This is the README.TXT file for the HP Copier utility program for
HP ScanJet scanner. It provides suggestions for using HP Copier
that are not included in the product documentation.

8. How to remove HP Copier from your computer

1. What to do if HP Copier prints blank pages
----------------------------------------------

    HP ColorSmart(tm) Drivers have an "Automatic" mode which is
    incompatible with HP Copier and will yield blank pages. Setting the
    "Printout" setting to anything except "Automatic" will give proper
    results. Setting this setting to "Black Text" will give the quickest
    copies with this driver.

    If your HP ScanJet Scanner is equipped with an optional Automatic
    Document Feeder (ADF), a blank page may be the result of leaving a page
    on the scanner glass while attempting to copy a page in the ADF. To
    solve this problem, simply remove the page from the scanner glass, then
    proceed to make copies from the pages in the ADF.

    Some other older printer drivers produce blank pages when used with
    HP Copier. Upgrading to a newer version of the printer driver for your
    particular printer may solve this problem.

2. What to do if HP Copier prints bar code type output
-------------------------------------------------------

    Some older printer drivers produce a "bar-code" type output at the top
    of some pages. In the "Options" dialog, there might be a setting for
    "Graphics Mode". Setting this to "Raster" may solve the problem. If
    not, then upgrading to a newer version of the printer driver for your
    particular printer may solve this problem also.

3. How to adjust the default brightness of HP Copier
-----------------------------------------------------

    HP Copier can be adjusted for the variations that exist in different
    printers. After running the HP Copier program at least once, a file
    is created in the Windows directory called "HPCOPIER.INI". It will
    have information like the following (Some of the numbers might be
    different):

        [Position]
        Left=49
        Top=53

        [Counter]
        TotalCount=10
        LastCount=2

        [ToneMap]
        Text=0
        Photo=0
        TextPhoto=0

    In the section labeled "ToneMap" you may change the values to adjust
    the brightness for the various types of copies. A positive number will
    lighten the copies, while a negative number will darken the copies. A
    value of 10 or 15 is as much change as any printer should require, but
    larger changes can be tried.

4. If HP Copier doesn't capture all of the information you wanted from a
    page
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

    When a copy is made and printed to a LaserJet printer, the printer is
    unable to print to the edge of the paper; there is a 1/4 inch margin on
    all edges. (Other printers may have margins of different sizes.) While
    most pages copied do not have information in this area, some pages do.
    If there was information in this area of your original that you wish to
    be included in the copy, try a combination of moving the original page
    away from the edge of the scanner glass and setting the scaling to be
    slightly smaller than 100%. In this way you will be able to see the
    entire page on your copy.

5. HP Copier does not print landscape
--------------------------------------

    For speed and simplicity reasons, HP Copier forces all pages to be
    printed in the portrait orientation, even though most printer drivers
    have a landscape orientation option. In order to get copies of your
    originals printed in the landscape orientation on the printed output,
    either turn your original on the scanner glass, or use HPPictureScan
    to scan your original and HPPicturePlace Editor to rotate and print it.

6. Using HP Copier with Fax software
-------------------------------------

    Any fax software which is installed as a printer driver and connected
    to a fax modem may be used with HP Copier to send quick and easy faxes.
    Simply click on the Setup button on the front panel of the HP Copier
    program and select the fax printer driver as your selected printer.
    In the fax printer driver options, select fine resolution. Standard
    resolution will result in distorted pages.

7. What to do if the error message "Unable to load the library
    (ACCUPAGE.DLL)" appears.
---------------------------------------------------------------

    There is a known compatibility problem between HP Copier,
    HP Accupage and the HP LaserJet program called HP Status
    Window. If HP Copier gives you the error message "Unable
    to load the library (ACCUPAGE.DLL)" and your system has
    the Status Window application for an HP LaserJet, then you
    will need to close the Status Window in order to use HP
    Copier. You may keep the Status Window from running in any
    future Windows sessions by removing it. This is accomplished
    by double-clicking on the "Remove Status Window" program icon
    in the "HP Laserjet" group in Program Manager. You may
    manually remove it by using NOTEPAD to edit WIN.INI. Delete
    "hpsw.exe" from the line that starts with "load=".

    If HP Status Window is not running on your system, and
    the error message still occurs, then closing other
    applications or removing other programs from "load=" and
    "run=" lines in WIN.INI could solve the problem.

8. How to remove HP Copier from your computer
----------------------------------------------

    To remove HP Copier, delete the following files from the directory
    that HP Copier was installed into:

        ACCUPAGE.DLL
        ANIBUTON.VBX
        APLIB1.DLL
        APLIB2.DLL
        APSL .EXE
        GAUGE.VBX
        HPCOPIER.EXE
        HPCOPIER.HLP
        HPCOPIER.TXT
        HPSCANER.DLL
        SG5W30.DLL
        THREED .VBX

    Then, from the WINDOWS directory, delete the following file:

        HPCOPIER.INI

    You're done! HP Copier has been removed from your system.
