Fractal Design PainterX2 version 2.0 for Windows
------------------------------------------------

This file contains last minute information which could not be included
in the manual.

GDI Printing To Black & White Printers
--------------------------------------

This option is only available when GDI Printing is selected. The
option "Print Grayscale" has been added to the Print dialog. Choose
this button when printing to grayscale or black and white printers.
The number of gray levels used will depend on the printer, but the
maximum number of gray levels supported is 256. Printing is much
faster with this option on, and it can also be used with color
printers if quick grayscale output is desired.

GDI Printing Quality & Speed
----------------------------

This section only applies when GDI Printing is selected. Some of the
notes in the manual regarding the "No Print Banded" option may no
longer be valid, so it is suggested that you experiment with this
option to get the best quality and speed with your printer. This
option is found by choosing the Edit menu, Set Preferences menu item,
and then the Windows Setup button. Sometimes, the best setting for
"No Print Banded" will be different for Portrait and Landscape
printing.

HP Color Printers (such as HP550C)
----------------------------------

When GDI Printing in Landscape mode to an HP Color Printer, you may
notice band-like artifacts. This reduction in quality is due to a
bug in the HP Windows printer drivers. We have isolated the exact
cause of this bug and HP has acknowledged that the bug exists in
their driver. You must contact HP to obtain a new Windows printer
driver once they have fixed the bug. We have gone to great expense
to make it as easy as possible for HP to fix this problem, as we even
wrote a special print test application which was forwarded to HP.

Using Masking Brushes
---------------------

There is a new brush library (mask.brs). There are two ways to make
these new masking brushes available in the PainterX2 Brush Palette
window.

   1) You can add the masking brushes to the existing brush library
which you are currently using. To do this, select Brush Mover
from the Options menu, click on the Open button and select the
masking brush file (mask.brs). Now, all of the new masking
brushes will appear on the right side of the Brush Mover dialog.
Select the masking brushes you want to add and click on the Copy
button. Now, those masking brushes will be added to your current
brush library on the left side of the dialog. You will have to be
careful when using this new brush library with Painter 2.0a, see
      Painter 2.0a Notes below.

   2) You can select the masking brush library (mask.brs) as the current
brush library. To do this, select the Brush Palette from the
Windows menu. If the Library button is not visible in the Brush
Palette window, click on the maximize button. Now, click on the
Library button at the bottom of the Brush Palette window and select
the masking brush file (mask.brs). You can not use the masking
brushes with Painter 2.0a, see Painter 2.0a Notes below.

PainterX2 Improvements
----------------------

In addition to those mentioned in the manual, the speed of drawing with
brushes has been improved, as compared with Painter 2.0. Improvements
ranging from 20% for the Fat Eraser to 79% faster for Large Water have
measured on the 486DX. In most cases, these speed increases may only
be noticeable in the time it takes to replay a session.

Importing EPS Files
-------------------

Do not attempt to use complex EPS files as friskets. PainterX2 is a
paint program, not a draw program, and the Open EPS command is not
intended to import complex drawings.

Painter 2.0a Notes
------------------

PainterX2 will be installed in the same directory as your existing
Painter 2.0a. You can still run Painter 2.0a after installing PainterX2,
but you need to be aware of the following minor problems.

   1) You can not use the masking brushes (mask.brs) with Painter 2.0a.
If you have copied the masking brushes into an existing brush
library (as described in Using Masking Brushes above), you can
still use this library with Painter 2.0a, as long as you do not
select any of the masking brushes (in the Brush Palette).

General Notes
-------------

If it ever becomes necessary to re-install PainterX2, such as when some
files may have become corrupted, it may also be necessary to re-install
Painter 2.0a before PainterX2. However, this will overwrite any changes
made to such things as preferences, default brush file, etc..
