Thank you for taking time to try and evaluate Arcada's Backup Exec for
Windows NT AS Server Edition product.  This evaluation copy is a fully
functional version of the real product, however, after 30 days of use,
this copy will cease to perform any tape operations.

For your convenience, a text file version of our manual is in the root
directory of Installation Disk #2.  The file is called MANUAL.TXT.

1 INSTALLATION NOTES
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Drivers Diskette
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Backup Exec includes a Drivers Diskette that contains new and updated 
Tape Drive drivers.  If you are NOT using Windows NT 3.5, read the 
README.TXT on the Drivers Diskette and load the Tape Driver you need.  
If you are using Windows NT 3.5, you don't need to load these drivers - 
they are included with the new version of NT.


Loader Support
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have a supported loader (see the Loader Support Option section 
below), you are encouraged to evaluate Backup Exec's Loader Support 
Option.  To install Loader Support, follow these steps:

Part 1 - Loader support files.
   The installation program for Backup Exec for Windows NT AS
     creates an Install Loader Support icon in the Backup Exec
     program group.
   a. Double-Click on the Install Loader Support icon.
   b. Insert Installation Disk #2 into your diskette drive.
   c. Click OK - The loader files will be copied to your hard disk.
   d. Click OK to exit the installation program.

Part 2 - Loader Driver Installation.
   a. Double-Click on the Windows NT Setup icon - This will open
        Windows NT Setup.
   b. Under Options, select Add/Remove Tape Devices.
   c. In the Tape Device Setup window, click Add.
   d. In the Select Tape Device Option window, use the arrow button
        to display the list of options - Select Other.  This will
        open the Insert Diskette window.
   e. Insert the Loader diskette into your diskette drive and enter
        the following information:
        If you are running Windows NT on an x86-based computer,
          type: a:\i386
        If you are running Windows NT on a MIPS computer,
          type: a:\mips
        If you are running Windows NT on an Alpha computer,
          type: a:\alpha
      then click OK.
   f. Select Arcada supported SCSI-2 Medium Changer and click OK.
   g. In the Select Tape Device Option window, select Arcada
        supported SCSI-2 Medium Changer and click Install.
   h. This will open the Windows NT Setup window.  It will show the
        full path to the files you are installing.  Click Continue.
        The driver for loader support will be installed.
   i. Click Close and then exit Windows NT Setup.  The changes
        you have made will not take effect until the computer is
        restarted.

2. WHAT'S NEW IN BACKUP EXEC V5.01
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

   - AutoLoader Support Module

     You can create multiple Magazine descriptions and group the
     available slots.  Backups may be sent to any group at random.

     Backup Exec's AutoLoader Module supports many loaders from ADIC,
     Compaq, DEC, Dilog, Exabyte, and HP...with support for new 
     loaders being added continuously.

     For information on the Autoloader Module and an up-to-date list
     of supported loaders, please call Arcada Software at
     1-800-3ARCADA (1-800-327-2232).


   - Global Network View

     You can select entire domains at once; see only the default shares,
     like C$ and D$; see the user shares, or both.  You can backup and
     restore data to any drive on the network.


   - Full Unicode Character Support

     Backup Exec fully supports the Unicode character set and takes
     advantage of the very deep (greater than 256) path support in
     Microsoft Windows NT version 3.5.


   - Software Compression

     Software compression doubles the amount of data that can be backed
     up with tape drives that do not have hardware compression. Software
     compression also reduces backup time on slower devices.


   - Launch Multiple Instances

     The launcher now allows multiple copies of Backup Exec to run
     at the same time for better support of multiple tape drives.


   - 3D Look and Feel

     The new look helps make Backup Exec easier to learn.  It looks
     great!


   - Column Support

     View only the columns you want to see and size them to best fit
     your screen. Click on any column title to sort by that column.


   - Automatic Catalog Grooming

     Let Backup Exec remove catalogs that have not been accessed in the
     last 90 days, or select a time span that is right for you.


   - Tape Data Verify

     Backup Exec can perform a consistency check of the data on the tape
     without comparing it to the disk drive.  This reduces network
     traffic and allows high speed tape drives to perform verifies after
     backup at top speed.


   - Delete Key Support

     Select any catalog file or logfile and press the delete key to
     remove it.


   - Preserve Tree Option

     Restore a single file to any directory you choose by unchecking the
     preserve tree option on restore.

3. UNDOCUMENTED FEATURE: Password Database Support in Networks Window
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

     When Backup Exec attaches (during a selection or expansion
operation) to a share in the Networks window, it attempts to attach with
the same name and password that you used to log in.  If Backup Exec
cannot attach because of a security conflict, Backup Exec will inform
you that it could not attach and then prompt you for a valid user name
and password for the desired share.  If the attachment is successful,
Backup Exec stores the new user name and password in a database (in
encrypted form), and uses it for ALL SUBSEQUENT attachments (including
Jobs).

     To change a stored user name and/or password in THIS release of
Backup Exec, you must make the current attachment fail (i.g., by
changing the password of the user name you are using to attaching in
Windows NT).  This feature will be enhanced in v6.0.

     If you have selected an entire domain or computer (i.e., many
shares) to attach to, you will be prompted for each share that has a
security conflict.  If you cancel from the user name and password
dialog, Backup Exec will continue trying to connect to all of the
remaining shares.  To cancel the entire operation, you must cancel from
the "Scanning Network Devices" dialog.

     IMPORTANT: The name of the encrypted database file is called
BEWINNT.PWD and is stored in the \BKUPEXEC\NT\DATA directory.  This file
also contains encrypted MSMail user names and passwords that are used in
the EMail support for scheduled jobs.  For additional security, Arcada
strongly recommends that the file be secured by installing Backup Exec
on a NTFS partition and using File Permissions (in File Manager) to
protect the file from unauthorized access.

4. TROUBLESHOOTING - HINTS AND TIPS

Automatic Drive Selection
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Backup Exec will automatically load the selection list named
'StartUp' when it starts.  The default 'StartUp' selection list
contains all the local drives.  To modify the StartUp list, use
the edit selections feature or delete the StartUp script.


Cleaning your Loader Automatically
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To configure Backup Exec to clean your Loader on a scheduled basis,
follow these directions:

   1. Create a Loader Magazine Definition with one group designated
      as "Clean Slot" and assign it the last slot in the magazine.
      Then assign the other slots in the magazine to groups according
      to your backup strategy.

   2. Insert a cleaning tape into slot you designated as "Clean Slot".

   3. Create a new job called "Cleaning Tape" and assign it any
      valid selection file.  Click on the Hardware button and UNselect
      the "Use Current Device Selection in Settings - Hardware"
      switch and select the Magazine and Cleaning Slot you created
      (along with the correct Drive and Loader selection).

   4. Finally, schedule the "Cleaning Tape" job according to the
      Loader Manufacturer's suggested cleaning cycle.

   Cleaning Tape Delay - To allow enough time for some loaders to complete
      a cleaning tape cycle, Backup Exec employs a Cleaning Tape Delay.
      This delay affects all types of loaders and is set to 420 seconds
      (7 Min.) by default to accommodate loaders with the slowest cleaning
      tape cycles.  However many loaders, especially those with DAT drives,
      need much less time for a cleaning tape cycle.  If you are adept at
      using RegEdt32, set the "Cleaning Tape Delay Time" value in the
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Arcada/Bexecnt/Loader key for the
      loader connected from the list below.  If you are using an INI file,
      make this change in the INI file that you use with the loader.  Note
      that if you two (or more) loaders, you need to set this number to the
      loader requiring the longest cleaning cycle delay time.

          ADIC 4mm DAT Autochanger  = 15 sec.
          ADIC VLS 8mm DAT Loader   = 360 sec.
          Compaq 4586 Loader        = 15 sec.
          Conner Diamondback Loader = 15 sec.
          Conner 7L-DLT             = Leave at default (420 sec.)
          Conner 5L-DLT             = Leave at default (420 sec.)
          DEC TLZ6 Loader           = Leave at default (420 sec.)
          DEC/Cipher L860 (L7a)     = Leave at default (420 sec.)
          DEC DLT2500 Loader        = Leave at default (420 sec.)
          Dilog Libra Loader        = 15 sec.
          Exabyte 10e Loader        = 15 sec.
          Exabyte 10i Loader        = 15 sec.
          Exabyte 210 Loader        = 240 sec.
          HP 1553A Loader           = 15 sec.
          HP SureStore 1200E        = 15 sec.


Creating Common Program Groups in Setup
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You must be a member of the Administrators, Server Operators, or Power
Users Group to create a Common Program Group.


Exclude Files
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Backup Exec allows you to use a single "global" exclude list to
exclude files that you *DO NOT* want to back up.  For example, you
may want to exclude all temporary (.TMP) files from being backed up.
The way to exclude these files from backup is as follows:

   Determine those files that are NEVER to be backed up, for ALL the
   servers desired.  Under the selections menu option choose
   'EDIT SELECTIONS'.  Select the 'Excludes' list and add the
   files that should never be backed up to it.

Use extreme caution when using this exclude list.  Excluding files
from backup is risky, especially if you ever have to completely
restore a system from scratch.  No indication will be given that the
files were excluded from backup.  It is possible to exclude ALL files
on a server/share from being backed up.


Hardware Compression
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have seen several tape drives that cannot support mixing hardware
compressed sets with non-hardware compressed sets on the same tape.
Tapes can be written incorrectly, making a restore impossible.  We
strongly recommend that all sets on a tape be either hardware
compressed or not. Software compression is not affected by this
problem.


Installed Tape Drives
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be sure the necessary software drivers for attached tape drives
and tape drive controllers have been installed through Windows NT
SETUP and loaded with a system reboot prior to running the Backup
Exec software.


Multiple Sessions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have multiple tape drives, you might find the /ini:filename
command line option useful.  By using the /ini:filename option Backup
Exec will create an INI file in the \winnt directory.  This allows
each Backup Exec icon to have its own default settings.  See the manual
for more details.


Netware
~~~~~~~
While you can back up Netware networks with Backup Exec, it does not
currently back up security information or anything but the primary
name space.  Binderies and Macintosh resource forks will not be backed
up.


Network Speed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is a tip to speed up Backup on Windows NT when selections are
made from the networks window.

In the registry, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, open the following key:
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\networkprovider.
It has several values; double click on the "DeviceName" value and
change the case of the first letter in the data. You'll be changing
"\device\LanmanRedirector" to "\Device\LanmanRedirector". Change only
the case of the first letter -- do not change anything else. This
will speed up backups from UNC shares, especially those with many
small files.


NT Security
~~~~~~~~~~~
Network connections to remote servers is the sole responsibility of
the Windows NT system.  If the Backup Exec application is unable to
connect to a remote share, check the permissions of the share as
well as the security rights of the user.


Percent Complete Bar
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The percent complete bar requires that all devices to be backed up
be prescanned before the backup begins.  Turning the percent complete
option off will eliminate the prescan and reduce the time required to
perform the backup.  To turn off the feature, go to the Settings menu
and select Preferences, then unselect "Display Progress Indicator".


Remote Registry Backup & Restore
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order to backup or restore a remote registry, the drive must be
shared from the root of the remote drive.  If the shared directory
is not the root, the registry files will be seen as open files and
skipped.


Restoring The Registry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To restore registry files you must have administrator privileges and
enough free space on the drive to hold a second complete copy of the
registry files being restored.  The restored files will not become
active until the machine is shutdown and restarted.


Tape Drivers
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please check the README file on the drivers diskette before installing
tape drivers from it.  If you are running Windows NT version 3.5, the
tape drives supported by the drivers on the drivers diskette may already
be included with Windows NT.


Windows NT version 3.1 and 3.5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Backup Exec has been tested with Windows NT version 3.1, including
Service Packs 1 and 2.  It has also been tested with Windows NT 3.5.

On Windows NT 3.1, Service Pack 2 is required to see the new
3D Look and Feel. It is automatically disabled on installations not
running Service Pack 2.  Service Packs are available from Microsoft
and on CompuServ.  If you experience problems, the 3D support can be
disabled with /NO3D on the command line.

6. TROUBLESHOOTING EMAIL PROBLEMS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

1. MSMail Spooler occasionally prevents Backup Exec from exiting
     after a Job.

   When Backup Exec is setup to send mail at the end of a job, the
MSMail Spooler that is used to send the mail may hang on exit (you'll
see the MSMail spooler's Icon display "exiting" at the bottom of the
screen).  At this time, Backup Exec's mail has already been sent and
the MSMail Spooler may be closed by clicking on the icon and selecting
"Close" - Backup Exec will then close and any subsequent jobs will
execute.  We've seen this problem happen with approx. 10% of the mail
sent.  A workaround is to leave MSMail open on the computer that Backup
Exec is running on, logged in as the same user the that Backup Exec is
sending the mail as (the same user you typed in the Mail Logon: field
in the EMail Confirmation Window in Backup Exec).  This way, mail is
reliably sent through MSMail rather than the MSMail spooler.


2. Backup Exec does not send MSMail reliably after Jobs.

Possible Cause 1.
   When using the MSMail Postoffice for storage, a limitation of
MSMail is that only one instance of a MSMail user may logged into
MSMail at any one time (i.e. MSMail user Jerry cannot be logged into
MSMail on two computers at the same time).  This affects Backup Exec
in the following way: If Jerry (a MSMail user) is logged into MSMail
on Computer A and Backup Exec is setup to EMail Jerry after a job on
Computer B, Backup Exec will not be able to deliver the mail to Jerry
since he's already logged into MSMail.  This situation can also happen
when two Backup Exec's are sending mail to the same User at the same
time.

Possible Cause 2.
   When Backup Exec is setup to EMail as person A and MSMail is
currently logged in as person B.  For example, if Backup Exec is setup
to send mail as MSMail user Jerry, and Mike is currently logged into
MSMail, Backup Exec will not be able to send mail as Jerry since Mike
is logged in.  To ensure Mail is sent properly, make sure MSMail is
either logged in as the same person you have setup Backup Exec to send
mail as, or MSMail is closed.


EMail Setup Recommendation
   As a workaround to the above problems with MSMail, try the following
on each computer running Backup Exec:

   a. Create a new MSMail user that has the same name as the
        Computer Name.
   b. Use this new name in the Mail Logon: field (in the EMail
        Confirmation Window in Backup Exec) and select to send mail to
        YOU (whoever you want to be notified).
   c. Leave MSMail logged in as the new user (Computer Name).
