Installing QuickTOPiX for Windows
----------------------------------
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE DONE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE INSTALLING QUICKTOPIX

 1) Install the ADAPTEC HOST ADAPTER CARD.

NOTE: To increase performance, the ROM BIOS on the Host Adapter can
be disabled. EZ-SCSI will load ASPI4DOS.SYS and ASPIDISK.SYS
to replace the ROM BIOS. This will prevent using the SCSI
drive as the bootable	disk drive.

 2) Install the ADAPTEC EZ-SCSI for DOS/WINDOWS software.

 3) Install the SOFTWARE LOCK. See "Connect the Software Lock" in the
    User Guide.

Insert the diskette into a 3.5" floppy drive. If that drive is drive A:,
then type "A:SETUP" and press Enter. Likewise, if the diskette is in drive
B:, then type "B:SETUP" and press Enter. The installation program will
launch Windows and then display the setup screen. If you are already in
Windows, use the Program manager FILE and RUN menu items to run the
SETUP.EXE program on the diskette. The installation program will check your
computer for the required hardware and software and then set up your system
appropriately. Further, the changes that are required to be made to your
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files will be displayed and you will be asked to
approve the changes before they are made. The original system files are
backed up in AUTOEXEC.xx and CONFIG.xx files where xx is between 01 and 99.

Most installations will then require that you exit Windows and reboot the
computer so that the changes to the system will take effect.

Installer Problems
------------------
The following problems have been found in the installation software:

 - Several situations may arise where a device driver (specifically,
ASPISCSI.SYS) used by QuickTOPiX for Windows does not get added to the
CONFIG.SYS file. This may happen if the Adaptec driver ASPIDISK.SYS is
not found in the CONFIG.SYS or if you select a directory other than the
directory recommended by the installer for the report files during
installation. After running the installer, check the CONFIG.SYS file
for a line that is similar to:

DEVICE=C:\QTOPIX\ASPISCSI.SYS

where "C:\QTOPIX" is the installation drive and path. If this statement is
not in your CONFIG.SYS file, it must be added manually. Edit CONFIG.SYS
with the DOS EDIT command or other text editor. Add the line shown above
anywhere after the line that contains ASPI4DOS.SYS, ASPI2DOS.SYS or
ASPIEDOS.SYS.

 - If your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains more than one PATH statement, you
may need to edit the file manually to make sure the QuickTOPiX for Windows
directory appears there. To determine if the PATH statement contains the
correct entries, reboot your system and type PATH at the DOS prompt.
If the QuickTOPiX directory is not listed in the line displayed by the
PATH command, edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and add an entry for the
QuickTOPiX directory to the PATH line.

For example:
PATH=C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\QTOPIX

- Corel CD-ROM extensions (CORELCDX) are not compatible with the Microsoft
CD-ROM Extensions. If you are using the Philips CDD 521 or the Kodak PCD
200 as a CD-ROM reader, the installation program will add MSCDEX to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. However, MSCDEX will not install if CORELCDX is already
loaded. See the Corel documentation.

After Installation
------------------
After installing the program, you must exit Windows and reboot your computer
before running QuickTOPiX for Windows. This will allow any changes the
installer made to the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT system files to take
effect. If you told the installer not to make the requested changes or
made example files, you must make these changes manually.

If the installer made the system file changes for you, the original files
were saved. The installer renames the file, changing the extension to a
two character number. This number is incremented each time the installer is
run so that you will always have a copy of the original files. For example,
the first time you run the installer, the original CONFIG.SYS file is
renamed to CONFIG.01.

After rebooting your computer, you can start the program by simply double
clicking on the "QuickTOPiX" icon in the "QuickTOPiX" group in the
Program Manager.

Drag-N-Drop
-----------
QuickTOPiX for Windows has been designed to be used with the Windows File
Manager. A user can employ the File Manager to organize the data that is
to be recorded to a CD into a folder. Then the user can select and drag the
folder, from the right hand side of the File Manager window, onto a
QuickPrint icon. When the user releases the mouse button (drop), QuickTOPiX
is launched. QuickPrinters also provide a means for creating a template
with any of the program features enabled or disabled.

A QuickPrinter named "Sample Drag-n-Drop" appears in the QuickTOPiX Group.
When you launch the QuickPrinter, a spinning icon will appear on your
desktop. If you then drag a folder or an image file from the File Manager
onto the icon, the QuickPrinter will launch QuickTOPiX with the SAMPLE
template. This template will output the file or folder to an image file in
the directory you choose during installation.

By clicking once on the QuickPrinter icon, you can bring up a menu. Three
items appear in addition to the usual system menu items:
 - "Stays on top" will keep the QuickPrinter icon on top of everything else
on the screen. This is useful if you want to maximize the File Manager
and still be able to use the QuickPrinter.
 - "Animate" controls whether or not the icon spins.
 - "About..." brings up an about box describing QuickPrinters.

QuickPrinters will stop spinning if QuickTOPiX is running. The QuickPrinter
that launched QuickTOPiX will also turn gray as long as QuickTOPiX runs.
If you have several QuickPrinters on your desktop at once, this allows you
to determine at a glance which launched QuickTOPiX. See "Creating and
Using QuickPrinters" in the User Guide for more	information.

Changing the QuickTOPiX configuration
----------------------------------------------
The names of the subdirectories QuickTOPiX for Windows uses for temporary
files, report files and preferences are stored in the file QT.INI. This is
a text file stored in the same directory as the QT.EXE executable file.
To change the directories used, edit the file with the DOS program EDIT or
with any text editor program. In it, you will find:

[Environment]
OMITEMP=E:\TMP
OMIREPORT=C:\QTOPIX
OMIPREF=C:\QTOPIX

The actual directories will be those chosen during the installation. These
may be changed as necessary. For example, if you are currently using a RAM
drive for the temporary files and you need to prepare a project with a very
large number of files, you may change the temporary directory to a hard
disk by going to the line that starts "OMITEMP=" and entering a new
subdirectory name after the equals sign. In a similar fashion, you may
change the report files directory by changing the line that starts with
"OMIREPORT=". Normally, you would not change the preferences directory.

Memory Managers
---------------
QuickTOPiX for Windows is designed to work with the memory manager software
(HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE) provided with Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0. Problems
may arise if this package is used with third party memory managers. As with
any installation process, you are advised to have a bootable floppy diskette
available in case a software incompatibility prevents booting from the hard
disk.

Manual Discrepancies
--------------------
The user manual incorrectly states that the extension used by template files
is `.TPL'. The actual template extension is `.QT'.

User Interface Discrepancies
----------------------------
If you specify a source but no target or a target but no source, the
QuickTOPiX Status box will display "Ready" after attempting to Test or
Record.

The TRUNCATE invalid file names option under ISO 9660 Configuration will
take no action since DOS does not permit file names longer than 8 characters
with a 3 character extension.

Aborting Program Operation
--------------------------
Use the ESC key to abort any program operation such as PREPARE, TEST or
RECORD.

ISO 9660 File System Discrepancies
----------------------------------
The ISO 9660 specification allows up to 128 characters in the Primary
Volume Descriptor Volume Set, Publisher, Data Preparer and Application
Identifiers. QuickTOPiX will not accept more characters than can be
displayed in the fields (approximately 60 characters). If QuickTOPiX must
translate a long identifier, the notice displayed in the Status window may
wrap around to the top of the Status window. This does not affect the
actual data stored in the volume descriptor.

Subdirectory Limit
------------------
This version of QuickTOPiX for Windows has a worst case limit of 4096
subdirectories per CD. If short directory names are used, the actual limit
will be higher.

Installation Limit
------------------
As mentioned above, the installer automatically makes backups of any system
files modified during installation. This includes CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT,
PROGMAN.INI and QT.GRP. The installer saves the old version with a two
digit extension, .01 to .99. The installer will fail to work properly after
100 installations on the same machine. If you encounter this situation,
delete some of the backup files and try the installation again.
