Proxy v1.12
********************************************************************************

This file includes information not contained in the Proxy manual.

New Features in Proxy v1.12

The following lists the enhancements included in v1.12 of Proxy:

* Enhancements for improved dial-up (asynchronous) performance:

	- Compression of Windows data has been added. (Proxy always
		compressed DOS graphics information.)
	- Reduced frequency of non-data packets between Master and Host.
	- Better behavior when experiencing high error rates.

* Network polling has been improved

	- Specify number of hops to poll on "Local" networks
	- Choose specific network numbers to poll
	- Reports all servers running PHOST.NLM

* Additional third-party video drivers are supported. Specifically:

	- Microsoft's Enhanced Super VGA driver (which is available on
		CompuServe)
	- Compaq QVision as a 16-color Host
	- Dell S3 drivers as a 16-color Host
	- 8514 and 8514/a drivers will stay in 256-color mode after
wrapping (instead of switching to 16-color mode on some
		machines).
	- Diamond Viper

* Proxy VxD (PROXYV.386) has been added. This improves performance and
also alleviates the problem of not always being able to see all
available Hosts on a high traffic network.

* Support for Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

* Integration with Novell's Network Management System and
Hewlett-Packard's OpenView for Windows network management programs.
This lets you take over and operate workstations from within the NMS
	or OpenView interface.

* Host reboot utility (PHBOOT.EXE) which allows you to have workstations
	automatically reboot on disconnect.

Installing Proxy v1.12

Refer to the Proxy Installation Guide for instructions on installing
Proxy v1.12. After installing Proxy, you will need to install the Proxy VxD
(PROXYV.386) driver on the Proxy Master. To install PROXYV.386:

	* Copy PROXYV.386 into the Windows directory of the Proxy Master
		workstation
	* Add the following line to the [386ENH] section of SYSTEM.INI:
		"device=proxyv.386"

Network Polling

With Proxy v1.12, you can define the "local network" to include segments
within any number of network "hops." The hop count describes how many network
segments separate the Proxy master from the desired Proxy host. For example,
setting the Local, up to #hops field to 0 causes the names of Proxy hosts on
the local segment only to display; setting that field to 1 causes the names of
Proxy hosts on the local segment plus any network directly connected to the
local segment to display.

When using Proxy over a dial-up (asynchronous) connection, set the number of
hops to 1 if you want to search for hosts only on the directly connected
network.

Connecting to a Host PC

To connect to a host PC:

1 Run Proxy and select Connect from the menu. Proxy will poll the
network within the specified number of "hops" and display the names of
	all host PCs.

2 Specify the host PC that you'd like to connect to by performing one of
	the following:

	* Select a host PC from the list and click OK, or
	* Double-click a host PC on the list, or
	* Type in a station name and click OK.

Proxy will establish a connection with the selected PC. Its screen will
appear in your Proxy window, and you'll be able to control it with your
keyboard and mouse. Note that some of the workstation names that Proxy
displays may be grayed out. A gray station name indicates that the PC is not
available to be controlled, either because it is already connected to some
other Proxy Master station, or because it has been "locked" by its owner. If
you try to connect to a PC shown in an error message indicating the reason the
PC is not available.

Connecting to a Different Network Segment

When you first bring up the Connect dialog, Proxy searches for available host
PCs "locally", i.e., within the specified number of network "hops".

To connect to a PC on other specified network segments:

1 Click Inter-Network #, and select the network segment(s) you would
like to search by clicking (and highlighting) the internetwork
	numbers.
2 Click Poll. Proxy will poll the network segment(s) you entered and
display the names of all host PCs it finds on those segment(s).
3 Connect to a host PC using one of the methods described in the
	previous section.

Configuring Windows for Workgroups 3.11 for use with Proxy

Proxy v1.12 is fully compatible with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. In order
for Proxy to operate with Windows for Workgroups, you must specify IPX/SPX
Compatible Transport in NetWork Setup.

Integration with Novell NMS and HP OpenView

Proxy can now be launched directly from within Novell's Network Management
System and Hewlett-Packard's OpenView network management programs. To obtain
this new Proxy functionality, you may either contact Funk Software's Technical
Sales Department at 800-828-4146 (US & Canada) or 617/497-6339, or download
either add-in from CompuServe. To download from CompuServe:

At the CompuServe ! prompt, type:

	GO FUNK

This will take you to the PCVENF forum, where Funk Software occupies message
section and library 7. At the PCVENF ! prompt, type:

	LIB 7

At the LIB 7 ! prompt, type:

DOW PROV.EXE (to download the HP OpenView add-in)

		OR

DOW PRNMS.EXE (to download the NMS add-in)

Novell NMS Launch Program

To use Proxy from NMS, NMS with the NetWare Management System Console 2.0 must
already be installed.

To install the Proxy Network Management System Launch Program, run SETUP.EXE
from the Setup diskette or from the directory to which you copied the add-in.
Once installed, you will be able to remotely control a machine by choosing
Proxy from the NMS Tools menu.

HP OpenView for Windows Launch Program

To use Proxy from OpenView, HP OpenView for Windows version 7.2 or later must
be installed.

To install the Proxy HP OpenView Launch Program, run SETUP.EXE from the Setup
diskette or the directory to which you copied the add-in.
Once installed, you will be able to remotely control a machine by
double-clicking on its icon or by choosing Proxy from within OpenView's
Control menu.

Automatic Reboot of Workstations

The PHBOOT.EXE program is a DOS TSR application which will automatically
reboot a Proxy Host after a disconnect.

1 Copy the PHBOOT.EXE program from the Proxy Host diskette to your
	Proxy (c:\proxy) directory.

2 Add the following lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

	c:\proxy\phost (runs phost)
	c:\proxy\phboot (sets reboot after disconnect)
