The autodetect for my Quantum 540AT drive is as follows

Cylinders 1120 heads 16 WP Com 65535 Landing Zone 1120 Sectors 59.
Giving a disk size of 516 Mb. I think these may be the same drives. If
you get yous going can you let me know how you are getting on with 32
bit file and disk access in windows as mine dosn't seem to want to
know.

but will experiment with some of your figures.

Pat,

Like you, I am new to Comms (and to compuserve) and I too asked about
comms packages before starting. Expert friend recommended that I used a
dos program called Panther by Black Cat Software. I have been told that
this package lacks for nothing and is better than some commercial
progs. As far as I can tell, this is absolutely true and comes complete
with manual of over 130 pages. Contact Almac BBS (UK) 0324 665371 for
free copy.

I use WinFAX Pro, v3.0, which I find to be an excellent program.
Delrina also produces WinCOMM Pro.

I have no experience of the latter program, but would not hesitate to
buy it, based on my use of WinFAX Pro.

These programs are available as a package (at least in the US), and I
believe that both programs can be loaded at the same time. I could not
now, for example start WinFAX as my COM2 port is connected to WinCIM.

Hope that you find this helpful,

Basically, use ZMODEM, as it can recover from interrupted transfers. If
you're sure that the line is error free (ie hardware error correction)
there is a theoretical advantage in streaming y-modem (y-modem G?), as
it only checks for failed transmission at end of transfer (zmodem
checks after every block). COMPUSERVE B is good for CIS. X-modem is
sometimes all thats available. Kermit is slow - except that it
sometimes works where nowt else will. I always use ZMODEM (or CIS-B).

Guy,

Many thanks for the tip.
I have recently bought my first modem and it came with Winfax Lite.
I found it very basic, with no manual and not at all intuitive.
It was obvious I would have to look for something better but would
avoid Delrina if Lite was an example.
Looking at the Delrina Forum, there are many positive comments about
WinfaxPRO 3 and much said about 4 which is just out as an upgrade.
Interestingly, within the Forum - Delrina disown Lite saying it is
entirely the responsibility of those OEM 's bundling it with modems !
If useful to you - I also have Wincim and now - Navigator which I find
really excellent for saving line-time and organising me in my early
days of Compuserve.

Jason,

The 550C printer isn't the only one with this problem. My
creaky old 500 used to have the same problem. I fixed it by
re-loading the printer driver from my original Windows 3.1 disks. I
had "upgraded" to the latest HP driver too. I'm not sure that there's
a driver for the 550C with 3.1 though.

Thanks for your reply. Windows 3.1 does not have a 550C driver.
Microsoft support desk (wow someone got through) told me that the
generic HP 500 driver they supply will run a 550C, though it cannot
handle colour. As my copy of windows 3.1 was old they sent me (free - I
was amazed), a copy of the latest version of the driver. It did not
make much difference. The max right margin setting was a little smaller
but still not equal to the right. I have tried HP again but can not get
a satisfactory answer from them. I wonder if their new 520 and 560C
printers have the same problem. If you would like a copy of the MS
driver let me know.

Read some of this thread and understand you have the HP Deskjet 500
Series V4.0 Print Drivers which replace those on the Win 3.1 disks. If
not, please email me and I will send you a copy in the post (I take it
you live in UK and HP won't mind because you are a user of their
equipment.) Otherwise, pleased reiterate the problem and if possible I
will find out if it occurs on the 520 and take it up with my supplier.

Hi,

I have currently been trying to extract database information out of a
system called LEX Elite produced by a company called ACE Microsystems
in London. To say it has been a nightmare is an understatement. The
information was required to be imported into Foxpro. I eventually
succeeded in extracting it but my main question is whether you have
ever come across this software package and whether there has ever been
a review of this package within your magazine. I would be very
interested to hear from anybody who has used the system and their views
on it. Maybe I'm missing soemthing within the system as I only require
to utilises it whenever someone in our company requiures to ditch it
and I have the thankless task of getting the information out of it.
Maybe through this forum there are people who can use it and can advise
me on the simplest process of extracting data.

Regards

It's not clear _exactly_ what you need so I'll assume that you need to
know whether shift and/or control are being pressed when your batch
file is run.
Dos is pretty unhelpful with this sort of thing and you can't even read
keypresses within a batch file let alone do more exotic things like
read the shift/control/function keys etc. Not without a separate
program anyway.
The following debug script might be some help

As it says in the description, it is a ZIP file - a compressed file.
You need PKUNZIP to uncompress it - in our utilities lib ISTR, part of
PK204G.EXE I expect (I haven't checked). ZIP format is fairly common
hereabouts.

I am going to upgrade from a 286 in the very near future.
I am not sure which is the best - a top of the range 386 or an entry
level 486. What I want to use on the machine will be windows,
Wordperfect for Windows, Pagemaker, a simple database and a great
little programme that I have seen little reviewed called Art & Leteers
Apprentice. Its a great graphic and text manipulator programme at very
reasonable cost - worth a look.
What is the difference between the different SX, DX, etc chips. Does a
486DX25 run slower or faster than a 386dx33? I am confused on chip
speeds.
I do not intend using spreadsheets etc at some stage I will also add a
CD but basically it will be used for wordprocessing and DTP.

Grateful for any advice

John,

Chips:

386 SX - internally a 32-bit 386, but communicates with the outside
world via a 16-bit bus to enable motherboards to use cheaper 16-bit
components. This is a cut-down 386DX.

386DX - the original 386, a 32-bit processor. Available at higher clock
speeds than the 386SX.

486SX - a 32-bit processor, clock speeds similar to the 386 ranges but
faster in operation because its internal microcode is more efficient.
Originally cut down from the 386DX by disabling the maths coprocessor
(qv).

486DX - a 32-bit processor with integrated maths co-processor. This
comes at faster clock speeds than the 486SX, and the coprocessor makes
floating point arithmetic very fsat for software that recognises is
(mostly powerful maths, spreadsheet and CAD applications).

Clock-doubled (and -tripled) 486s are available which work at twice (or
three times) the clock speed internally, giving higher operating speeds
for processor-intensive operations.

Recommendations:

Get a large, fast hard disc - 150 to 250Mb, more if you use a lot of
graphics or bitmap fonts. Get at least 4Mb RAM, maybe even 8Mb (or even
16 if you do large graphics). Get a fast graphics card, and maybe a
"local bus" machine.

These will do more to make Windows and Windows applications run fast
than any raw processor speed.

Then, get the fastest processor you can still afford, bearing in mind
that a 486 is faster than a 386 regardless of clock speed. (Bear in
mind that, for your applications, the processor will spend most of its
time waiting, either for you, for the hard disc or for the video card.)
than a fast processor.

I too do mainly WP and DTP on a 20Mhz 386DX (old!) with 4Mb RAM and a
S-L-O-W 65Mb hard disc. It's the disc that keeps me waiting. I once
accidently set the processor to 4MHz (sic), and didn't even notice for
weeks.

Hope that helps,

Regards, RichardF Telford, Shropshire, England

The figures you want are as follows, (assuming you are refering to the
Prodrive LPS 52AT) 2 heads, 1219 cylinders and variable sectors per
track.
I have found that as long as you get close enough to the physical size
I.E. 49 megs or so. Then the IDE controller will map it out for you.
You can find this and other info on all sorts of hard drives in an
extremly good book called The Hard Disk Technical Guide . Published by
Micro House. The Isbn No is 1-880252-25-2
 Hope all this helps

It sounds like you may not have the "BASE" memory required to run your

Blimey - that's a bit rich... you buy somebody elses magazine, and then
ask us for help using their disc!

Seriously, our review of SimCity wasn't written in-house, so I don't
think we can help specifically, except to suggest that you check
CONFIG.SYS; make sure that all your extra memory isn't being set up as
EMS. A line like DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM is a dead give-away...

The first CD-ROM edition of PC Plus (June 1994) will be available on or

Another factor you may want to bear in mind is that any 386 is a dead
end - to upgrade next time you need a new motherboard.

With even the cheapest 486SX, you should be able to upgrade later to a
486DX, DX2, DX4 and even Pentium OverDrive, when it arrives, by just
plugging in the new chip...

Sounds like a copout, but I wouldn't dare touch this one! Seriously,
Stacker tech support is safest, especially as I use Stacker 4 now and
might get the two confused. I don't think that it's a problem, but I
found the Stac 3 drive letter translater confusing sometimes. Stac is
on 0344 303020.

John,

Further to your query:

I have not checked out the Stacker 3.0 manual but the 3.1 & 4 have a
section on adding a Hard Disk.

What you see as a problem -- that the BIOS needs to see drive C and
drive D only is not, I think, I real problem it you look at how Stacker
works.

You will only have two physical hard disk drives when you add one: C &
D. When your computer is booting up this is all that the BIOS will see.
So you can make the appropriate entry in the BIOS table. It is only
when Stacker is loaded that the files STACVOL.??? are recognized as
virtual drives and labelled C, with D being the uncompressed portion on
physical drive C. This is done with the SWAP function.

One advantage of upgrading to MSDOS 6.2 and STACKER 3.1 or 4 is that
the SWAPPING is not needed so life is much less complicated.

The only thing I cannot tell you for certain is whether your new
physical drive D will become E & F. I think this is what happens so you
do not even have to mess around with any references you have to files
on the uncompressed portion of physical drive C.

I should know since I have added a hard disk and even replaced on with
another larger one. STACKER is awfully clever -- but do read the manual
or ask on STACKER.

Hope this helps and doesn't conflict with what someone else has said in
the interim. Do back up first tho' <g>

 Hugh

I recently read an advert in the May issue for Intuit's QuickTAX and
also a review in Brief Encounters of PC Tax Advisor. I'm self empoyed
and the idea of an "expert system" that can guide you through filling
in your tax return and save you 500 pnds odd in accountants fees is
almost too good to be true.

I've also just ordered the very popular Quicken for Windows for use as
my accounting package and QuickTAX claims to be able to read in the
numbers directly thereby automating the whole process!

It would be very interesting to see a review, perhaps even with an
accountant involved to comment on the package(s) and the advice given.

Just a thought!

Mark

forget to disconnect using CIM but if you use an OLR and choose your

fine but windows kept giving me a memory parity error, system halted

lock up for the same reason. My screen has also acted strangely but I
think it is due to my fiddling about.

Any ideas to correct this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Re Discussions a couple of months ago re OS2 and awards

'Cos they had a special offer at the Windows show (35 + VAT) I
brought OS2 for Windows (perverse sod buying OS2 at the Windows show!)
- I had been tempted for quite a while.

If they don't get an award for the OpSys they should certainly get one
for support ! For the first two months its free as well! I've called at
1.00 am and got good FRIENDLY support. Apart from some minor problems
with a soundboard driven CD drive (SCSI support is much better) I've
found the product excellent.

I was programming a C++ / DOS program, I had a bug which overwote
COMMAND.COM and knocked over the DOS session. In WINDOWS it would of
meant a reboot each time from OS2 you end that session start a new one
and try the test again !

Overall the support is the real winner - try that with MICROSOFT
when Win 4 hits the streets.
