             IMPORTANT GEAR INFORMATION FOR YOU...

Thank you for your order!

We have enclosed two extra GEAR batch utilities on this
diskette which you receive free of charge.
These can be used in combination with the GEAR software you
ordered or as stand alone products. The following section
explains how to use these extra utilities.

tree2cdr <volume_name> <tree_spec> [/e]

The parameter 'volume_name' specifies the name for the future
CD-ROM disc. The parameter 'tree_spec' specifies the name of
the DOS directory tree that will be written to CD-R disc. Each
file and directory in this directory will formatted according
to the ISO-9660 specification and copied to a CD-ROM image.
After the formatting this CD-ROM image is written to CD-R
disc. During the formatting process the generator parameters
as specified in the GEAR.INI will be used. There is no need
for extra hard disk space since GEAR uses a so-called virtual
image approach. This means that the extra disk space needed is
only 1-3% of the total space occupied by the files which are
copied to CD-R.
The 'e' option, if present, specifies that the performance of
the computer system must be estimated for writing the given
directory tree to CD-R disc. In case the performance is
sufficient you can write the image to CD-R disc. Otherwise you
can use a disk optimization program to minimize the
fragmentation on your hard disk and estimate again.

hd2cdr <Target-ID> <SizeInBlocks> [<StartBlock> [<file>]] [/e]
[/noc]

The parameter Target ID specifies the device number of the
SCSI hard disk.
The parameter SizeInBlocks specifies the number of 512 bytes
blocks that will be written from hard disk to CD-R disc. The
size of the hard disk in megabytes must be smaller than 650
(the maximum CD-R capacity) and also be smaller than the
actual size of the hard disk.
The optional parameter StartBlock specifies at which block the
software should start copying the hard disk. A block size of
512 bytes is assumed for StartBlock. When this parameter is
omitted block 0 is used as starting block. The parameter
StartBlock is mostly used in combination with the parameter
file. The parameter parameter file specifies which file should
be written to the hard disk prior to the hard disk data. The
file size must be a multiple of 2048 bytes! This can be used
for instance to change the information of the first 2048 bytes
of the hard disk. E.g (assuming label is 2048 bytes large)

hd2cdr 1 614400 4 label

will first write the file 'label' to the CD-R, then it will
skip the first 4 blocks of the hard disk and finally write
614400 blocks of 512 bytes (300 Mb) of the hard disk.
If the parameter file is specified, the parameter StartBlock
must also be specified.

The parameter /e (optional) can be used to measure if the
performance of your system is sufficient for writing the hard
disk to CD-R disc.

The parameter /noc (optional) can be used to enable the
NOConfirm mode. In that case the software will assume the
default values for all parameters and will not wait for user
input. In this mode the software assumes that a disc is loaded
in the CD-Recorder.

Both utilities use a GEAR.INI and GEAR.MSG file as delivered
with the DOS software. Please see the DOS manual about the
usage of these files.
                             NOTE

If you want to use the hd2cdr program you have to add the
following line to the [cdrecording] section of the GEAR.INI
file:

QuickDMAUsed=FALSE

Only add this line for the hd2cdr program!
