A list of telnet sites available on the Internet, compiled with
the help of Auggie BBS (bbs.augsburg.edu) and dozens of
			   brave net riders.

                       (C) Copyright 1993 CC May.
This document may be copied and distributed freely, provided...

                                  and
b) It is not used for commerce or the purpose of making money.
Unless I get some kind of small royalty. After all, in my spare time
   I'm a college student. :)
                 Entries are as follows:

2................ Freenets and Public Access UNIX
3................ For-Pay BBSs
4................ FTP sites!
5................ Other services and tips
(Hey, no one ever accused me of being an ASCII artist. :)
This is a list of services, often made possible by volunteers who
usually go unthanked. If you see anyone who does this sort of thing,
thank them.
Also, whatever you do, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HACK ANYTHING ON
THE INTERNET! The hacking that has been done on the Internet has caused
a great many BBSs and other sites to go down forever, and others have
taken steps at making this net a little less friendly than it is now.
(e.g., Nyx.) These BBSs do not have to be here. However, they still exist
and literally thousands use them each day. Don't hack them, or what we now
have will be history. Well, that said, on with the show...

CC's WISH LIST
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
-An encyclopedia. There are dozens of encyclopediae (is that right? My Latin
is a little rusty. :) on CD-ROM, and just one would do a world of good for
college students.
Anyone with wishes for the Internet, feel free to mail me.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
COKE MACHINES ON THE INTERNET
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The latest in hacker trends. :)
Actually, they've been around for a little while now...
These are actual Coke and M & M machines connected to the Internet,
and when fingered, provide you with the amount of soft drinks held within.
I doubt you could hack 'em, anyway... and if you could, how would you get
the product? :)
These are just interesting, so I put them in. Enjoy.

Citadel is a message-only system.
Boards using this are highly active with the exchange of messages
in various "rooms", sometimes as varied as MST3K>, NetLife>, and
Spam! Spam! Spam!>. Plenty of information can be had on these boards,
though no files are available.
Another feature of these boards is that each one has added a little
flavor to the stock Citadel code, so none of them are quite the same.

FREENETS AND PUBLIC ACCESS UNIX

Freenets are fairly new to the Internet.
These services often have Telnet, full email, USA Today news and
weather, and are typically set up like 'cities'. Registration is (as the
name implies) free, but usually require a snail-mailed form.
In much the same idea, a few boards have been set up for the public to use
UNIX at no cost.

FTP SITES!
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
I've had so many users ask me if I make a list of FTP sites that I've
decided to make a list of FTP sites. Service with a smiley face. :)
However, I'm not going to list FTP sites by platform. It'd be too large,
and I'd be stepping on the toes of others who make lists of FTP sites.
I'm limiting my list to sites that have important text files, such as
Project Gutenberg or the Online Book Initiative (see world.std.com.).
For those of you who don't know how to FTP:
The command is like this:
To FTP Project Gutenberg...
ftp mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu
Once you are prompted for a login, do this:
On a UNIX, type anonymous.
On a VAX, type login anonymous.
Your password is your email address. It's a courtesy to the FTP server
to do this. Get used to it or make a macro.
List the contents of directories by hitting 'ls' or 'dir'.
If you use 'dir', you can tell which are directories by looking at the
far left. If the first letter at the far left is a d, it's a directory.
Otherwise, it's a file.
Change directories by hitting 'cd directoryname', where
directoryname is the name of the directory.
To get a non-text file (.ZIP, .Z, .sea, .LHA, .tar...), type bin before
the next step.
To get a file from the server to your account, type get filename.
Sometimes it takes a while. That's life.
Getting it from your account to your computer is someone else's problem.
:)

ftp mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu
Project Gutenberg. The project is trying to distribute 1 trillion
volumes within a decade. Dozens of books have already been translated
into plain-vanilla text. Files are in /pub/etext.

ftp world.std.com
Online Book Initiative in /obi. Another very big site for text files.
All sorts of classic books and information.
Also, the Online Bookstore in /OBS. This will soon become a commercial
service where you pay for new books in plain-text form.

ftp wiretap.spies.com
Just look around. It's pretty self-explanatory.

ftp ftp.eff.org
The Electronic Frontiers Foundation site. Lots of text files on the
organization and legal questions about cyberspace.

Prodigy: Latest info:
Prodigy now says it will offer an add-on service with access
to the Internet. Price is rumored to be an extra $4-5 a month.
Don't quote me. There is also a prodigy.com subdomain, so it
should be coming in the next couple of months.

This is by no means a complete list of the sites and services on the
Internet. It is, however, a good place to start. If you have any sites that
you would like added, please send them to me.

Also:
This list is available 6 ways (just keeps getting bigger, don't it?):
-By mailing bbslist@aug3.augsburg.edu (no subject or body necessary). This
will send 3 lists (including this one) to your mailbox.
-On Auggie BBS in its InternetBBS board.
-By FTP: on aug3.augsburg.edu, as files/bbs_lists/nal005.txt
-In the <B>ulletins menu on Grind (grind.isca.uiowa.edu, 128.255.40.200,
login iscabbs).
-In the bulletins section and the file area of Thunderstorm BBS in Flagstaff,
AZ. v.32bis, access on first call, running Maximus/CBCS 2.00.
Phone number is (602)556-0999, and CC is the Co-SysOp. Free, too.
-On Simtel-20 and its mirrors, an executable version for IBMs and
compatibles, with word search, packaged with the list in text form,
will be released once a month as nal005.zip.
