madge Card Services utility called
MADGECS.EXE. This replaces your vendor's Card Services and uses
only 4kbytes of DOS memory. There is also an OS/2 version of Madge
Card Services called MADGECS.SYS. Madge Card Services requires
that you have Socket Services 2.01 (or above) loaded. Only use
MADGECS if you are not using any PCMCIA adapters in your computer
apart from the Madge PCMCIA Ringnode. For more information, refer
   to the MADGECS.INF file.

2) Included on the release disks is a utility called IFADAP.EXE. Use
this, in conjunction with the TRPOWER utility, to save battery
power when you are not using the network. For more information,
refer to Appendix C of the "Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode User Guide"
   (part number: 100-146).

3) Included on the release disks is a utility called TRPOWER. This
utility enables you to control whether or not your Ringnode uses
your computer's battery power when you are not using the network.
For more information, refer to Appendix C of the "Smart 16/4 PCMCIA
Ringnode User Guide" (part number: 100-146).

4) Included on the release disks is a utility called TRSPEED.EXE. This
utility sets the ring speed for your Ringnode. When you unpack the
Ringnode, it is set to operate at 4Mbps. To set it to 16Mbps type:

   TRSPEED /16 [ENTER].

The speed that you set remains until you change it by running
TRSPEED again. For more information, refer to Section 2.2 of the
"Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode User Guide" (part number: 100-146).

***********************************************************
* Important Notes for users of the Smart 16/4 PCI Ringnode*
***********************************************************

1) In a DOS Environment you must ensure that you are using Dos 6.0 or
above. If you are using an older version of DOS you must upgrade.
It is also important, if you are using EMM386.EXE, that you use
version 4.49 (which is PCI aware) or later. You can obtain this
from the MS-DOS forum on Compuserve. Go into the Forum and search
the library for EMM386. Download the file EMM622.EXE. This is a
self extracting file which contains instructions on upgrading. For
more information about using memory managers see the file PCI.INF.

2) If you are using MADGEODI.LAN for NetWare 3.x and 4.x servers, you
must use the MSM.NLM (or MSM31X.NLM) and TOKENTSM.NLM files that
are included with this release. This will ensure compatibility with
   the latest ODI specification.

3) The MDGMPORT.SYS driver is for version 3.5 of Windows NT, it does
not support earlier versions of NT because these were not PCI
   aware.

4) The NDIS 3 interface for Windows for Workgroups does not currently
support the necessary calls for PCI. However, you can use the NDIS
   2 drivers.

5) In some computers you may find that some features of the PCI
chipset can be altered in the CMOS Setup to allow greater
throughput from the 16/4 PCI Ringnode. If you have the option, you
may wish to set " Parking host CPU on PCI bus" to ON. This should
improve the performance of your video and also of disk accesses,
but it may slow down bus master EISA or Micro Channel devices if
your machine has a mutiple bus architecture.

6) Banyan Vines currently does not have support for PCI hardware at
the server. However, NDIS 2 support is available at the
   workstation.

7) If you experience problems using the Smart TCPIP modules across an
IP router when the destination address does NOT exist, please
contact Madge Technical Support for updated modules.

8) Madge actively maintains a compatibilty database of PCI hardware.
If you experience hardware compatibility difficulties contact your
local Madge representative for more information.
