===============================================================
Microsoft Plus! For Windows 95 Build 214 Release Notes
===============================================================

IMPORTANT ISSUES:
=================
This build of Microsoft Plus! requires Windows 95 build 490 OR HIGHER.

Microsoft Plus! requires a 486 or higher processor, 8MB of memory, and a
display that's capable of displaying at least 256 colors. A high-color
(16-bit) display and sound card are recommended.

If you reinstall MS Plus! your Sage aware app association will be lost.
(i.e. Compagent, Scandisk, and Defrag will lose their Sage specific settings)

If you are prompted for a CD key during Setup, enter the CD-ROM key 003061495

This release of Microsoft Plus! includes the next version of the Microsoft
Network (1.05), which gives you access to the Internet and MSN at the same
time, at modem speeds up to 28.8kbps. At the end of Microsoft Plus! Setup,
the Internet Wizard will walk you through configuring your computer for
Internet/MSN access. During this process you'll be asked to choose an
Internet provider. Select `Use The Microsoft Network'.

In order to receive full access to the MSN 1.05 support forum, you will need
to create a new MSN account. You can access the Internet and MSN using an
existing MSN account, but you will only be able to access the public MSN
1.05 bulletin board ("GO ROMEBBS") for support.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you install a new build of Windows 95 after installing
this build of Microsoft Plus, OR when you install a newer version of
Microsoft Plus!, you MUST re-run the Internet Setup Wizard in order to
update your MSN files. If you are asked if you want to keep your existing
Internet settings, YOU MUST ANSWER NO in order for your files to be updated.

The DriveSpace 3 compression driver requires approximately 107k of
conventional memory. This will not affect the memory available to
MS-DOS applications running under Windows 95, but may affect programs
that run in MS-DOS (real) mode. If you are using DoubleSpace or
DriveSpace, or if you intend to use DriveSpace 3, and you need to run
memory intensive programs in MS-DOS mode, you should:
 - Try increasing conventional memory by using EMM386 NOEMS, and by
   including the following line in your CONFIG.SYS file:

   DEVICEHIGH=C:\<Win95dir>\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE

   (Note: If DRVSPACE.SYS is already being loaded, but is using the
   /L:0 switch, try removing /L:0 if you're certain that your Upper
   Memory Blocks are configured properly.)

 - If you do the above, and still don't have enough memory in MS-DOS
   mode, boot without loading the real-mode compression driver (press
   F8 when you see "Starting Windows...", select the Interactive
   option, and answer N when asked whether you wish to load the
   DriveSpace (or DoubleSpace) driver, and then install the MS-DOS
   mode program to an uncompressed drive.

   (Note: You will not have access to any of your compressed drives
   until you reboot normally.)

If you do not want your existing compression driver updated to
DriveSpace 3, use Custom Setup and uncheck the DriveSpace 3 option.

When selecting a Desktop Theme, be sure to choose a "high-color" theme
only if your system is currenly configured for high-color (16-bit)
display. These themes will not display correctly on 256 color systems.

"Add/Remove, Reinstall, & Remove All" are supported BUT DriveSpace
will NOT be Deinstalled & some files will be left behind.

IF YOU ARE INSTALLING OVER A PREVIOUS VERSION OF MICROSOFT PLUS!:
=================================================================
Your System Agent data base (SAGE.DAT) and settings will be replaced
if you are installing over Microsoft Plus! build 105 or before due to a
format change. If you are using Microsoft Plus! build 106 or later and
already have System Agent installed, SAGE.DAT will NOT be overwritten.

OTHER NOTES:
============
It's OK to upgrade to a later version of Windows 95 after installing
Microsoft Plus!, even if you're using DriveSpace 3 compression. Also,
please note that if you do a CLEAN install of the new build of Windows 95,
you'll also need to reinstall Microsoft Plus!.

If you install a new build of Windows 95 after installing Microsoft Plus!,
your startup logo, shell icons and Recycle Bin icon will be reset to the
Windows 95 defaults. IMPORTANT: If you use MSN 1.05 for Internet access,
you MUST re-run the Internet Setup Wizard after updating to a new build of
Windows 95.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:
===============
Themes
======
- Choosing the "Other..." theme from the drop down list in the Desktop
  Themes program has no effect at this time.

- There is no screen saver currently for the Inside your Computer theme.

Internet Tools
==============
- The Internet access telephone numbers provided by Microsoft for this
  beta are themselves undergoing beta testing. If you find you have
  problems connecting to one of the numbers, please try other numbers
  before reporting a problem.

- The setup application for this beta release will reset any options you
  have changed to default values; you will need to change these back to
  your desired values. Any Beta 1 Internet Shortcuts you have saved will
  still be usable.

- This release contains support for configuring Internet Explorer to
  work with CERN httpd 3.0 and TIS toolkit proxy servers, through the
  Internet Control Panel. If you have already configured Internet
  Explorer using the instructions provided in earlier releases, you
  will need to re-enter your proxy server settings.

- The Dial-Up Networking Autodisconnect feature does not properly sense
  activity during long downloads, for example, FTP-ing a 5MB file. To
  work around this, either turn off Autodisconnect at the Internet Control
  Panel, or set the Autodisconnect idle time to a higher value.

- If you are running Microsoft Network client software on an internal
  TCP/IP-only network, you may experience lengthy timeouts on client
  operations (such as 'net use') if you are connected to the Internet
  via a dial-out connection when you attempt Microsoft Network client
  operations. This is because server name resolution attempts are
  routed to the dial-out connection's DNS server first, and the name
  resolution may take some time to fail.

  Note that this problem occurs only while the Dial-Up Networking
  connection is made; once you hang up you will experience normal
  operations.

  To work around this problem, you should consider installing an
  additional network protocol on your internal network.

About Internet Tools
====================
This release of Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95 contains tools you can
use to explore the Internet and the Microsoft Network, simultaneously.

MSN on The Internet!
====================
Included in this beta of Microsoft Plus! is the next version of The
Microsoft Network. This version of MSN (1.05) gives you access to the
Internet and MSN at the same time, and at modem speeds up to 28.8kbps.

Internet Setup Wizard
=====================
The Internet Setup Wizard ensures your machine is correctly configured
for either a dial-up phone connection or a direct network connection to
the Internet. Before running this Wizard, you must already have:

* The hardware installed (either a modem and phone line
  or a network card and connection).
* Your Windows `95 distribution floppy disks or CD-ROM.

If you choose a dial-up phone connection, you can either set up an MSN
Internet account or use a preexisting PPP Internet service provider account.
The Internet Setup Wizard does not support SLIP accounts.

Choose direct connection if you are connected to a LAN which is connected
to the Internet directly or through a proxy server.

Internet Control Panel
======================
The Internet Control Panel allows you to configure telephone connection
and proxy server settings. Specifically, you can:

* Enable or disable autodialing
* Select the preferred Dial-Up Networking connection for autodialing.
* Create a new Dial-Up Networking connection.
* Edit an existing Dial-Up Networking connection.
* Control telephone autodisconnect parameters
* Specify the server name and port for CERN-compliant proxy servers.

Proxy server support is only for people who have direct connections to
networks connected to the Internet through a proxy or firewall server.
The syntax for specifying a proxy server address includes both machine
name and port number; for example: http://proxy.mydom.com:80.

Internet Explorer
=================
Microsoft Internet Explorer is an integrated browsing tool for the
World Wide Web, Gopher, and FTP. Features include:

* Highly optimized performance with asynchronous graphics
  downloading and progressive rendering -- great for modem users.

* "Favorites" menu: remembers your favorite pages on the
  Internet, can contain folders as well as shortcuts, and is
  extremely easy to customize.

* "Persistent Cache": stores the pages you view so you
  can visit them later, even when not connected to the Internet.

* "AutoDial": dials the Internet automatically whenever a
  connection is needed.

* Win95-style user interface: features context menus and
  easy-to-set Options

* Drag & drop support: you can drag text, shortcuts, and
  images directly from Internet Explorer to other
  applications.

* Right mouse context menus.

* Supports Internet, LAN, and filesystem browsing with equal ease.

Setting Up Your Internet Connection
===================================
At the end of the Microsoft Plus! Setup program, the Internet Setup
Wizard will run. If you are not yet ready to use the Wizard, you
may click Cancel, then launch the Wizard at a later time from the
Start Menu:
  Start => Programs => Accessories => Internet Tools => Internet Wizard.

The Internet Setup Wizard supports three kinds of users: Microsoft
Network customers, people with pre-existing PPP dial-in accounts,
and people with LAN access to the Internet (either direct or
through a proxy server).

Microsoft Network users (both existing and new accounts):
=========================================================
With this release, you can create and use a Microsoft Network (MSN)
account which allows you access to both the Internet and MSN. To
set up the account, run the Internet Setup Wizard, choose `Connect
using my phone line', and then `Use The Microsoft Network'. The
rest of the installation process will set up your machine with all
of the necessary software and information to access MSN and the Internet.

If you already have a MSN account, you should create a new account
using the Internet Setup Wizard, in order to properly establish the
permissions needed to access the MSN Beta support forum.

How to Get Support

Support for MSN 1.05 will be provided online on MSN. To access the
MSN 1.05 Beta Forum, click the Edit menu, point to Go To, click
Other Location, and type ROME, or, in MSN Central, click Member
Assistance, double-click MSN Beta Center, double-click MSN Technical
Beta Forum, and then double-click MSN 1.05 Beta Forum. You will find
a support bulletin board, a scheduled chat, and a frequently asked
questions file. Please check the "Please Read" posting in the
support bulletin board.

If you are using an account that was created previously, you can
still get to the support bulletin board by using the Go word ROMEBBS.
This bulletin board allows public access. The rest of the the
MSN 1.05 Beta Forum will be unavailable unless you use your account
created with MSN 1.05.

NOTE: If you are unable to connect via the Internet access number,
connect to MSN using your local non-Internet number and post your
connection problem information in the support bulletin board in the
MSN 1.05 Beta Forum. To do this, double-click the MSN icon on your
desktop, click Settings, click Access Numbers and for the primary
phone number, click Change. In the Type of Phone Number box, select
The Microsoft Network, and then select a local phone number.

If you are unable to connect using your local non-Internet phone
number, we have set up an emergency voicemail number (206 936-6947).
Please only use this number if you can't connect to MSN using either
type of phone number - all other support issues should be handled
online. Please leave your name, telephone number, the best time to
reach you, and a brief but detailed description of the problem you
are experiencing.

Dial-up PPP users:
==================
If you have an account already with another Internet service provider,
and want to use it instead of The Microsoft Network, then before
running the Internet Setup Wizard, you'll need to gather the following
information:

* Your service provider's name
* The number you dial to reach them
* Your username and password
* The IP address of your DNS server or servers. (You may
  need to call your service provider for this one.)

If your Internet service provider supports POP/SMTP mailboxes and
you want to use Microsoft Exchange for your Internet email, you'll also
need:
* Your email name and password
* The address of your email server

LAN users:
==========
Your LAN must already be connected to the Internet, or you must have
a CERN-compliant proxy server connecting your LAN to the Internet. If
you know that it is, you can configure Internet access through it.
Gather the following information (which may require a call to your
network administrator):

* The IP address of your DNS server or servers (you may
  specify a main and alternate server).
* The IP address of the Internet gateway computer on your
  network (if any).
* If you're using a proxy server, you'll need the http:
  hostname and port; for example: http://proxy.mydom.com:80

If you have a POP/SMTP mailbox accessible on your LAN and you wish
to use Microsoft Exchange for your Internet email, you'll also need:
* Your email name and password
* The address of your email server

Proxy support is configured by opening the Internet Control Panel
after running the Internet Setup Wizard, and choosing the `Proxy'
dialog tab.
