Pentium Overdrive chips are Still Long overdue !
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tired of waiting for a P24T Overdrive chip , for your Pentium
upgradable ?
Well, according to Intel you'll have to keep waiting.
The soonest wa can expect to see Intel's rocket-assist
486-to-Pentium converter will be in the late fourth quarter.
The good news is that the overdue Pentium Overdrive chips will
run at 3.3 volts, instead of the originally planned 5 volts.
That means , theoritically at least, you won't need a pc
air conditioner. Even so, Intel plans to ship some versions
of the chip with heat sinks or builtin fans attached.
The bad news is that an Overdrive-assisted Pc may not be as
fast as you'd like.
The CPUs will come in clock-doubled and -tripled versions,
with a top of 100 Mhz. That means , you'll be working
(externally) at speeds of only 33 Mhz. This taken with
the external 32-bit adressing of 486- motherboards and hence
the Overdrive processor, is causing industry experts to
speculate that the best performance is in the range of
a 60 Mhz Pentium. More seriously, not all so called
" pentium upgradable " systems may, in fact handle the upgrade.
Recent systems with the intel verified label should accept
a Pentium overdrive chip without any problems.
Other systems, however -especially early ones dating from
June 1992, when the first so called pentium ready pc's appeared
, to June 1993 - might not be able to take the heat.
In particular , machines with the original 238 pin ZIF
zero insertion force socket could face serious overheating problems.
These Pc's will almost certainly need an extra fan -or ,
in Intel jargon, a thermal cooling module (TCM)- to shift
to the Pentium Overdrive.
