                CENTRAL POINT MORE PC TOOLS

This file contains information that is not in the manual or
has changed since the manual was printed. Please take a moment
to read it.

This file is organized into four sections:

   - General Update Information
   - Notes on Specific More PC Tools programs
   - Miscellaneous Compatibility Notes
   - Notes to System Administrators

==============================================================

  GENERAL UPDATE INFORMATION

  * When you run Install, configuration files for the
previous version are stored in the \PCTOOLS\OLDPCT
directory. To restore any of these files, copy them
     back to the \PCTOOLS\DATA directory.

  * The only PC Tools Pro applications included in More PC
Tools are SI Pro and CPR, which is now called
     CrashGuard Pro.

If other PC Tools Pro applications are
on your hard disk, they are retained by More PC Tools
Install. You can still launch them from PC Tools
Desktop/Shell. If you want to delete PC Tools Pro
programs to free disk space, run UNINST9 to
     uninstall them.

  * More PC Tools does not officially support Multi-Config
configurations. This does not mean that you cannot run
More PC Tools applications in a Multi-Config system.
It only means that, depending on the complexity
of your system, you might need to adjust your CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT files after you install More PC Tools
     startup applications.

Please read the README.TXT section for the Install
program and for each application you want to install,
and make sure that you have adjusted load or run lines
appropriately in your Multi-Config files. CrashGuard
Pro information is contained in a separate file,
     CPR.TXT.

  * For the most up-to-date information about new menu
items, command buttons, and dialog boxes, and about
features that might work differently than documented in
the manuals, press F1 in each More PC Tools application
     for online help.

  * Command-line options are listed in each More PC Tools
application chapter in the manual. To display a list
of command-line options on the screen, type /? after
the program name at the DOS prompt.

NOTES ON SPECIFIC MORE PC TOOLS PROGRAMS

  BackTrack
  ---------

  * BackTrack is installed to run just before any menuing or
Windows program. Menuing or Windows programs recognized
    by Install include
       DV PCSHELL
       DVX XDV
       MENU WIN
       NCC

If no menuing or Windows programs run from the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, BackTrack is installed at the end
    of the file.

  * To run BackTrack from Windows, you can add it as a new
program item to the More PC Tools program group. If
you intend to run BackTrack in a DOS box instead of
    a full-screen DOS window, add the /NF command-line
option to the program item command line. /NF instructs
BackTrack not to use PC Tools graphics fonts, which are
    not supported in DOS boxes.

CrashGuard Pro (CPR (Central Point Recuperator))
  -------------------------------

See CPR.TXT for release notes and additional information
      about CrashGuard Pro.

  DriveCheck
  ----------
  * If DriveCheck reports errors during processes that leave
files open for a long period of time, such as serial file
transfers or creating a large PKZip file, permit the
process to continue. Then run DriveCheck from the command
line to determine whether the error still exists.

If this occurs on your system during such file-building
processes, you might prefer to disable DriveCheck during
the process. Enter DC /OFF at the DOS prompt.

  * DriveCheck is installed to run just before any menuing or
Windows program. Menuing or Windows programs recognized
     by Install include
       DV PCSHELL
       DVX XDV
       MENU WIN
       NCC

If no menuing or Windows programs run from the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, DriveCheck is installed at the end
     of the file.

  * DriveCheck calculates file fragmentation by dividing
the number of file fragments in all files on the disk by
the number of assigned clusters. It includes hidden and
system files in the calculation, although these files
are not moved by disk defragmenting applications.

Other applications might use a different method of
calculating fragmentation, and might not include
     hidden and system files.

If hidden and system files are badly fragmented,
     fragmentation levels may stay high.

  *  An undocumented command-line option, /SUPERCHK, changes
the way DriveCheck validates directory structures during
     full tests.

If the first byte of a directory entry is 00, it
indicates that the entry is not used, and DOS
assumes that following entries are also unused. Sometimes
directory entries occur after the byte marking the last
entry, although DOS does not recognize these entries.

To have DriveCheck examine the entire directory cluster
and ensure that there are no actual directory entries
after the entry marked as last, add /SUPERCHK to the
DriveCheck load line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

If such entries are detected, PC Tools DiskFix will
     repair the directory structure.

 DriveSpeed
  ---------------

  * The maximum size of a drive that DriveSpeed can handle is
    504 MB, not 528, using the 1024 x 1024 byte method of
    calculating megabytes.

  * If your computer uses Direct Memory Access (DMA) to transfer
data to and from the drive, DriveSpeed might not work.

  * An older Conner CP3184 drive with firmware revision
2.18 locks if you use the default transfer size of 64
     sectors.

The same problem might occur with an older Maxtor
     drive.

To correct this problem, use the /M32 or /S32 command-
     line when you load DriveSpeed.

  * A DTC SCSI disk controller with an MFM daughter board
incorrectly emulates the IDE command set so that
DriveSpeed thinks it is an IDE drive, but it isn't.

Do not use DriveSpeed with this configuration.

  * DriveSpeed cannot run with caching IDE controller cards.
Your system will lock and you might lose data.

  * DriveSpeed is not compatible with a system configuration
in which the system BIOS translates the IDE drive's
physical geometry. To find out if the drive geometry is
translated, run SI Pro and choose Physical Details
from the Disk menu Drive Details dialog box. Write down
the number of heads and cylinders SI Pro reports.

Then enter DRVSPEED /V at the DOS prompt and note the
number of heads and cylinders reported by DriveSpeed.
If the SI and DriveSpeed information is different,
your drive configuration is not compatible with
     DriveSpeed.

  * If your computer is an ALR Evolution Pentium 60, with a
Phoenix BIOS 1.02.01M (date 5/14/93), DriveSpeed might
not detect your IDE controller. If this occurs, uninstall
     DriveSpeed.

  Install
  -------

  * Install for More PC Tools keeps the PC Tools Pro
version of INSTALL.EXE by renaming it to INSTAL9.EXE.
The PC Tools Pro version of UNINSTAL.BAT is renamed
     UNINST9.BAT.

PC Tools Pro PCCONFIG.EXE is renamed to PCCONFG9.EXE.

  * The PC Tools environment variable is set to the More
PC Tools directory DATA subdirectory when you install
More PC Tools to a different directory from existing
PC Tools applications. This means that older PC Tools
applications will look for .INI and data files in the
More PC Tools DATA subdirectory, and might not work as
you expect. For this reason, we strongly recommend
that you install More PC Tools in the directory
where existing PC Tools applications are installed.

  *  The MS-DOS 6 Multi-Config system lets you select a
system configuration at boot time. We do not
recommend this feature for novice or intermediate
users. If you use Multi-Config, include the More PC
Tools drivers and TSRs you consider essential to all PC
operations in the "common section" of your
     configuration file.

BackTrack and DriveCheck are installed to run just before
any menuing or Windows program. You can add the BACKTRCK
run line before lines that start such programs in sections
     of your Multi-Config AUTOEXEC.BAT.

  * Install might not work properly if you have loaded the
network driver MLMODI into high memory. Load MLMODI into
conventional memory before you run Install.

  * If you are running DR-DOS or a version of MS-DOS
earlier than 5.0, Install searches your drives for the
first AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory. If
Install cannot find the file, it prompts you for the
     location of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  * When Install evaluates your AUTOEXEC.BAT as you configure
Startup Programs during installation, batch files
executed with a CALL command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
are not examined. For example, if your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
contains a line like CALL NET.BAT, which loads your
network drivers, More PC Tools memory-resident programs
might not load in the correct order because Install's
evaluation did not find the network drivers. If this is
the case, temporarily edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to run
the contents of the batch files directly. Then run PC
Config and select the Startup Programs you want. Save the
configuration, and reboot your machine. After you have
rebooted, you can edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to use the
     CALL command.

  * When you install More PC Tools startup programs with PC
Config or the install program, CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
files are modified as described below, depending on the
applications you select to run at startup. (CrashGuard Pro
installation information appears in the manual and
     in CPR.TXT.)

      CONFIG.SYS
      - If you install the SI Pro System Configuration driver
for Plug and Play emulation and assistance, the driver
(DWCFGMG.SYS) is loaded on the first line in CONFIG.SYS.
The /NOLOCK parameter is always added. Unless you have
a PCI bus and a Plug and Play or ACFG BIOS, the /FILE
parameter is also added to the load line.

      AUTOEXEC.BAT
      - The PC Tools environment variable is set at the
beginning of the file, after ECHO statements, if there
        are any.

      - If AUTOEXEC.BAT does not contain a PATH statement, the
directory where you installed More PC Tools is inserted
as a PATH continuation (PATH=C:/PCTOOLS;%path%, for
example), to allow for the possibility of a PATH
        statement in CONFIG.SYS.

      - DriveSpeed and BackTrack lines are added with the
        complete path name.

  * After you have used REGDOS to register your product by
modem, you can delete the registration application files to
     save disk space.

From your More PC Tools directory, delete REGDOS.EXE,
     REGDOS.HLP, REGPRINT.CTL, PIPELINE.INI, SLIDE.INF, and
     PIPEDLG.DAT.

 PC Config
 ---------------

  * Make sure that you choose More Startup Programs
to set up CrashGuard (CPR). If you use PC Tools
Startup Programs to set up CrashGuard, your
BOOTSAFE and VSAFE directory is changed in AUTOEXEC.BAT
to the More PC Tools directory.

If you do set up CrashGuard from the Tools Startup
Programs screen, edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
make sure that the virus detection directory is
     correct.

  * CrashGuard Pro is checked in the application list
if it is already installed and found in your PC Tools
directory. If you leave it checked, PC Config will
     reconfigure CrashGuard Pro.

If you uncheck it because you do not want to reconfigure it,
PC Config will disable CrashGuard Pro and delete the its
saved image files. To re-enable CrashGuard Pro and recreate
the image files, run CPR /SETUP.

 Register
 --------

   * The automatic registration program does not recognize
modems that run at 1200 baud or below. If your modem
can run at 2400 baud or higher, you can use REGDOS
     to register More PC Tools.

 System Information Pro
 ----------------------

  * On systems with a Plug and Play BIOS:

     - Do not use the /FILE switch on the
line that loads DWCFGMG.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS.

     - The System Configuration driver (DWCFGMG.SYS) might
conflict with your memory manager if it operates in
Stealth or Highscan mode. For this reason, DWCFGMG.SYS
is always loaded before the memory manager.

If you change the load order of DWCFGMG.SYS, you might
have problems. You could try running the memory manager
without Stealth or Highscan mode, but it is safer
to load DWCFGMG.SYS before any memory manager.

  * If you have an EISA system, the System Configuration Plug
and Play assistance dialog boxes do not replace the EISA
configuration utility that you can use to add new cards to
     the system.

  * If you have installed Novell DOS 7 and Stacker 4.0,
when DWCFGMG.SYS, the System Configuration driver,
loads, your system will lock, requiring a cold boot.
This problem might be fixed in the future.

  * Some older 286-class and 386-class computers might
exhibit problems with the motherboard tests. Some of
these computers use non-standard chipsets and non-
standard BIOS. Most newer machines conform to a
     standard architecture.

  * If you use a display adapter that has VESA extensions
in the on-board BIOS along with a memory-manager, boot
your computer with your emergency disk when performing
the Super VGA and Color bar tests. The memory manager
tries to use the same memory addresses as the VESA, and
although SI Pro might find the VESA extensions, it
     might perform the tests incorrectly.

  * Super VGA tests may fail on some Trident 8900C 1MB
video boards. This is because the video chipset reports
that a HI-Color DAC (digital to analog converter) is
present when, in fact, the DAC is not capable of
     supporting Hi-Color.

  * Some older BIOS might not show more than two serial
ports (COM 1 and COM 2), even though a third or fourth
might exist. SI Pro reports only ports that are seen by
     the BIOS.

  * The PCM sound test might sound unclear if you run SI
Pro from a floppy disk. This is caused by DMA channel
     conflicts.

   * Modem test problems

Not all modems are fully Hayes-compatible. If your modem
fails the S-Register tests or the Analog Loop-Back tests,
the modem is not necessarily defective. It might not use
     these Hayes commands.

Analog Loop-Back tests are disabled by default. Not all
modems support this test. Your modem might lock up,
requiring you to turn the power switch off and on on
both the machine and the modem.

If you have a Pocket Megahertz modem, run POCKET.EXE to
wake up the modem before you run the SI Pro modem test.
Refer to your modem documentation for information about
     POCKET.EXE.

To avoid the following problems with modem tests, boot
your system clean and perform the tests without the
mouse or other drivers that you do not need for the
     tests themselves.

     - Modem drivers such as FAX software and communication
drivers might interfere with modem diagnostics. Boot
your system without this software before you test the
        modem.

     - The mouse cursor disappears during the modem tests.
If it does not return after the test, exit
from SI Pro and reboot your system. This problem
depends on the mouse manufacturer and driver, but
it is not consistent from machine to machine.

  Uninstall
  ----------

  * To uninstall PC Tools Pro applications, type either
         UNINST9
     or
         INSTAL9
     at the DOS prompt.

Use INSTALL and UNINSTAL to uninstall More PC Tools
     applications only.

If you run INSTALL or UNINSTAL to remove all More PC
Tools applications, a message appears after
uninstallation, telling you that you should next run
UNINST9 if you want to remove PC Tools Pro
     applications.

  * If PCCONFG9.EXE exists, it is renamed to PCCONFIG.EXE
after the More PC Tools PCCONFIG.EXE has been deleted.

MISCELLANEOUS COMPATIBILITY NOTES

  Compaticard Users
  -----------------

  * Compaticards with 2.88MB floppy drives attached are
incompatible with More PC Tools applications.

  DESQview Users
  --------------

  * For optimum performance with DESQview, More PC Tools
applications disable the alternate graphic fonts and
     the graphics mouse cursor.

  * If your video display blinks when you use DESQview with
More PC Tools applications, add the Palette utility to
the DESQview menu and turn off the Blink Enable option.
For the best display when you run More PC Tools
applications from DESQview, select DESQview in the PC
     Config color scheme list.

  DOS APPEND Users
  ----------------

  * The DOS APPEND program has no effect while most PC
     Tools Pro applications are running.

  Logitech Mouse Users
  --------------------

  * The Logitech's mouse driver version 4.10 has known
compatibility problems with DOS 4.0 or later. Upgrade
to the newest mouse driver, version 6.41 or later.

  Microsoft Mouse Driver, version 8.20
  ------------------------------------

  * This version of the Microsoft mouse driver might
cause lockups when you exit from Windows. If you
have this problem, use a different version of the
     mouse driver.

  Packard Bell Mouse Users
  ------------------------

  * The Packard Bell mouse driver version 4.0 is not fully
compatible with More PC Tools. Use the Microsoft Mouse
driver version 6.14 or later instead. (A recent
Microsoft mouse driver is usually included with Windows
     or DOS.)

  PC Tools for Windows Users
  --------------------------

  * If you install CrashGuard, More PC Tools adds the
group file MOREPCT.GRP to the PROGMAN.INI file. If you
use the PC Tools for Windows desktop and you would like
this group file to show up on your desktop, you need to
import the MOREPCT.GRP file. (Pull down the File menu and
select Import.) In rare cases, after importing the group
file, the group may be empty. If this happens to you, do
     the following:

     1) Delete the More PC Tools group from the PC Tools for
        Windows desktop.

     2) Run PROGMAN.EXE from your Windows directory (this can
be done by pulling down the File menu and selecting
        Run).

     3) Once in PROGMAN, open the More PC Tools group and
        close it again.

     4) Exit PROGMAN.

     5) Import the More PC Tools group into the PC Tools for
Windows desktop again. This time, it should contain
        the CrashGuard program item.

  REALTEK VGA Video Card Users
  ----------------------------

  * REALTEK VGA video cards may cause distorted a screen
display in More PC Tools applications. The distortion
is caused by the graphic mouse. To remedy this, choose
Mouse Options in PC Config and deselect the graphics
     mouse cursor.

  SYSGEN Users
  ------------

  * More PC Tools supports the SYSGEN bridge driver
     versions 3.44 and above.

  Toshiba 5100 Laptop Users
  -------------------------

  * If some characters do not appear as expected when you
run More PC Tools applications, run PC Config. Select
Display, Text Mode, and choose OK. Then select Color,
and choose the Toshiba Gas Plasma color scheme. Choose
Save, then reboot the machine so that the changes will
     take effect.

  UltraVision Users
  -----------------

  * More PC Tools applications work with UltraVision fonts,
but disable the Central Point alternative "graphic"
     font set.

  * If your mouse does not function normally when you use
non-standard line modes (modes other than 80x25, 80x28,
80x43, 80x50), disable the Fast Mouse Reset option in
PC Config, or use the /PS2 command-line option when
starting a More PC Tools application.

  NOTES TO SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS

* You can make More PC Tools applications available
to network users if you have bought an equivalent number
of copies or have a site license.

* To create a directory that can be used to install More PC
Tools, copy the More PC Tools installation disk images to
two subdirectories of a network directory that you
create. Then users can start Install from the
subdirectory that contains Disk One, and continue
installation from the subdirectory that contains the
contents of Disk Two, when asked to insert the next disk.
