Steve,
I know you thought you were writing to Mary, but I've taken over and
neglected to change my handle for hers - or the other way around...
Thanks for your comments.
Watch this space...

S'ok. I'm looking at the 386sx for 199.00 as a replacement for my old
amstrad 2086. Let me know if you buy.

David,

I notice that one of my messages featured in the 'PC Answers On-Line'
section of this months magazine (p88 - lower half of middle column).

The question is - when do I get my commission? <g>

Seriously though, it's good to see the commitment to CIS - this forum
was one of the contrubutary factors in my joining CIS last month.

A question for those who think that Silicon is more than just the name
of a valley:

I have got a 486sx/33 PC with one of those blue Overdrive socket
thingies;

a) what can I plug in there?
b) what is the best thing for me to plug in there?
c) is it worth bothering, or should I look for a new motherboard (this
one has onboard SCSI-2/Local Bus ATI Wonder+/Windows Sound System v1 -
Interestingly, the WSS seems to add functionality to my SB Pro, so I
can sample at 16bit 44Khz stereo (!)).

Cheers,

Steve.

P.S. Thinking about it, perhaps it would have been a better idea to
post my message elswhere. Oops! <g>

Is it possible to put the cover disk information on one page ? I dont
realy want tto cut up my magazine but it is nice to be able to file
the disks seperatly with the relevant details and not to have to find
little scraps of paper .With the details scattered through the mag i
end up with a shredded magazine.

No commission, I'm afraid - the extracts are your fee for my time
looking after the forum <grin>.

Seriously, I did try emailing everyone before quoting them, when I
started this, but the logistics were too hard - by the time I know
what's going in, theres no time to reply. There is a warning that you
may be quoted in the top menus somewhere. Thanks very much for the
contribution.

Your socket is for a clock doubled DX chip - so you go from a 33MHz
486SX to a 66 MHz 486 DX2 - if I remember the numbers right. Your
motherboard stays at 33Mhz, but this is probably a worthwhile upgrade,
depend on how much a new machine costs, because a DX will handle some
software that a 486SX can't (CAD stuff, that needs a coprocessor, eg).

When you come to do it, however, you may find that the result is a bit
unabalanced, because peripherals will have improved too.

Er... it would be tricky to put six pages of information (12 pages with
the CD-ROM edition) onto one page, without cover-mounting a magnifying
glass.

Seriously, I suspect you mean the contents only. How about an
electronic equivalent - a database of the contents of each disk, which
you could import each month to create a comprehensive list?

It seems quite a common problem. My Trident card does exactly
the same thing if I use the SVGA driver that comes with Windows (I'm
using Windows for Workgroups 3.11).

My advice would be to try and find a specific driver for your
video card. I found the Trident one on the Microsoft Software Library
(GO MSL), or you could try the IBM File Finder (GO IBMFF) to see if
there's one in another forum somewhere.

If all else fails, try using the plain VGA driver.

Kevin.
