Welcome to the Release Candidate of Microsoft Windows NT version 3.5.
Please be sure to consult the Release Notes for important information
before installing this release.

1.0 Updating Support for an Existing Windows NT 3.1 Installation

IMPORTANT: The following update utility must be executed before
running Windows NT Setup for version 3.5 if you are installing
this release on a computer that will also keep a version of
Windows NT 3.1.

1.1 Running UPDATE.EXE to Ensure File Access

If you are installing Windows NT 3.5 and also keeping a copy of
Windows NT 3.1 on the same computer, you must run UPDATE.EXE
if you want to ensure that any version of Windows NT 3.1
installed on your computer can still access files on your
NTFS partitions and to prevent damage to FAT partitions.

If you do not run UPDATE.EXE, then after Setup is complete,
files on NTFS partitions cannot be seen by Windows NT 3.1.
Also, using long filenames on FAT partitions might render
those partitions inaccessible from within Windows NT 3.1.

You do not need to run UPDATE.EXE if you are upgrading or
reinstalling this new version and do not wish to keep the
older version of Windows NT on your computer.

>>To update your Windows NT 3.1 system with UPDATE.EXE:

    1. Before running the Windows NT 3.5 Setup program,
switch to the \FS31UPD\<system_type> directory on the
Windows NT 3.5 CD-ROM or on the Update Disk for Microsoft
       NT 3.1 for x86-based installations.
For example, you might switch to E:\FS31UPD\I386
       for x86-based systems.

       - Or -
For x86-based computers only, insert the disk titled
"Update Disk for Microsoft Windows NT 3.1" in drive A and
       make that the active drive.

    2. Run UPDATE.EXE.

Follow the directions on the screen to complete the update.
