1. 928Movie Tips
----------------

Video for Windows acceleration
------------------------------
With 928Movie you can increase the size of your AVI movies without reducing
their frame rate. How you do this will vary from application to application.
In some cases you can enlarge the movie window by dragging its border; in
other cases you may need to use the commands or buttons provided.

By default, all movies with an .AVI extension launched from File Manager or
Program Manager will run under Microsoft's Media Player. You can enlarge
movies in Media Player by dragging the window border. Alternatively, you can
configure Media Player to run movies full screen (hiding all graphics) or at
twice their normal size, by choosing Configure from the Devices menu.

Some applications developed before 928Movie use movies that can only be
shown at a fixed size. Contact your application supplier to find out whether
they supply an upgrade which enables their application to take advantage of
928Movie's scaling.

Overlapping windows
-------------------
When other objects, such as windows or icons, partially overlay your video
window, 928Movie will automatically prevent the video from drawing over them.
However, this will cause the update speed of the video to drop a little. For
best performance with video windows we recommend that you avoid any such
overlap.

Playing movies in 256 color modes
---------------------------------
When your 928Movie card is configured for a color depth of 256 colors (8-bit
paletized), only movies recorded in 8-bit mode (which therefore have an
associated palette), are accelerated when scaled up. This means that
Microsoft Video 1 8-bit compressed movies will be accelerated, but 16-bit
Video 1 movies, Indeo movies and CinePak movies will not.

We recommend that wherever possible you configure 928Movie to work at a
minimum color depth of 65 thousand colors (16-bit RGB). Whether or not this
is possible will depend on the resolution you are working at and on the
amount of memory installed on your 928Movie. To use 65 thousand colors on a
1 MB 928Movie you are limited to a maximum resolution of 800 x 600. With 2 MB
fitted you can work at resolutions of up to 1152 x 864. Please contact
VideoLogic to order your 928Movie 1 MB upgrade.

Movies optimised for 256 colors
-------------------------------
Many applications that use AVI movies were designed for VGA or SuperVGA
graphics cards and recommend that you set your graphics card to 256 colors.
In fact, these movies will play back as well (and probably much better) with
928Movie configured for a color depth of 65 thousand colors (16-bit RGB) or
better. There is no need to reduce the number of colors you are using in
order to work with these applications.

Using "Zoom by 2" from Media Player
-----------------------------------
Certain Video for Windows formats (e.g. Microsoft Video 1) provide special
support for "Zoom by 2" from within Media Player. Movies in these formats may
bypass the acceleration provided by 928Movie, and actually play worse when
zoomed to exactly twice their normal size. You can avoid this by making
the window slightly smaller or larger than exactly twice the default size.

2. General Information
----------------------

To install, use Windows Setup to set the Display Driver to VGA. Then run the
928Movie Setup program from DOS.

When installing the 928Movie software or changing the display mode settings
please make sure that no other application (e.g. SYSEDIT) is editing
SYSTEM.INI, as it is possible for the changes made by 928Movie Setup or
928Movie Display to be overwritten when the other application exits.

If you have a 928Movie with audio, your Base Address, Interrupt Level, Duplex
and DMA settings may be changed each time you run Setup from DOS. If you have
customised any of these settings, then you should reset the values after
running Setup.

If your monitor is not in the Monitor Type list box in the 928Movie Display
window, please check the VideoLogic bulletin boards for an updated monitor
list. See page 35 of the 928Movie User Guide for contact details.

If you accidentally select a display mode which is not supported by your
monitor it is possible that your display will become unreadable, making it
impossible to change back to a suitable mode. To correct this, exit Windows
(ALT+F4 a number of times followed by ENTER will often get you out of Windows,
otherwise you must use CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your PC), then restart Windows
and hold down the CTRL key while Windows starts. This forces the 928Movie
driver to start in 640 x 480 graphics mode at 60 Hz, which is suitable for all
VGA monitors. Now you can use 928Movie Display to set the display mode you
want.

SmoothScale is optimized for Video for Windows (VfW) v1.1. 928Movie Setup
will install VfW Runtime v1.1 for you. If you install VfW v1.0 then some
.AVI files may not be accelerated. In this case, run 928Movie Setup, choose
Custom install and select the VfW v1.1 option only.

Installing 928Movie will change the look of all your Control Panel options,
giving them a 3D feel. If you want to switch this off, add the following line
to the [928Movie] section of SYSTEM.INI.

    3DLook=OFF

Note that OFF must be in uppercase.

We have supplied a Windows background bitmap on disk 2. To use this, expand
the file into your Windows directory, e.g.

    expand a:\928movie.bm_ c:\windows\928movie.bmp

The Expand application is supplied with Windows and should be in your Windows
directory. You can use this bitmap as your Windows background by selecting it
from the Wallpaper list box in the Desktop Control Panel option.

3. The 928Movie Full Screen driver
-----------------------------------

In addition to the 928Movie software documented in your User Guide the
928Movie Setup program also installs the 928Movie Full Screen driver. This
driver enables you to use the scaling and acceleration capabilities of
928Movie with the Video for Windows Full Screen option. If you don't use the
Video for Windows Full Screen option you can ignore the 928Movie Full Screen
driver.

When you play movies with the Video for Windows Full Screen option selected,
Video for Windows plays the movie in the center of your screen at 320 x 240
using 256 colors. However, even at such a low resolution the performance of
the Full Screen option is poor because it bypasses the scaling and
acceleration capabilities of 928Movie. To counteract this we have provided
the 928Movie Full Screen driver. This driver enables the Full Screen option
to take advantage of the scaling and acceleration of 928Movie, allowing you
to use higher resolutions and more colors.

Choose the resolution used by the Full Screen driver by configuring the
928Movie Full Screen driver in the Drivers Control Panel option. Online help
is available.

VideoLogic is one of the first companies to produce a full screen handler for
Video for Windows. Because application writers have not been able to test
their handling of this mode until now, a number of applications (e.g.
Microsoft Cinemania) have problems and may even crash when trying to run
movies full screen. Other movies, such as Indeo, may play very slowly at
full screen for the same reason. If you encounter these problems, try using
Zoom by 2 rather than Full Screen as your default Media Player option.

4. Demonstrating 928Movie
-------------------------

To show the real benefit of 928Movie in terms of Video for Windows movie
acceleration, an application called MIDSWICH.EXE is supplied on disk 2. To
install this application, simply copy the files into a directory on your hard
disk (perhaps the default 928Movie directory). For example:

        copy a:\midswich.exe c:\928movie\*.*
        copy a:\midsw.dll c:\928movie\*.*

You can run MIDSWICH.EXE using the Run command from the File menu in Program
Manager, or you can add it to one of your program groups.

When running, MIDSWITCH gives you the ability to switch off SmoothScale and
movie acceleration in real-time, demonstrating the difference in movie
playback between running a normal Windows accelerator and running 928Movie.

Start the application. Click on the icon for the running application (on your
desktop), and a menu will appear. Select "Define Switch Keys". A dialog box
will appear allowing you to define two hotkeys. Once defined, the "In" key
will enable SmoothScale and movie acceleration, and the "Out" key will
disable SmoothScale and movie acceleration. Define the keys you want to use
to demonstrate 928Movie.

By pressing the "In" and "Out" keys, you can put 928Movie in one of three
states:

        movie acceleration and SmoothScale off
        movie acceleration on, without SmoothScale
        movie acceleration on, with SmoothScale

For the most striking demonstration of the power of 928Movie:
- Press the "Out" key twice (this will disable acceleration completely).
- Start a Video for Windows movie using Media Player and increase its size to
at least double the default size. The movie will look very blocky, and the
frame rate will decrease, making it play erratically. This is what you see
with a normal Windows accelerator.
- Press the "In" key once to enable movie playback acceleration. The movie
plays back at the same frame rate as it did at its default size.
- Press the "In" key once more to enable SmoothScale. You will see the
blockiness of the stretched movie smoothed out to give a much clearer picture.
- You can continue to press the "Out" and "In" keys as often as you wish to
see the difference between 928Movie and a normal Windows accelerator -
remember that once 928Movie is fully enabled (by pressing the "In" key a
couple of times), pressing the "Out" key first turns SmoothScale off, then
turns playback acceleration off. Once fully disabled, pressing the "In" key
first accelerates movie playback, and then turns SmoothScale on.
- Remember to fully enable 928Movie when you have finished using MIDSWITCH.

If you are demonstrating 928Movie in true color and showing CinePak movies,
disabling 928Movie acceleration will mean that the movies stop playing. This
is a feature of Video for Windows that 928Movie corrects when enabled.

5. Removing the 928Movie software
---------------------------------

The 928Movie software is easy to disable or remove, and can be taken out on
a component-by-component basis (for example, you can disable or remove just
the audio component). You will need to delete most of the files from DOS as
they are in use when Windows is active (and so cannot be deleted).

Note 1 (for problem listed above): Some VESA local bus PCs with UMC
motherboards use a UM82C4913 chip that has incorrect DMA timing. Many of
these PCs allow you to change the system (CMOS) settings to IBM-AT
compatible timings, as follows:

- for AMI BIOS PCs, press DEL during boot and go to the Advanced Chipset
Setup option. Find the 8-bit DMA wait state option and change it to 2
wait states. Save the settings. If there is no DMA wait state option
then follow the instructions for Award BIOS below.

- for Award BIOS, press DEL during boot and go to the Advanced Chipset
Setup option. Find the AT clock option and change it to CPUCLK/8. Save
   the settings.
