Obtaining and Using the Access Service Pack
-------------------------------------------
In December of 1994, Microsoft announced the
Access Service Pack. This software is an update
to Microsoft Access 2.0 that fixes several known
problems. Total Access Analyzer is completely
compatible with the Access Service Pack.

To determine if you are already have the
Access Service Pack installed, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft Access 2.0.
2. From the Help menu, choose About Microsoft Access.
3. Press the [System Info] button.
4. In the "Choose a Category" box, click the arrow,
and then choose System DLL's from the list.
5. Scroll to MSAJT200.DLL in the list.
The version number is to the right of the file
name. If the version number is 2.0, you are
*not* using the upgraded version of Microsoft
Access 2.0. If the version number is 2.5, you
*are* using the the upgraded version.

NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY OBTAIN THE
      ACCESS SERVICE PACK FROM MICROSOFT.

The files can be obtained in one of three ways:

1. Through the Internet: look in
   DESKAPPS\ACCESS\KB\README.TXT

2. Through Compuserve: GO MSL, search for
ACCSVC.EXE, display the results and download.

3. Through the Microsoft Donwload Service
(MSDL): dial (206) 936-6735 and download
   the ACCSVC.EXE file.

4. Through the mail: Dial Microsoft FastTips
at 1-800-936-4100 and follow these steps:

   a. Press 4 for Microsoft Access.
   b. Press 1 for version 2.x.
   c. Press 1 for Express Order Service.
   d. When you are prompted, press 2 for a
      mail delivery method.
   e. At the tone, enter the number 1124 for
      the item id.
   f. Press # to verify the order is correct
   g. When prompted, leave your name and
mailing address in the voice mailbox.
   h. When prompted, press * to finish your order.

Problems while building the Table/Field Lookup
----------------------------------------------
Microsoft Access 2.0 (including the Service Pack
version) contains a bug that may cause your system
to crash while Total Access Analyzer is generating
documentation. This happens while the
"Table/Field Lookup" is being generated as part of
the Object Inventory operation. If your system hangs,
or generates a GPF or Application Error while the
Table/Field Lookup is being generated, you are
encountering this bug.

To resolve this, we have incorporated a workaround
in version 2.02 of Total Access Analyzer that allows
you to select an alternate documentation method.
To select the alternate method, press the
[Advanced] button from the "Describe Documentation"
form. At the bottom of the form, click on the
"Use Alternate Resolve Method" checkbox.
Re-run Total Access Analyzer and generate
documentation. Use of the this alternate method
has no effect on the documentation that
Total Access Analyzer generates. It merely uses a
different method to obtain the documentation.
Note that documentation with this option may
take slightly longer to generate.

This setting is stored by Total Access Analyzer
and remains in place for all subsequent
documetation generation, unless you change it.

Changes in Total Access Analyzer Since Version 2.0
--------------------------------------------------
* Support for InputMask property in tables and fields

* Fixes problems with attaching to documentation
databases with error "Data Changed Operation
  stopped" or "Disk I/O" error.

* Support for type declaration characters in
  procedure references

* Fixes "Out of String Space" problem.

* Fixes "Object variable not set" error that
occurred in rare cases with version 2.02.

* Now supports the German Language version of
  Microsoft Access 2.0

* Includes Conversion utility to convert
Total Access Analyzer reports to A4 Paper Size.
(See "Converting Reports to A4 Paper Size"
  later in this document.)

* Margins on reports changed to support printers
with smaller printable areas, such as inkjet
  printers.

* Enhanced report preview from View screens,
allowing easier selection of reports to preview.

* Fixed problem with previewing and printing
reports generating an "Object variable not set"
  error message.

* Program now displays an warning message if
more than one form or report blueprint is
  about to be previewed.

* Fixed problem when viewing form documentation,
clicking on a field or index record does not
  update properties window.

* Fixed reports where overprinting caused
extra characters and references to "Field0"

* Fixed reports where erroneous properties were
  printing.

* Fixed problem where functions called from
queries were being flagged as non-existant,
  when they did exist.

* Adjusted timing when running queries to
  avoid "Reserved Error" or "Data has changed;
  Operation Stopped" messages.

* Adjusted timing when building Table/Field
lookup to avoid problems or system lockups.

* Fixed problem where module printouts were
not available unless "Generate Module XRef"
  option was selected.

* Changed search path for TA2DOC.DLL file.
It can now be installed in either the
Windows System directory or the Access
directory. Total Access Analyzer can now
run correctly even if the TA2DOC.DLL
  cannot be found.

* Fixed problem with Module printouts
printing interleaved code from two different
  modules.

* Fixed problem where "Explicit Printer Set"
errors were being shown for reports with Default
printer set. This error check is no longer
supported for forms, but does work correctly
  for reports.

* Fixed problem with custom report headers
not printing if changed from default.

* Fixed query on Module errors report to
  include all module errors.

* Fixed problem with module xref documentation
reporting "Overflow" on modules with high-order
  ASCII characters.

Installation
------------
The Total Access Analyzer installation program installs a
dynamic-link library (DLL) file named TA2DOC.DLL. When
Total Access Analyzer runs, it looks for this file in
one of two places:

1. Your Microsoft Windows System directory
   (typically WINDOWS\SYSTEM)

- or -

2. Your Access 2.0 directory containing the file
   MSACCESS.EXE (typically \ACCESS or \ACCESS20)

If Total Access Analyzer cannot find the DLL file when it
is running, it will be unable to determine the amount of
free space on your system. Note that this space check is
for informational purposes only and does not affect program
operation.

The installation program prompts you for the destination
directory for this file, suggesting your Microsoft Windows
System directory as a default. This is typically
WINDOWS\SYSTEM.

If your Windows System directory is not available or is
write-protected, you can specify an alternate directory
for this DLL file. The alternate directory is the directory
in which you installed Microsoft Access.

If you don't have write access to directory you specified
for the TA2DOC.DLL file, the installation program displays an
error message and continues the installation. As mentioned
earlier, this problem should not affect the normal operation
of Total Access Analyzer.

Using the Help File
-------------------
The Total Access Analyzer On-Line help file is
accessible from any part of the program by pressing the
[F1] key or the [Help] button shown on many of the forms.
If you have a question about the operation of
Total Access Analyzer, be sure to check On-Line Help.
The Help information is more current than the printed
manual and may contain additional information.

Finding Unused Objects
----------------------
One of the most common requests of Total Access Analyzer
is for a list of unused objects. For example, you might
need to see a list of queries that are not used anywhere.
While Total Access Analyzer does find unused Procedures
and unused Variables, it does not explicitly find other
unused objects.

The reason for this is that there are many places that
you may reference an object in your Access database that
Total Access Analyzer is unable to locate. For example,
you may reference a table or query in an expression, or
in response to some type of user input. In these cases,
the actual name of the object being referenced is unknown
until your database is actually being used. Because
of this, there are some places where an object can be
referenced but Total Access Analyzer is unaware of these
references.

As a workaround to, you can use the Data Diagram report
in Total Access Analyzer as a starting point to find
unused tables and queries. The Data Diagram report shows
a hierarchical printout of Tables, Queries and the
objects that call them. On this report, when you see a
table with no objects below it in the tree, Total Access
Analyzer is telling you that it could find no references
to the table. You can use this information as a
starting point to investigate whether or not the
table is actually used. The same holds true for queries.
If the report shows a query with no objects below it
in the tree, you can assume that Total Access Analyzer
has found no references to that query.

We have found that Total Access Analyzer finds
approximately 85-90% of the object references in a
typical database. Given this figure, you should not
assume that because Total Access Analyzer says an
object is not used, that you can delete it. Use the
information Total Access Analyzer provides as a
starting point, and confirm the consequences of
deleting an object before actually assuming it
is not used.

Converting to A4 Paper Size
---------------------------
Total Access Analyzer reports are set to print on
8.5 x 11 inch paper by default. If you are using
the A4 paper size, you can use the included utility
to change the reports to A4.

To run this utility, you must open the Total Access Analyzer
database (TA2DOC_C.MDA) as a regular database. To do this,
follow the steps outlined under "Opening the Total Access
Analyzer Database" in Chapter 6: Advanced Topics of the
Total Acess Analyzer User Guide.

Once the TA2DOC_C.MDA database is open, choose
File|Run Macro. When prompted for the macro name, type in:

	Convert Report Page Size

and press [Enter]. The utility form will appear. Select
the paper size you desire and press the [Convert]
button. All changes are automatically saved. Please do
not interrupt this operation while it is running.

When the utility is done, press [Close] to close the
form. Exit Microsoft Access and re-enable Total Access
Analyzer as a library database as explained under
"Finishing Up" in Chapter 6: Advanced Topics of
the Total Acess Analyzer User Guide.
