Congratulations
Well after being frightened off by all the woe in this conference and
the dire warnings in the manual etc. I have done the upgrade. Totally
painless, except where I ignored the dire warnings:-)

However, your otherwise excellent manual is somewhat coy about CIXNEWS.
My question is simple - How do I start? Is there a way of getting a list
of "conferences"? How do I tell WW what I want to download?

Thanks for the upgrade, and for the help - in advance.

>manual is somewhat coy about CIXNEWS
Coy? Clueless would be more like it. (but honest).
There's a file called CIXNEWS.ZIP in the files flist, which will get you
started.

Glad to find it went OK

if you download cix_news.zip from /files you should be able to get
cixnews going by following the included instructions, and yes you can
get a list of it's conferences

Turning off modem speaker.
I am using a Hayes V-series Ultra Smartmodem 9600 and am struggling to
change the init string in WW to turn the modem speaker off. I know ATM0
is the usual Hayes command but I cant get it to work in the init string.
Any offers ?

I found that cixnews more-or-less just worked. It took a bit of
fiddling around to be able to see the list of newsgroups available,
though. In the end, I double-clicked on the cixnews service (from the
join local conference toolbox icon), to make sure I was "in" cixnews
locally, then selected "View Service Conferences" from the Conference
menu (on the menu bar).

Auto Connect
Is there a difference between the Red Button on the Toolbar, Auto
Connect versus menu Actions Connect Full Download?

I have set a procedure that logs other programs out and logs onto CIS at
a certain time, it has to use the keyboard only though, so the button is
out.

When I log on via the menus, although messages are downloaded normally,
the downloaded archived file (scratchpad.arc) is not uncompressed, ie no
new messages.

Am I missing something in my setup?

There are 3 ways do doing a connect, there is the icon (on the toolbox/
toolbar), the keyboard shortcut and the menus.

The icon and the keyboard shortcut automatically use the first defined
setting (what we see as the prefered setting) the menus allow you to
choose which comms setting to use.

Internet
Can WW be used to manage Internet access thru CIX? If so, is it
documented how to do this (after decorating my study I've not got to the
bottom of the box with the WW manuals in :-)?

Would it be better to access the Internet using another node (Demon,
BBC,...) and more specific s/w?

>>>wigwam2/feedback 1761 nick_d(686)30apr94 21:18 c1757
It depends on what internet "services" you want. WigWam2 certainly
supports UseNet (both reading and posting) via CIX' gateway. (My
WigWam 2 came with a "cixnews" service already set up in it - there's a
little more information in the thread starting at #1701 in this topic).

I think it's also possible to ftp stuff from WW2, but I've not tried
this.

For live brwosing around, irc, gopher etc, you can use the CIX "go
internet" command, which gets you a prompt which can confuse a little
unless you have some idea what you want to do.

The advantage of using another service such Demon's t-a-m is that you
pay only the telephone costs, not online time, when in "live".

CIX has a limit of 64 k on it's messages. Theres not much you can do
about it.

take a look at the file cixint.cnf and look for the line that begine in
i on this line will be the number 65535, this is the maximum messagew
size in bytes, change this to whatever you want.

BUT BE VERY CAREFUL EDITING THIS FILE AS IT IS A CRITICAL FILE.

It's a limit imposed by the Window edit control. We are looking at ways
to get round this.

I recognise the feeling of bewilderment when faced with the Internet,
but , no, there's no easy guide to what to do with it. There are a few
books hat will give you a feel for it - notably Ed Krol's one (a bit
technodweeby, but fairly solid), but it's really just a network that
doesn't really exist!

The Internet is just an idea really - the idea that all those machines
out there can (= "are now able to") talk to each other, and different
organisations and individuals have reacted to this in different ways.
Some allow strangers to log into their machines, others allow files to
be copied to/from their machines, others allow people to play games on
their kit, and so on.

Wanting a guide to what can be done with the Internet is rather like
being in the late fifteenth century and wanting a guide to what can be
done with the combination of cheap paper, movable type and good
engraving techniques that came together then ;-).

Copied from Taz's message in /information:-

Scripts for CIX Help Files
Here are two new scripts to get information about cix helpfiles. The
first script gets a list of all the helpfiles available, the second
script gets a specific helpfile.

List of CIX HelpFiles
======================
This script will download a list of all the available cix helpfiles as
helpfiles.cix into the download directory. See below for script
installation details

Script:
u'Get Help File List'helplist !file echo List of CIX Help Files\n!file
time\n!run listhelpfiles\n!#download scratchp helpfiles.cix\n

Script Running Details:
from the menus select Actions, Script, and then select from the dialog
"Get Help File List".

Specific CIX Helpfile
======================
This script will download a specific cix helpfile (such as mailspeed) to
the user supplied filename. See below for script installation details

Script:
u'Get A Help File'helpfile !file time\n!file help %S'Help Topic:
'\n!#download scratchp %S'Local Filename: '\n

Script Running Details:
from the menus select Actions, Script, and then select from the dialog
"Get A Help File" Then supply the name of the help file you want (taken
from the list of helpfiles above) and then supply a filename to download
the file to.

Script Installation Details:
1) Put the script into a file called special.cnf, (in the \cix\ sub-
    directory) near the bottom
2) The script should be on one line only, it was broken by the
    message editor at space characters.
3) You need to restart WigWam for it to re-read the script file to
    recognise the new command.

>

That reads as if there should already be a file called special.cnf,
but there isn't. Should I create one with only the one line in it?

For the second script do I need to create/name a separate file name for
each help file topic? Why not use the original name of the helpfile and
d/l into my %down dir? If not, what should these files be called?

 John

>>>wigwam2/feedback 1812 taz(134)6may94 16:37 c1811
if the file doewsn't exist then create it.

some of the help files have long names, just name than what you want.

Newsnet
I have downloaded the WigWam2 demonstrator. I find it generally very
smooth and will be upgrading from TP 1.41.
But, how do I access Newsnet to re-join the Usenet newsgoups that I
was reading ?
I have found D:\WWCIX2\CIXNEWS\CIXNEWS.CNF but I cannot find any menu
combination that will let me access these particular script commands.
If I login to the service "CIXNEWS" the system blinks me into Newsnet
OK. But it dont know what to do then 'cos I dont know how to tell it. I
have searched the document CIX2.WRI for Newsnet, it appears in TP.INI in
[service.cix] as "usenet= ;Usenet/Newsnet/Cixnews".
my TP.INI does not have that line so I edited it in. Still no
Newsnet. Perhaps I need the "proper" version.

                          HELP!!!

                                    Jim C. :-)

Later.
Having carefully posted this to wigwam2\cis in error I withdrew
it. I saved the message (66) as a note in WW2. I then tried to import
that note into this message. The Subject box filled with garbage and
when I tried to "OK" the message Windows 3.1 said "ASHMOUNT caused a
General Protection Fault in Module WWNET.EXE @ 0002:A396"

                            YUK !
