Version 4.0 3/24/94

1.0 Introduction:

Dragonball is the smash hit comic by Akira Toriyama published weekly
in Shonen Jump magazine in Japan. It started off as a martial arts
comedy that draws characters from the Monkey King legend of China.
Over the past couple of years, it has become even more action oriented
with super heroic fights, aliens, cyborgs, and people throwing around
enough energy to level a planet (and one of them does!) It has also
spawned a TV series that has run around 350+ episodes (Dragonball and
Dragonball Z combined), eight theatrical releases, a few TV specials,
three Famicom (Nintendo) games, and three Super Famicom (SNES) games
(this being the sequel to the second one).

This game is the sequel to the first fighting game that came out in
early 1993. Once again there are eight players to begin with and three
new characters that have been added. There are also two additional
characters that can be accessed through a special code and load of
hidden moves.

2.0 Characters:

Super Saiyajin Son Gohan: Son of the hero of the TV series. He is a
hybrid of human and saiyajin. He would rather study peacefully than
duke it out with villians wielding planet smashing abilities. After his
father, Son Goku, sacrifices himself to save the planet, Gohan tries to
settle down to a normal life.

Super Saiyajin Vejita: Alien prince of the now destroyed planet that he
is named after. He is one of the few remaining saiyajins in the universe.
He has settled down somewhat now that Goku is dead but still retains his
bad-ass attitude.

Super Saiyajin Trunks: Trunks is the future son of Vejita and Bulma and
had travelled back in time to warn our heroes about Dr. Gear's androids
but got caught up in the great Cell Game. Afterwards, he returned to his
time line so he could kill the androids and Cell in his future.

Piccolo: He (it?) is an alien from the planet Namek. He originally started
off as the evil that God cast off before ascending to divinity but when the
androids (see the last game) showed up, he recombined with God to become a
Super Namekseijin. He taught Gohan how to fight and is very fond of the
boy. He now spends his time teaching Dende, the new God of Earth.

Perfect Cell: Cell is a cybernetic construct built from the genetic material
of our heroes and several of the villains they have fought. He kills Trunks
from a future timeline and travels back to consume Dr. Gear's androids to
attain his perfect form. He obviously does so and declares the he will
destroy the world in 10 days unless the heroes compete in the Cell Game.

Cell, Junior: Cell can reproduce and does so in the series. He gives birth
to seven little versions of himself to fight our heroes just for fun. This
little critter is pretty brainless but is still very powerful.

Bojack: He is the leader of the brutal "Milky Way Warriors" and he tried to
destroy the galaxy a long time ago. He was revived when Kai-Oh's power
was sealed when he was killed during the fight with Cell.

Zangya: Although she's a cute girl, she's actually a cruel, brutal tyrant.
Milky Way Warriors are, above all, extremely brutal soldiers. She worships
Bojack and is responsible for the evil doppelgangers of our heroes destroying
the cities to the north.

2.1 Secret Characters:

These are characters you fight during the story mode but cannot normally
access in versus mode. A secret code allows you to play them though.

Super Saiyajin Son Goku: Hero of the show until he gets himself killed
trying to stop Cell. He now spends his time in the afterlife, working
for Kai-Oh Sama.

Burori: Is suppossed to be the Ultimate Super Saiya-jin. He and his
father survived the destruction of their homeworld but Burori was driven
mad by Goku's constant crying when they occupied cribs next to one another
when they were infants.

2.2 Secondary Cast:

Mr. Satan: A dorky professional wrestler who was chosen to represent
Earth's government during the Cell Game. He is basically a normal human
being among superheroes. He actually believes that all the super powers
our heroes have is just a trick. Unfortunately everyone else in the
world believes him and they also believe he is the one who defeated Cell.

Chi Chi: Goku's wife and mother to Gohan. She has been pressuring Gohan
to study study STUDY!!! She hopes the her son will become a great scholar
one day.

Bulma: Both she and Goku have been around since the start of the series.
She is the daughter of the founder of the Capsule Corporation and is very
smart and stinking rich. She has a child (Trunks) through Vejita (much to
the chagrin of her first boyfriend Yamcha).

Bulma's Father: Inventor of Capsule technology and the founder of the
Capsule Corporation. Is always building spaceships and high gravity
training rooms for our heroes.

Muten Roshi: Goku's first trainer in martial arts. He taught Goku how
to use the devastating Kame-Hame Ha.

Kulilin: Trained under Muten Roshi along with Goku. He is Goku's
best friend. Although he is not as powerful as Goku, he is pretty high
up there and also uses his brains when it comes to fighting. After the
Cell game he tracks down and wins the heart of Android #18.

Dende: A young Namekseijin who befriended our heroes when they fought
Freeza and is now the new God of Earth. He is best friends with Gohan.

Mister Popo: A djinn who works for whoever is the current God of Earth. He
takes care of the more mundane tasks of the divine (such as fixing the
Dragon God whenever someone breaks it).

Tenkai Ichi Budookai M.C.: This guy is the announcer for the Tenkai Ichi
Budookai and sometimes also refs the fights. He has the thankless job of
reporting what is going on while our heroes toss around enough energy to
destroy the planet. He announces the winner at the end of the tournament.

3.0 Title Screen:

After you hear Goku shouting encoragement to Gohan upon powering on the
game you will see yourself flying towards God's palace. Hit the A button
to get the first menu up. The menu has the following choices:

  Story Mode
  Versus Mode
  Tenkai Ichi Budookai Mode
  Options Mode

3.1 Story Mode:

This is a little different from the first game. You can choose from four
characters to play the story mode and four difficulty levels. The characters
are Gohan, Vejita, Piccolo, and Trunks. As you go through the game you are
sometimes prompted to enter a selection and this will supposedly alter who
you fight and when. So far I do not see this as having a real impact except
when you lose a fight and are prompted whether you wish to try again and you
must enter yes (the first choice). The story is different for each difficulty
level in the game and level 3 and above has two new end bosses.

3.2 Versus Mode:

In this mode you can fight either against the computer, against another
player, or watch the computer fight itself. After selecting who you will
fight as, you can then alter features for the battle. They are as follows:

  Starting Life (default of 400)
Hitting Power Normal/Hard (default of Normal)
Determines hitting power when you punck/kick.
  Difficulty Level (default of 1)
  Battlefield (default of Random)
  Bachground Music

3.3 Tenkai Ichi Budookai Mode:

This is Japanese for the Number One Martial Artist in the World
Contest. It is a competition held once every three years with a large
cash prize. Up to eight people can compete in this mode. You chose
eight characters and the computer randomizes them for the elimination
rounds. If you hit the run button while on the character selection
screen, the computer will randomly choose characters beyond the ones you
have already chosen and will play them during the fight.

3.4 Option Mode:

  You have three choices here:

  Soundmode: Stereo/Mono
  Music Test
  Sound Test

4.0 Game Play:

The object of the game is to fight your opponent and knock their life
down to zero thus winning the match. Unlike Street Fighter II, this is
not a best out of three match. It is one match only.

4.1 Screen:

The screen shows the playing field when combat begins. Opponents
start facing one another and are on the same screen. There are two sets
of two bars at the top of the screen. The top two show the current
life of both fighters. A fighter can have up to two bar fulls of
life. The life bars are colored green and/or yellow. Green is the
most full a life bar can be. If a green life bar of a fighter is
knocked down to zero during combat then the life bar will turn yellow
and when that is nearly gone it will flash red. Note: in the story
mode, some of the computer opponents will start out with more life than
you thus you can measure how tough they are by looking at the color of
their life bar before combat begins.

The bottom two sets of bars show the energy or "ki" of the two
fighters. This can only fill up one bar (the color yellow). Energy
is a little different in this game. You can still perform a super move
if you do not have enough energy but if you do then you will be fatigued
until you regain enough energy so you are back at 0. Characters can charge
themselves up by holding down the Y and B buttons. This does leave them
open to attacks though.

Below the energy bars is the radar. In situations in which the
fighters move off screen in relation to one another, the radar is used
to keep track of where they are. Radar can also track fireballs that
fighters toss at one another so they can see them coming and take
evasive maneuvers if they so desire. Fighters are represented as
different colored figures and fireballs as colored circles on the radar.

Finally, there are two levels the fighters can duke it out on.
The can either be on the ground or up flying in the sky. This does not
change game play much except that it makes it easier for one fighter to
zip past another if one is on the ground and the other up in the sky.

4.2 Joy pad:

Directional Pad: A fighter's movement is controlled by the pad.
Pushing up allows a fighter to jump straight up. Pushing diagonally
up to either the left or right will cause the fighter to jump forwards
or backwards. Pushing down while on the ground causes the fighter to
crouch down. To walk forward or backward (or fly slowly forward or
backward while in the sky) is down by pushing left or right. Defending
from punches, kicks, and fireballs is done by pushing away from the
incoming attack. A defensive crouch is done by pushing diagonally down
and away from the incoming attack.

Note on Joypad Descriptions:

When it comes to describing joy pad movements, assume that the pad is
a compass with up being north, down being south, right being east, etc.
The moves are described assume that the player is facing to the right.
If they are facing to the left then do the mirror image of the move
described. EXAMPLE: Gohan's Kami-Hami Ha is done by pressing S, SW,
W, E, then A. If the player is facing to the left then you do it by
pressing S, SE, E, W, then A. Also if a plus sign is listed next to a
joy pad direction and a button then you press that joy pad direction
while simultaneously pressing the button. EXAMPLE: N+A mean press up
and A at the same time. This mirror imaging can be turned off though
so that you just do the move as it is described in the manual without
reversing it when you are facing the opposite direction (more on this
later).

X Button: This allows a fighter to fly up into the sky or land back on
the ground. This can only be done when the split screen is on. One
cannot do this when both fighters are on the same screen.

A Button: This throws the generic fireball attack. It is a small
burst of energy that travels across the screen towards you opponent and
has a limited range. The A button is also used in conjunction with joy
pad moves to perform other maneuvers and defenses (more on this later).

B Button: This throws a simple kick. When used in conjunction with
the joy pad, more elaborate moves can be done.

Y Button: This throws a simple punch. As with the kick button, more
elaborate attacks can be done with the Y button. This button can also
be used to throw someone. You press up against you opponent and press
the Y button.

Left & Right Buttons: These allow the player to fly forward or
backward very fast depending on which direction they are facing. These
buttons can also be used to stop yourself from being thrown or being
smacked into a mountain. When you are about to be thrown (just as your
opponent grabs you) press the Right button twice to stop in mid air as
you are being thrown. Press the Left button twice to stop in mid air
and also to counter attack with a kick! If you have just been smashed
across the land scape and are about to hit a mountain, press the right
button twice to stop before you hit it.

Start Button: This pauses the game during combat and is used to select
options elsewhere.

Select Button: This is not used in combat but when the game is paused,
pressing the select button on the first pad will bring up the option
screens so the game can be reconfigured in the middle of combat. The options
availible are as follows:

Auto Super Moves (default of off)
When it is activated, all you need to do is press the A button to perform
    a super move.
Super Moves Directions Normal/Left/Right (default of Normal)
This sets how you must perform a super move. Unidirectional means that
you must do it as normal, mirror imaging the move if you face in the
opposite direction. Left and Right means you can always do the move as
if you are always facing left or right no matter what your real facing is.
Command Practice (more on this later)
  Soundmode Stereo/Mono (default of Stereo)
  Radar On/Off (default of On)

4.3 A Note About Fatigue:

Just like in the first game, a player can become fatigued. There are
several ways to become so:

1) Throw too many fireballs without stopping for a rest.
2) Performing a Super Move when you do not have enough Ki. You will get the
move off but you will be fatigued afterward.
3) Getting hit by several moves in rapid succession.
4) Being hit by a special attack (see character moves).

When fatigued, you cannot defend from an incoming attack including super
moves. When you are hit, you will snap out of it. Another way to shake
off fatigue is to wait or to toggle left and right on your joypad as
rapidly as possible.

4.4 Super Moves and Defenses:

Dragonball is a super hero comic after all so what would it be without
super powers? Each of the fighters has two super moves that they can
perform. These are long distance attacks in which the fighter powers up
and then throws a powerful energy attack at their opponent. The victim
is not completely helpless though and there are several ways of protecting
them self from the incoming attack. Unlike the previous game, you do not
need to be a certain distance to do the attacks. In fact, if you are too
close and do a super move, you do a short range version of it which can
punch throw any normal fireballs thrown to block it. You also do not need
to have a certain amount of energy (though you need to if you do not wish
to be fatigued after the attack). There are also defenses to the super
moves. When your opponent sets off a Super Move, the view will then switch
to you. As soon as the view switches you may perform one of the following
defenses:

Block: Push towards the direction of incoming attack and also press A.
Only 1/2 damage done.

Deflect: Assuming that the defender is facing to the right you press
W, SW, S + A. You then press your A button as rapidly as possible to
deflect the blow when it hits you. Only 1/4 damage done.

Disperse: Push towards, away, towards + A button to disperse the attack
with your ki. This uses up some of your energy. No damage done.

Super Parry: Assuming that the defender is facing to the right you press
S, SW, W, E + A. Your character will send a counter blast at the incoming
attack and they will meet halfway. Both players must hit the A button as
rapidly as possible to see whose fireball will win. When one is the victor
the loser has a few seconds to do a Block defense.

Note: These moves to defend have to be done immediately after the
view changes to you and has to be done fast! On the higher difficulty
levels these defenses are harder to use since you have less time to perform
them.

4.5 Command Practice

If you are having problems trying to get off some of those more difficult
moves, the game provides a way of practicing each and every move (except
the hidden moves) for each and every character (including the two hidden
ones if you have inputed the code). You get to the command practice by
hitting Start during game play then Select to get the options menu. From
there, select the third option. To the right is the name of the character
whose moves you will see. You can push left or right on the joy pad to
get different characters then press A to select that character. Next, a
black screen with nine options will appear. The topmose option is the
characters names (you can change it from thre if you want instead of going
back to the previous screen). The other eight are the listed moves for that
character. As you move up and down, you will see the commands for how to
perform those moves. Select a move and press the A button. The character
will appear at the bottom of the screen and from there you can attempt to
perform the move. If you are successful, the character will do the move, if
not then try again. When you are done practicing the move, just it the
Start button to select another move or hit the B button to get back to the
options screen and then Select and Start to get back to game play.

5.0 Character Move Descriptions:

Each character has eight moves listed in the instruction manual. In
addition to these listed moves there is one undocumented maneuver. Assume
that all players are facing to the right, otherwise do the mirror image.

6.0 Codes:

What would a good fighting game be without secret codes? Fortunately, like
the last game, this one is full of them.

Turbo Mode: Upon powering on, hold down the L, R, and Select Buttons on pad
#2 until you hear a different starting theme than normal. This will speed
up the game.

Boss Characters Mode: After you hear Goku's voice and the screen shows
Gohan's fists flying towards the palace, press the following in the
following sequence: Up, X, Down, B, Left Button, Y, Right Button, A. You
should hear Burori's voice and now you can play both Burori and Goku in
Versus or Tenkai Ichi Budokai Mode.

Give Up: During gameplay press the X, Y, A, B, and Select buttons all at
once to surrender the battle.

Itsi-Bitsy Code: This probably is the most useless code but it is still
amusing to try. During versus mode, after character selection, you will
see dialogue being exchanged by the two opponents. During this, press down
five times and you should hear a bell. When the game starts, your character
is now only a few pixels tall. He can still be hit and fight as if he was
his or her normal size though!

7.0 The Real Ending:

On levels one and two, you can only fight your way up to Bojak and
then the end credits will roll whether you defeat him or not. On levels 3
and 4, you will be told by Goku that there is still an evil presence out
there and you will track it down to a devastated city. There you will fight
Burori. After Burori, Goku will come back and you get to fight him one last
time (fortunately Goku is nice enough to allow you to fight him more than
once if you lose). Upon defeating Goku, you will get a cast role call with
each characters voice actor being listed along with a quote from that
character. Then the end screen will be shown and a message of PASS-1UX is
displayed if you won using Gohan. If you win with the other three characters
then you will get different numbers and letters. Putting these number and
letters together you get the boss character code already described above.
