MODEMS NOT FOUND ON OUR LIST OF DESCRIPTORS
===========================================
From time to time, there may be new modems released by various
manufacturers which are not included on our list of modems. This is because
these modems were not available to us at the time that this product was
released. In addition, there may be updates to existing modem descriptors which
have been made since this product was released.

If you are using a modem which does not appear on our list of modems,
you must call our Technical Support BBS at (617) 762-5134. The BBS is
available 24 hours per day, seven days a week. You may use Carbon Copy Terminal,
or any terminal emulation package to dial the BBS. Configure Carbon Copy Terminal
for Hayes 2400, and configure the port settings to 8 data bits, no Parity
and 1 Stop Bit. This should get you connected temporarily to get the updated
modem file.

There are five modem files included with this release of
Carbon Copy. The files are:
MCMODEM.DSC - Modem file use with Carbon Copy for Windows 2.5
MODEMS.DAT - Modem file used with Carbon Copy Terminal
MODEMS.MLD - Modem file used with Carbon Copy Gateway
MODINDEX.DAT - Modem file used with Carbon Copy Gateway
CCDMODEM.DSC - Modem file used with Carbon Copy for DOS support

You will find these files located under the Carbon Copy for Windows
menu on the Technical Support BBS. For additional assistance, please
contact our Technical Support staff at (617) 551-1414.

USING THE LAN IPX DRIVER
===================================
Carbon Copy 2.5 has been significantly enhanced from earlier versions
of Carbon Copy. When connecting Carbon Copy 2.5 using the LAN (IPX) driver,
the remote PC must be running Carbon Copy 2.1 or later.

CARBON COPY GATEWAY SERVER
===========================

Installing Multiple Gateway Servers
==========================
If you are installing multiple Gateway Servers on a network,
the Server Name must be unique for each server. Use GATECFG.EXE
to configure the Server Name for each server.

Running Applications on the Carbon Copy Gateway Server
==========================================
Carbon Copy Gateway is a non-dedicated server that allows other
applications to run on the same PC. There are some applications that
may affect the PC's ability to function as a Gateway Server, such
as applications that are CPU intensive or applications that access
the serial port. Also, since the Gateway Server uses the network,
running applications on the Gateway Server PC that use the network
may also affect the PC's ability to function as a Gateway.
These are not limitations of the Gateway Server, but rather the PC itself.

Running the Carbon Copy Gateway Server on IPX or NetBIOS Networks
=====================================================
Carbon Copy Gateway can be run on IPX or NetBIOS type networks.
To configure the Server properly, you MUST specify the .CFG file for the
network type. For example, at the DOS command prompt type either:
     GATECFG GATEIPX.CGF
          or
     GATECFG GATENETB.CFG

Workstation Names with Underscores
============================
When calling into a Gateway Server, the workstation names
appearing in the listbox may have underscores. This is normal.
NCSI replaces spaces in the workstation name with underscores.

CFG File Not Found
===============
If the message "CFG file not found" is displayed when executing
GATEIPX, GATENETB, or GATECFG make sure the .CFG file is in the
same directory as the executables. If they are not in the same
directory, expand the file off the Carbon Copy diskettes or
from an Administrative installation on a network. For more
information on expanding files, see the section "Copying Files
from the Carbon Copy for Windows Disks" in this document.

Increasing the NCBS Parameter
=======================
When using the Gateway on a NetBIOS compatible network, you should increase
the NCBS parameter on the Gateway Server PC as well as the Carbon Copy
workstation by 10. For example, if NCBS is currently set to 10, increase it to 20.
If you later install other applications that use NCBS, be sure you increase this
parameter again.

If you plan to run Windows on the Gateway Server PC while the Gateway is
in memory, you should add the following line to the [386Enh] section of the
Windows SYSTEM.INI file:
COMXBUFFER=3200
Where X is the serial port for which the Gateway is configured.

CARBON COPY TERMINAL
=====================
Carbon Copy Terminal fully supports baud rates up to 115200.
However, the Windows serial port driver does not support
baud rates above 57600. To use Carbon Copy Terminal at a
baud rate of 115200, an enhanced serial port card with a 16550 UART
and a communications driver that supports 115200 must be installed.

COPYING FILES FROM THE CARBON COPY FOR WINDOWS DISKS
====================================================
The files on the Carbon Copy for Windows installation disks are compressed.
The files are not usable until they are expanded. Setup expands the
compressed files as they are copied onto your hard disk.

If you need to copy files directly from a Carbon Copy for Windows disk
without using Setup, follow these steps:

  1. Copy EXPAND.EXE (located in the \INSTALL directory) from the
     Carbon Copy Setup Disk onto your hard drive. (This utility expands
     compressed files to a usable format.)

  2. Insert the disk with the file you want to expand into drive
     A: (or any floppy-disk drive).

  3. Type the following and press ENTER:

        EXPAND A:path\<filename> C:<filename>

     where A: is the disk drive you are copying from (source)
           C: is the disk drive you are copying to (destination)

     The compressed file is expanded as it is copied onto your
     hard-disk drive.

INFORMATION NOT FOUND IN THE USER GUIDE
=======================================

Using Carbon Copy with Novell NetWare
-------------------------------------
    The following minimum versions of Novell NetWare components
    are recommended for proper operation when using the Carbon
    Copy LAN (IPX) driver:

        Windows Components
        ------------------
        NETWARE.DRV:    v2.02 (021026)
        NWIPXSPX.DLL:   v1.32
        NWPOPUP.EXE:    v2.02 (021027)
        VIPX.386:       v1.13 (920903)
        VNETWARE.386:   v1.06 (921015)

        DOS Components
        --------------
        EMSNETX.EXE:    v3.31 (921112)
        IPXODI.COM:     v2.00 (920904)
        LSL.COM:        v2.00 (920904)
        NETX.EXE:       v3.31 (921112)
        TBMI2.COM:      v2.10 (911204)
        XMSNETX.EXE:    v3.31 (921112)

    It is especially important to update to Novell's VIPX.386
    version 1.13 or later. The version that ships with Windows
    3.1 will not work properly.

    The latest files are available on CompuServe in the Novell forum as
    WINUP9.ZIP and DOSUP9.ZIP. Later versions of these files
    may be available and may be used also.

Using Carbon Copy with 3COM 3C505 LAN Adapter Cards
---------------------------------------------------
    The 3COM 3C505 LAN Adapter card does not work properly
    with Microsoft Windows in enhanced mode. 3COM is
    working on new drivers that will correct this problem.
    Contact 3COM technical support at (800) 876-3266 for
    more information.

LAN (IPX) Setup Connect Timeout
-----------------------------------------
    Connect Timeout within the LAN (IPX) Setup dialog
    represents the number of seconds allowed before an
    attempted connection is terminated.

Disabling the Host Video on 256-color Cards
-------------------------------------------
    Carbon Copy may not be able to disable the video on some 256-
    color cards. Changing to a 16-color driver will usually
    correct this.

Windowing a 256-Color DOS Application
-------------------------------------
    Microsoft Windows reports that it is unable to display your
    256 color DOS application in a window when using a 256
    color display driver. Carbon Copy for Windows will not be
    able to remotely control Windows at that time. When
    running with a 16 color driver, however, Windows will
    emulate the 256 color DOS application (in 16 colors).
    Carbon Copy for Windows, in this instance, can successfully
    control Windows running the windowed application.

Display Drivers
---------------
    The Windows display drivers not directly supported by
    Carbon Copy for Windows include the following:

          Olivetti/AT&T monochrome or PVC display
          Quad VGA
          82c441 VGA

Replacing COMM.DRV with CCCOMM.DRV
---------------------------------------------------
    You may need to replace COMM.DRV with CCCOMM.DRV
    when running Windows in Standard Mode. If you experience
    a toggle in DTR that causes the connection to drop when you
    open a DOS box or exit Windows, replace COMM.DRV with
    CCCOMM.DRV in your SYSTEM.INI file. To replace COMM.DRV with
    CCCOMM.DRV, you must first copy CCOMM.DRV to the WINDOWS\MICROCOM
    subdirectory. Then, open your SYSTEM.INI file in any text editor
    and locate the line COMM.DRV=. Edit that line as shown in this example:
    COMM.DRV=C:\WINDOWS\MICROCOM\CCCOMM.DRV
    Where WINDOWS is your Windows directory.

Diamond Stealth VRAM 1280 16-color Mode
--------------------------------------
    The Diamond Stealth card will not work with Carbon Copy
    in this mode, but it will work with other modes such as
    1024x768 16 or 256-color modes.

XGA 16-color, HP 16-color SVGA
------------------------------
    These cards do not work with Carbon Copy in 16-color mode
    using their native drivers. However, they will work fine
    using the Windows standard VGA driver. The XGA and HP
    cards also work correctly with native drivers using any of
    their 256-color modes.

ATI Mach32 Setup Failure to Install Drivers
-------------------------------------------
    On some system configurations when running Windows with
    an ATI Mach32 driver, Carbon Copy for Windows Setup will
    fail to properly install required drivers. This may occur at the
    end of setup when it states that it will install drivers and restart
    Windows. If Windows does not restart, change your current
    directory to the directory you chose to install Carbon Copy for
    Windows in and type 'CCWCOPY'. This batch file will install
    the required drivers. After the batch file is complete, Carbon
    Copy is fully installed. Restart Windows to use Carbon Copy
    for Windows.

ATI Ultra/Mach32 "Crystal Font" Driver
--------------------------------------
    The ATI Ultra/Mach32 "Crystal Font" driver does not work
    properly with Carbon Copy, however, all other ATI Ultra/Mach 32
    drivers work fine, including 1024x768 and 256-color drivers.
    If you are using this driver, use the Windows Setup program to
    select another Ultra/Mach32 driver, and then reinstall Carbon Copy.

Network Warning Messages During Windows Startup
-----------------------------------------------
    Carbon Copy is not able to display Network Warning
    messages during Windows startup. In order to prevent
    problems with remote control, we recommend disabling
    these messages using the Network option in Windows
    Control Panel. If these messages are not disabled, you
    will not be able to view the Host screen until the dialog
    box is removed. However, the keyboard is still active
    and pressing <Enter> will remove the warning message.

Using Window's Standard Mode with the LAN (IPX) Driver
------------------------------------------------------
    The TBMI2.COM utility must be loaded before Windows
    can be run in standard mode using the network. If you get
    a "Communication driver in not installed" message, make
    sure that this utility is loaded before you start Windows.

     TBMI2.COM is required by Novell if running Windows in
     Standard mode. If running DOSHOST, TBMI2.COM should
     be loaded after DOSHOST.

Increasing Performance on 80286-based PCs
-----------------------------------------
    Most 80286-based machines running at 12-MHz or slower
    will give better performance if the port speed is set at 9600
    baud or lower. Using port speeds greater than 9600 baud may
    actually decrease throughput on these machines due to more
    frequent retransmissions.

    If you are running Windows version 3.1, you may use the
    FasterModeSwitch=1 option in the [standard] section of your
    Windows SYSTEM.INI file. Enabling this setting causes
    Windows running in standard mode to use a faster method of
    switching from protected to real mode on many 80286-based
    computers. When this setting is enabled, Windows responds
     quicker to hardware interrupts, screen updates, and improves
     file transfer speeds. NOTE: This setting has no effect on
     80386-based computers. Some early IBM AT and compatible
     computers do not support this setting. Enabling this setting on
     these 80286-based machines may cause them to lock up when
     starting Windows.

ISA Cornerstone Set to "Optimize for Photographs"
-------------------------------------------------
    The Cornerstone driver has a problem displaying
    highlights when set to "Optimize for Photographs". This
    will result in some of Carbon Copy for Windows dialogs,
    including some in Setup, to not display selected options.
    To solve this, use Cornerstone's Control Panel applet to
    set the driver to "Optimize for Speed".

Enhancing Mouse Performance
---------------------------
    When using Carbon Copy for Windows with modems that
    connect at 2400 baud, mouse performance can be enhanced
    by changing the QuickMouse parameter in CCW.INI as follows:

          QuickMouse=5

    This change must be made directly using a text editor.
    (CCW.INI is located in your WINDOWS directory.) The
    default setting of QuickMouse=2 is best for modems that
    connect at baud rates of 9600 or higher.

    When using modems that have asymmetrical modulation
    schemes, the transmit and receive channels may operate at
    vastly different speeds. An example of such a modem is the
    US Robotics Courier HST. For these modems, you may want
    to set QuickMouse as high as 10 for best performance.

    You may also notice better performance by setting
    QuickMouse to a higher value on noisy phone lines.

Disconnecting with the "Exit Windows" Dialog Displayed
------------------------------------------------------
    Because of a limitation within Microsoft Windows, you
    should not disconnect from a Host machine while the
    "Exit Windows" dialog is displayed. If you do, you may
    not be able to reconnect to the Host system until
    someone at the host machine responds to the dialog box.

Changing the Communications Options
-----------------------------------
    If you change any of the options on the Communications
    menu (i.e. change drivers, WorkStation Name, Port, etc.)
    while DOSHOST is loaded, you should unload and reload
    the DOSHOST program. Some of the options do not take
    effect in DOSHOST until this is done.

Running Setup with Limited Disk Space
-------------------------------------
    Setup requires a minimum of 4Mb of disk space plus 2Mb
    of temporary workspace to install the complete Carbon Copy
    for Windows product. If your disk space is limited to less
    than this amount, and you have a previously installed version
    of Carbon Copy for Windows on your hard disk, you may want
    to delete it so you have enough space to reinstall the product.

Using Carbon Copy along with CPU Intensive Applications
-------------------------------------------------------
    When using Carbon Copy utilities such as File Transfer or
    Remote Control, along with CPU intensive applications
    (mostly benchmark programs), the Carbon Copy utility
    may sometimes display the message "General Failure", or
    lock-up your system. This means that File Transfer is not
    receiving enough CPU time to do its work. If this happens,
    simply close the application that is causing the problem
    and try to run the Carcon Copy utility again.

    If you have trouble connecting to a machine that is running
    this type of program, you may want to try terminating the
    application before attempting a connection.

Changing the Mouse Settings during Remote Control
-------------------------------------------------
    If you change the mouse settings in the Windows Control
    Panel during a remote control session, the Guest's mouse
    may temporarily be out of synchronization with the Host
    mouse. If this happens, simply use the keyboard to choose
    the OK button in the Mouse Settings dialog, and the mouse
    will return to normal.

    Note that there is very little reason to change the mouse
    settings on the Host in this way. Mouse performance is
    mostly affected by the Guest's mouse settings.

Microsoft Mouse 9.0 Pointer Growth Option
-----------------------------------------
    Microsoft Mouse (Software Version 9.0) pointer growth
    option should not be enabled on the Guest when running
    remote control. This may cause the cursor to change to
    an hourglass randomly.

HP Intellifont Drivers
----------------------
    The HP Intellifont display driver (IFW.DRV) is
    incompatible with Carbon Copy for Windows. You should
    remove this driver from your SYSTEM.INI in order to use
    Carbon Copy.

Communications Port Not Found Message
-------------------------------------
    If you get a "Communications port not found." message
    from Carbon Copy, you may want to check the "Custom"
    settings in the Port Settings dialog box to make sure
    they are correct. The settings installed by using the
    "Default" pushbutton are usually correct for most systems.

LAN Connections using Routers without IPX Message 14h Support
-------------------------------------------------------------
    Some routers do not pass IPX message type 14h. Carbon
    Copy for Windows uses, as a default, message type 14h
    to establish connections over LANs. When using the
    routers without this support, Guests and/or Hosts will
    not appear in the Call a Host dialog. To solve this
    potential problem, enter the line:

                NetwareBroadcast=On

    in the [Carbon Copy] section of CCW.INI. CCW.INI can
    be found in your Windows directory.

Using Carbon Copy with Asynchronous Communications Servers (ACS)
================================================================

    See ACS.TXT for application notes regarding the use of
    Carbon Copy with NCSI/NASI and EBIOS/INT14-based ACS
    products.

==============================
    See NETBIOS.TXT for application notes regarding the use of
    Carbon Copy on a NETBIOS compatible network.

USING THE SETCOM UTILITY (USING COM3 OR COM4)
=============================================

    In many systems, Windows will not recognize serial
    ports COM3 and COM4. See SETCOM.TXT for information
    about the SETCOM utility and solutions to this problem.
