I am currently using a Dataflex Gem 2400 modem in a Dan 486sx/25. I am
thinking of upgrading to a V32.bis modem. My PC has a 8250 UART chip
which would probably need upgrading to allow faster speeds (e.g. 14,400
baud). What I want to know is, if I get an internal modem (which I
would prefer due to price and taking up no extra desk room, eg Pace
Microlin fx32), will this get around this problem, or does it depend on
the internal modem itself?

Getting an internal modem will certainly solve your problem as the
internal modem
will contain the 16550 on the board. I've been using a Pace Fx32+
(external) at work
and have concluded that its an excellent modem and would have no qualms
recomending
it to anybody.

Dear David,

You may be last person who can help me:
I have a fax/modem card installed in my SANYO 18NB notebook. It works
perfectly as a modem (as you can see), I have no problem with
downloading or uploading files but the card refuses to co-operate with
WinFax Lite. It pretends to start but when it gets to "Initialising
Speaker" it stops and says "Event Error". I suspect there might be a
conflict between my mouse and modem. The mouse is installed on COM1 and
the modem on COM2. When I install WinFax Lite on either COM, it simply
does not work... Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Jan (:-}>

I have a feeling that Winfax lite only supports certain standard modem
types and that the Sanyo notebook modem is something different. I'd
contact Delrina tech support.

Aha! A kindred spirit. I suffer from exacty the same problem.
The other fax package that came with the fax-modem ( its non-Windows
and I can't recall its name) does work, perhaps you tried it ? .

( Its gross compared with WinFax)

I'll be interested to see if David gets further with Delrina than I.

Dear Peter,
thanks for your reply. Yes, I have tried the fax/modem program which
was included with the card - it is working but the only problem is that
I need to fax from Windows as I have to use Czech characters with all
those funny accents (you see, I have come to Britain from
Czechoslovakia...). I am afraid that David might be right as I have
already contacted DELRINA and I was told that the fax/modem card might
not be compatible with WinFax Lite.
In any case I appreciate your effort.

Yours

When using WinCIM's autopilot whatsit to automatically retrieve forum
messages
and the like it often fails with the message (returned in the mail
message)

 > WinCIM
 > ERROR: Failed to get section counts for CIS:PCPFOR

This has only happened for the PCPLUS forum and aborts the whole
download - no ne of the other forums in my list get visited.

Who's problem is this? Is there a fix/workaround? Thanks,

As phil says it will solve yuor problems, and the Pace Microlinfx32 has
an excellent spec, but I have tried to get one (well actually 3 I've a
small computer business) and can't. As far as I am aware, and I've
spoken to Pace they have just changed their production to th modems
from sat. recievers and they have back orders in certain distributors I
use of about 1,500 and apparantly its the same everywhere. So you
either have to be very patient and wait until the back log is cleared
or get another Modem. If you can't wait Tecnomatic may sell you a
USRobotics internal 14,000 sportster Modem/fax for the same price as
the Pace, Its alittle bit more basic but its pretty good, I know 'cause
I'm using one now!
Hope this helps.

I have a similar problem with Winfax in that it does not recognise the
fax side of my laptops fax/modem. There is no conflict on the comms
port as windows terminal program will access the modem and the fax side
works with Bitfax for dos. A friend of mine has the same problem and
its a real pain. I wish Delrina would sought out the program so that
it can be used with internal laptop fax/modems

The disadvantage of an internal modem is that it uses an IRQ. If you
start adding sound cards, scanners etc these can get into short supply.

Jeff,

>>The disadvantage of an internal modem is that it uses an IRQ. If you

However, if you have to add another serial port to connect an external
modem, the same will apply, n'est-ce pas?

COM1 is my mouse, COM2 is my port for linking to my Amsrad NC100, COM3
is disabled and COM4 is my internal modem.

True. I've com1 as the mouse, Com2 as the internal modem, Com3 for the
Miracle Piano tutor, and no com4. (I've heard about windows not liking
missing com ports, so I went 1,2,and 3, isn't this a problem with your
system or are com2 and com4 DOS only), but I often think it would have
been easier to have bought an external modem and just switched leads at
the back.

I ended up building a switch for my COM ports, so that I can select
COM2 to be one of four devices without unplugging. It's a birdsnest of

involved in any of Kermit,Xmodem,Ymodem etc. so that I can simulate a
file download by hand. Can anyone out there help?

Jeff,

As I understand it, it's not so much missing ports that cause trouble -
at any rate I haven't had any problems; it's that COM1 and COM3 share
an IRQ, as do COM2 and COM4. Therefore one should not put two devices
that use the port constantly (such as a mouse and a modem) on the two
even- or 0dd-numbered ports.

The reason I didn't go mouse COM1, modem COM2, NC100 COM3 is that I
have lost the documentation for the card which provides COM2 and 3, so
I couldn't reconfigure it when I bought the modem - hence that became
COM4.

Now I can't use comms software (such as Cosworth) which only recognises
two ports...

I read Tony's article in the current edition of PCPLUS with interest as
I had just ordered the MT1932. I can support everything that was said
about it and the software in particular is excellent. (Having tried
unsuccessfully to use Winfax Lite).
I did encounter one initial problem which was a compatibility problem
with my IBM PS/1 Pro which resulted in the PC locking up every time the
modem was accessed. Having just joined Compuserve I borrowed a modem
and within 2 days had the problem solved by accessing Multitechs forum,
proving the value of Compuserve. The problem was that the modem had to
be told to ignore DTR. So if anyone out there is having the same
problem try AT&D0 disabling DTR.
