Registration Problems
=====================

We've found that some of our customers are having difficulty with the
registration process due to modem problems. Therefore, we've compiled
the following checklist of things to do on the rare occasion that such
problems are encountered.

Try the three following sets of procedures in order; one of them should
work. If none of them do, please call NETCOM Technical Support at
(408) 983-1510.  We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A.	Check Settings
-- 	--------------

1) Turn your modem off, then on again.

2) Make sure your modem is plugged into a working phone line.

3) In the NetCruiser Modem Setup dialog box, choose your modem from
    the modem list. If you are not certain which modem you have,
    choose Hayes Accura.

    To choose your modem, click on the Modem Settings button
    in the Phone Number dialog box. The Phone Number dialog box
    is the fourth dialog box you see during the registration process.

4) In the NetCruiser Modem Setup dialog box, set the modem speed to
    19,200 baud.

5)  Attempt to register.

B.	Other Programs
--	--------------

1) Make sure you don't have any other communications programs running
    in the background. The best way to do this, if you're not sure,
    is simply to start up Windows Terminal and type "AT"; if "OK" is
    displayed, no other communications programs are running.
    The Windows Terminal program is usually found in the Accessories
    folder from the Program Manager window. Note that fax programs and
    voicemail cards count as communications programs.

2) Disable any such communications programs. Remember to check in the
    Start-up folder for programs that are started autmomatically.

3)  Attempt to register.

C.	System Configuration
--	--------------------

1) Make sure you're using a hardware handshaking cable. These cables
    use pins 1 through 8, and pin 20. If all else fails, you might
    try replacing the cable with a new one. Most computer stores will
    carry these cables.

2) Find the line in your system.ini file that begins:
        comm.drv=

    Change it to read:

        comm.drv=comm.drv

    if it does not already. The system.ini file is in your Windows
    directory.

3) Exit Windows, reboot your computer and modem, and enter NetCruiser
    immediately after restarting Windows.

4)  Attempt to register.

More Information
================

If your problems continue, you may want to set the modem speed in
NetCruiser to 2400 baud, and see if you can register at that speed.
If so, you almost certainly need to review your modem settings; make
sure you've selected the proper modem type in NetCruiser. If you
cannot find your modem in the list of supported modems, Hayes Accura
often works. Failing that, you may need to call your modem vendor
to get the proper initialization string.
