          HP DeskScan II Information
----------------------------------------------

 This document contains general information about
  the HP DeskScan II application but primarily
  it documents issues discovered or resolved after
  the documentation was printed.

 Topics discussed in this document include:

	* Changes the installer makes to:
	     -AUTOEXEC.BAT
	     -CONFIG.SYS
	     -SYSTEM.INI
	     -DESKSCAN.INI
	* Windows NT support
	* OS/2 support
	* How to remove DeskScan II
	* How to install DeskScan II with Norton Desktop
	* How to upgrade from an earlier version of DeskScan
	* How to control the I/O space reserved for SJIIX.SYS
	* Scaling images scanned with a transparency adapter

--------------------------------------------------
 Changes to AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and SYSTEM.INI

  1) Adds the directory where DeskScan II is installed
   to the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
   For example:

	PATH=C:\DOS;C:\DESKSCAN;

  2) Adds drivers to the CONFIG.SYS file. If you are
   installing the HP SCSI card it adds:

	DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\MINI400I.SYS
	DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJIIX.SYS

  If you want to use a SCSI card (ASPI or CAM)
  that is already installed in you computer
  the DeskScan installer adds only:

	DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\SJIIX.SYS

 3) Adds the following statements to the SYSTEM.INI file
  (under the [386Enh] section) if you are running
  WINDOWS 3.1:

	device=C:\DESKSCAN\WIN400I.386
	device=C:\DESKSCAN\HPSCANR.386

 4) Copies the following files to the backup
 reference diskette:

	MCA 	@631F.ADF
	EISA	!HWP2080.CFG

Installer problems

If you add a new Program Manager Group for DeskScan,
 do not use parenthesis or square brackets as part
 of the name for the group.

--------------------------------------------------
Removing DeskScan II from your computer

Read UNINSTAL.TXT in the \DESKSCAN directory to find
 all the changes to your system files caused by
 installing the DeskScan II program.

--------------------------------------------------
To install with Norton Desktop

If you are running MicroSoft Windows using Norton
 as the shell, you must change the shell to PROGMAN.EXE
 before installing the DeskScan software.

How to change the shell:

   - Run Windows NOTEPAD and open the SYSTEM.INI file
	 which is in the \WINDOWS directory.
    - In the [boot] section you will find a line that reads
       shell=ndw.exe
    - Make a copy of this line and insert a ";" [semicolon]
	as the first character in the first copy.
    - Change the second copy to read:
        shell=progman.exe
    - Restart Windows
-------------------------------------------------
To upgrade from an earlier version of DeskScan

The DeskScan II, version 2.0, installer automatically
 upgrades earlier versions of DeskScan software.

Version 2.0 includes an HP ScanJet driver for ASPI and
 CAM SCSI cards. You can use the drivers only with the
 HP ScanJet IIc, IIcx, or IIp scanners.

If you already have an ASPI or CAM SCSI card,
 the new drivers provide the advantages of using
 one less interface card slot and using less
 expansion ROM memory space.

When you upgrade to version 2.0, the existing
 DESKSCAN.INI file is saved as DESKSCAN.BAK.
 If you have calibrated print paths that you
 want to save from the previous version of DeskScan,
 you can recover them from the DESKSCAN.BAK file.
--------------------------------------------------
Controlling the I/O space reserved for SJIIX.SYS

The HP ScanJet IIcx uses a new SCSI interface card
 that automatically re-configures itself when another
 adapter card is put in the system. The IIcx card uses
 one on the following I/O spaces for data transfer:

              280     330
              290     340
              300     348
              310     350

If you want to choose the I/O space MINI400I.SYS uses,
add the following command line option:

   DEVICE=C:\DESKSCAN\MINI400I.SYS /SETADDR=<I/O space>

Where <I/O space> is one the above mentioned spaces.

--------------------------------------------------
Scaling images scanned with a transparency adapter

The HP ScanJet IIcx scanner supports scanning from a
 transparency adapter.

Under some circumstances while scaling an image
 minor defects common to all CCD scanners may become
 more noticeable.

If you are confronted with this problem, scan the image
 at 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 600, or 800 dpi. Then,
 transform the image to the desired resolution by "resampling"
 the image with an image editor, such as Aldus PhotoStyler
 or Adobe PhotoShop.
