Can't get going
I joined CIS yesterday using a brochure with complimentary credits.

I'm having great difficulty getting anything to download - messages
included. The first problem was the characters went AWOL after a CIS
prompt like ' forum! '. That isn't happening today.

Today I can get one message from a forum and the PC seems to hang at the
'messages transferred/transfer rate window'. When I cancel I get one
message loaded up plus the menu that appeared on CIS after the message.

The forum I'm trying to join is ORACLE. I can review the sections in
'Sections to Collect ...'

I'm using WW4CIS 2.0f.

PC
----------
AST 4/33 (486) 8Mb RAM , Windows 3.1. No TSRs like Dr Solomn's

PC serial = 9600 8/None (drop from higher rates in case the PC was the
problem)

Modem
----------
TRICOM Tornado 14/42 (will be 28/42 as ordered in a couple of days)

Init=ATE1Q0V1X4&C1&D2S0=0\r
Modem DTE=8/None
Modem DCE=8/None

CIS
---------
Character Set = ANSI/LATIN-1 (Changed from ASCII)
PARITY = None

CIS has had PERM DISPLAY, TERMINAL TYPE/PARAMTERS, (in fact it looks like
all the PERMANENT SETTINGS), set up by WW2.

Can anyone help, I've tried everything I can think of and I'm completely
stuck, frustrated, bloated with coffee :-(

Hi, right first things first,
Have you run set cis options from the actions menu? Can you try
re-running it. This has to be done at the speed you intend to use
WigWam at, the cis settings are independant for each speed. Also
sometimes CIS resets your settings.

Second try rejoining the forum, sometimes they forget the settings

Third, make sure that you are attempting to connect using 8 bits and no
parity (admin, comms settings)

Surely that should be 7 bits and Even parity?

No, Taz is right.
David Craig

No. CIS is now an 8 bit system.

Thanks for the advice I'll try it this morning.

I've mamaged to get messages to and from the PRACTICE forum. For some
reason I still only get 1 message at a time from ORACLE. Is there any
way of finding out if there's a moderator / sysop etc who I may need to
contact for use.

I noticed that when I joined I received the message:

' As part of processing your member registration, we are creating and
mailing you a new password to be effective 10 days from today.... ...
Until you receive this 2nd password and it is effective, certain
restrictions will apply to your account. '

Could this be part of the restriction (ORACLE is a '+' forum) ?

Where is the proper place to ask these kinds of questions, and questions
about use of ww4cis on compuserve ?

Not so bloated now, thanks :-)

Alastair

I'm away at the weekend. I went online manually and was able to read
messages from ORACLE. I resigned and rejoined ORACLE. I had a
'successful' pass that did 'Forum! read waiting' and 'Forum!read
messages' both of which returned nothing :-(

The highest read message was set to the high message counter. I'll see if
it has settled down and I if get anything on Monday.

alastair, the place for this is either here, or preferably
ukcomm/section 12

What you meant to say was "CIS is an 8 bit system - apart from when it
isn't"

Somebody who isn't impressed with CIS 8 bit "support".

We live in UKCOMMS, section 12 (& 14 for registered users).

Help !

>included. The first problem was the characters went AWOL after a CIS
>prompt like ' forum! '. That isn't happening today.

I can't get this to stop happening - I have tried all sorts of 7bit / 8
bits comms combinations and "Set CIS options" three times (successfully)
but I am unable to get into newspix or atitech.

Do I have to resign manually (how ?) and then rejoin with CIS or is
there some magic I don't know about ?

first thing is are you getting the "% checking membership information"
at logon? If so you'll need an updated comms module.

if not, then you need to run set cis options from the actions menu, and
then join the forum in question. CIS sometimes loses the settings.
Strange but true.

With some forums, there are menus/questionnaires to complete. These have
to be done on-line.
It is possible that these forums are still using some old software, and
WW (set up for the new stuff) can't cope.

Can you get in manually (perhaps using WINCIM)? If so, you might need to
mail the sysop to find out what kind of setup he's running.

I did have a manual logon to access the conferance. So I may have set it
up without realising it. It's not happening any more -- Yo!!.

I'm now getting messages downloaded. :-)

I've also forced my modem to 14.4, 9600, 4800 and 2400 and carried out a
'Set CIS Options' at all of those speeds.

I hope you manage to get in !

Library Listing
I tried to download the library listing for ZNT:EXEC section 8 (Chicago).
WigWam downloaded it, but it did not appear when I choose the View Library
List command. The actual file appears in D:\WWMULTI\CIS\ZNT_EXEC as S8.FLI.

from a comment made by pete

"It's a bug and it will be fixed PDQ. I think if you create
a file called '\WIGWAM2\CIS\ZNT.FLI' it will show a lot of the library
lists that you want."
