TITLE: "Your license has been exceeded"
Occasionally people get this message and then PowWow refuses to start.

What does this message mean?

(OK I know that you can't read this right now as PowWow won't be
running, but hopefully you will have read it once and will remember it)

PowWow assumes that each directory below the main PowWow directory
corresponds to a service. And PowWow is licensed for particular
services (CIS, CIX, CIXNEWS and LOCAL), thus it sees services for which
it is not licensed and therefore refuses to run.

There are two possible fixes to this problem:

The first is not to have any subdirectories below the main PowWow
directory, except for any directories that PowWow creates itself.

The second is that PowWow will ignore all directories whose first
character is a % (percentage sign), so if you must have directories
under the main PowWow one, begin then with %.

Thus c:\PowWow2\fred\ is an invalid directory and will cause problems,
but c:\PowWow2\%fred\ is a valid directory and will NOT cause problems.

TITLE: PowWow only ever dials my first comms setting
After several comms settings have been defined, PowWow always seem to
use just the first one, and doesn't let me choose which one I want to
use at connect time. Why is this? And how can I use the others?

Actually this is deliberate behaviour, and it isn't a bug.

There are 3 ways do doing a connect, there is the icon (on the toolbox/
toolbar), the keyboard shortcut and the menus.

The icon and the keyboard shortcut automatically use the first defined
setting (what we see as the preferred setting) the menus allow you to
choose which comms setting to use.

Well, it didn't hang. It was STILL doing some processing, I know when
you pressed Ctrl+Alt+Delete Windows said that the application had
stopped responding to the system, but it hadn't acutely crashed. PowWow
was still processing and would have completed it eventually.

TITLE: No Involvement Colours Shown
PowWow doesn't highlight threads on CIX or CIXNEWS that should be
flagged as involvement threads (i.e. those that I have made a comment in)
but it does with CIS and other services.

ashmount/questions #10, from ashmount, 877 chars, Wed, 13 Apr 94 17:04

There are three answers to this:

First if it's sporadic, then sometimes PowWow loses the flag that says
that this is an involvement thread, if so a build of the specific topic
(or section) should cause the colours to reappear.

Second, if the above doesn't work it could be that you have a recent set
under Admin, User Options, this causes PowWow to be faster by ignoring
earlier messages, if the root message of the thread cannot be seen
then PowWow doesn't realise that this is an involvement thread.
increasing the recent value (or setting it to 0 should make involvement
colours appear.

Third, if you don't get involvement colours for CIX or CIXNEWS it's
because your User ID (under Admin, Comms Settings) should be typed in
lower case, and it partially or totally in upper case. Change it to
lower case and the involvement colours should appear.

TITLE: What are all the capitals and stuff?
I can see that in some messages words are typed in CAPITALS and that
there are strange symbols such as :-) typed in or similar stuff what
does all this mean?

Well typing stuff in capitals is seen as SHOUTING AT SOMEONE, or used
for emphasis. It stands out, quite a lot, it's a way of conveying more
information in the message. There are other ways to emphasise words
such as surrounding them by * or + or _ signs.

And what is a :-) well this is a smiley, turn your head 90degrees to
the left and look at it, it's sort of eyes, nose and a smiling mouth.
It's used to convey happiness or jocularity within the message.

The smiley is an "emoticon" and is a way of packaging emotions or
feeling into messages, and often can help to make the message more
understandable. There are many such "emoticons", but the most common
two are the smiley and the unhappiness one :-( which is used to convey
displeasure or unhappiness.

There are lots of other ways of doing these sorts of things, on
CompuServe emotions are typically written between < > signs so you get a
<grin> or <GRIN> (like a <grin> but bigger) or often shortened to <g> or
<G>

You must have resigned from the <TOPICNAME> locally, but not from it on
the service. To have it reappear you should do the following

Right click on the PowWow screen (or from the menus Forum, Go or
Conference, Join Local) and then click on the register button.
<TOPICNAME> should be in there, double click on it and bob's your uncle.

What has happened is that either a specific forum or CIS it's self has
lost your settings. PowWow sets CIS in a way that it recognises, but
sometimes CIS forgets the settings.

What you should do is from the Actions menu run Set CIS Options, this
sets up the default CIS settings to be correct.

After that you should try to rejoin the problem forum in question using
Forum, Join Service Forum (supply <FORUMNAME> and then your name for that
forum). This will setup that forum to respond correctly to PowWow.

This is almost certainly because the forum you are attempting to join is
a menu structure that has the real forum that you want to get at inside
it. Microsoft is a bit like this trying to join any of the developers
areas.

You get in by joining on-line, go for a manual connect and then type in
GO <FORUMNAME>, this will put you at a menu, once there follow the menus
through to get to the forum on the inside, the genuine name of that
forum (as opposed to the outer menu structure) will at some point be
displayed. Take a note of it, and then quit from CIS (typing bye).

Now attempt to join the forum using the name of the forum as discovered
above, you should get into it now..

A: Use Ctrl+Z, or Edit, Undo.

PowWow jumps back to the last message you visited, in order, for up to
the last 10 messages. This is not restricted to the current topic, but
will go back across topics and conferences (and services).

Binmail is BINary MAIL, it is the method by which you send and receive
files on CIS.

When someone sends you a file on CIS PowWow automatically downloads it
next time you blink into the download directory, and calls it BINn where
n is a number starting from 0 and increasing to make sure that PowWow
doesn't overwrite an existing file. i.e. If BIN0 exists then the file
PowWow downloads is called BIN1, if BIN1 exists then PowWow calls the
file BIN2 etc. We have to use this method because there is no automatic
way of determining the file name from CIS.

ps1 : Most files sent on CIS are already compressed - typically with
PKZIP so renaming the BINn file to BINn.ZIP and then unzipping it should
get you going.

ps2 : To send a file to someone else on CIS you just select from the
menus Mail, Send File, and the follow the on screen prompts - dead easy.)

The most important parameters to set your modem up for communications
to CIS are as follows (The modem init. string is found on the
communications settings dialog)

The Modem init. string should use Hardware Flow Control (also called
RTS/CTS) NOT XON/XOFF

The Modem init. string should set Error Correction to ON

The Modem init. string should set Data Compression to OFF

You should generally be attempting to connect to CIS using 8 bits and
No parity (found on the communications settings dialog).

No matter what precautions are taken, sometimes a blink will fail for
the strangest of reasons - perhaps from line noise, or that telephone
cables are wet, or the modems get out of sync or a power surge/spike
causes a modem to drop the line.

What matters is recovering from this dropped communication problem. In
the PowWow directory there should be a file called reply.org if you
rename this file to CIS.BSC then you should be able to blink again.
However this will mean that some actions are repeated - you will more
than likely double post. Now if you have enabled logging (done under
the communications settings dialog) you can trace through this file and
see which actions have been accomplished and which ones have not, and
delete the accomplished actions from review.

(ps Topic=Section, Forum=Conference)

This is just a naming thing, because PowWow is a multi-service produce
we tend to use the names apropriate for the service. So a Topic is the
same as a Section and a Forum is the same as a Conference. (See
ashmount/general #27 for more about this)

Well, the Ashmount family of Windows products goes like this

WigWam Single User, Single Service (ie CIX or CIS)

WigWam-Multi Single User, Multiple Services (ie CIX and CIS)

PowWow Multi User Multiple Services (CIX and CIS and LOCAL
                conferenceing and email as well

They all have VERY similar interfaces, and if you know how to use one of
them then you know how to use all of them.
