Van Gogh often experimented in portraiture using himself as the model. The first self-portrait of his Paris years was painted in the style of the old masters. Many of his self-portraits were influenced by Impressionism and pointillism, as he searched for his own style. A pattern of thick brush strokes on the canvas became part of his own style.
